San Francisco was in pretty rough shape in 1977. The city was in the midst of a crime wave for the ages, still reeling from the police killings of the Zebra murders and Patty Hearst’s kidnapping. Jim Jones was gathering his doomed flock on Geary Street and the Zodiac was still on the loose.
