The “Pirola” Omicron variant (BA.2.86) has been found in 14 countries including the United States where it has been detected in five states. Its highly mutated spike protein has shown it has significant capacity to evade immunity from XBB.1.5 variant which is being used as a template for the next generation of COVID booster vaccines.
