Some Republicans are now willing to lift immunity for officers who use deadly force. Houston Police Officers' Union president Doug Griffith calls it a bad idea. “Qualified immunity means just that. You can qualify for immunity in certain cases. As far as completely removing qualified immunity, we have to protect our law enforcement officers from frivolous lawsuits,” he says. Some Democrats also want to punish officers who are fired, by stripping them of their pension.
