Fruit growers can design their spray programs to reduce harm to a key natural enemy of the brown marmorated stink bug, according to a recent USDA study. Researchers found that the samurai wasp is vulnerable to a familiar insecticide, but the waspâs eggs are largely protected from sprays once deposited inside stink bug eggs. The study, published Nov. 26 in the journal Insects, is part of a larger effort to develop integrated pest management procedures to control the stink bug. âWe wanted to know how we could best fit in the samurai wasp and maximize its impact,â said Tracy Leskey, a co-author of the paper and director of USDAâs Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville, West Virginia.
