SoBo residents block attempt to open Wankhede for tourists ByVijay TagoreVijay Tagore / Updated: Dec 10, 2020, 06:00 IST Big crowds will lead to traffic chaos and could compromise citizens’ safety, residents argue. Less than three months after state Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray tweeted about his plan to open the Wankhede Stadium for tourists, residents of Churchgate and Marine Drive have written to Thackeray, BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and others, flagging up traffic and safety concerns. While the Mumbai Cricket Association’s apex council meeting is scheduled for December 15 when matter will be discussed, a threepage letter issued by the Marine Drive Residents’ Association said that the members were “dreading a security breach” if all and sundry were allowed inside the stadium. “We the residents are stakeholders of any change in our immediate environment. As such we wish our fears be allayed first before the Wankhede Stadium is thrown open to tourists and fans,” the letter said.
