Charges. After years of focus on efficiency automakers are focusing on speed and power. But first boko haram, a Nigerian Armed group attacked a military base of neighboring cameroon. It is located north cameroon near northeastern nigeria. Bring us uptodate with the casualties and tell us why this base in cameroon was a target. Well, so far what we know is that the security sources weve been talking to have confirmed one soldier dead and many, many boko haram fighters killed when they retaliated. It happened close to the Northern City when boko haram fighters invaded that area and open fired on security personnel there. Now what were hearing from that particular area is the area is now calm. This is not the first time that boko haram has been targeting military formations both. Last year they killed a lot of soldiers and the cameroonian soldiers followed them, and killed several boko haram fighters in the process. Now the targeting of military formations in the northeast in particular and parts of cameroon by the Security Forces or rather by boko haram by Security Forces because Security Forces have been applying a lot of pressure, trying to push them out from areas theyre holding and territoryies they are attacked and continue to attack. So the remeron Cameroon Forces are combining combining with the nigerian forces. How successful have they been . Well, there have been some level of cooperation between the two countries because they realize they face the same enemy. Initially cameroon was reluctant to cooperate but when they realized it was in the best interest of both countries cameroon gave nigeria support in the fight against boko haram. This is not to say that both countries are not taking individual steps to fight boko haram. Niger gentleman has taken a lot of action to push back boko haram. Boko haram is holding a lot of territory and pushing its area of oppression in cameroon. Cameroon will use its own military to push back boko haram from those territories. Thank you very much for that. Now france is mobilizing 10,000 soldiers after last weeks attacks on a satirical attack and a jewish supermarket. Theyll protect the general population. An additional 5,000 Police Officers will be deployed to guard jewish schools. An unprecedented ramping up of security. Rory challands is with us now. 10,000 soldiers on the street. 5,000 Police Deployed around jewish schools. France clearly feels itself to be still at risk . Yes, thats right. And there is a specific reason why the government is taking these measures. Basically because they are still worried that the attackers who struck in france last week may have had accomplices that have not been tracked down yet. Now if you remember Amedi Coulibaly, the attacker who attacked the kosher supermarket on friday there, was a video released in the aftermath of that which was him explaining why he did what he did. Now the person who filmed and edited that video is unknown and police and the government here are worried that that person might still be dangerous. So thats why they have deployed all these people onto the streets, all these troops and the police that are now going to be guarding synagogues and jewish schools as well. While the french people came out on sunday and expressed their support, their solidarity for unity, for freedom of expression, and for the unity of the french public, the government itself is concentrating very much at the moment on security. Rory, thank you very much for that. Rory challands in paris there. Well, editor of lemond up in live from paris. Good to have you with us, its a unprecedented number of soldiers and police. Is it just about security, or is it also about making people feel more confident as they go about their lives in france . I would say both. Of course there is a security problem. And the Jewish Community are birdie with the hostage incident and the killing of teachers and students in a jewish schools three years ago. This is for the security side, but politically to show as quickly as possible that the french governments response to terrorism will be massive and immediate. You have to remember that the present Prime Minister was before home minister, and was very very strong on security issues. But can this level of security be sustained . It must be costing a fortune. Of course, its costing a fortune, but money is not the main ingredients. Theyre already involved in the middle east, and other places and they were in afghanistan before and they cannot be stretched in the limits of their capacities. Im not sure that this could last for long because in the battlefield they would have to be replaced, and there is not an increase of soldiers in the army even if the number of policemen are going to be increased. France still feels its at risk for future attacks. Some media report that sleeper cells may have been activated in the country over the last 24 hours. Is that something thats been talked about openly . Well, what happened last week is certainly not one off and Security Experts believed that it can be repeated at a same scale, and perhaps a larger scale, and they want to be ready, they want to be more ready than the last attack where they were taken off guard. And they know that there are more than a thousand french nationals who have joined the Islamic State in syria, and that theyre back with a vengeance. The fact that 5,000 police are deployed around jewish schools, you mentioned the attacks some years ago is that because jewishthe Jewish Community in france feels particularly vulnerable right now, or is that a political reassurance to the president israel Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu was in france yesterday. Its not only for the security situation if they were all moving to israel. The answer of the french government but also leaders from the Jewish Community has been that theythey would always be a place for the Jewish Community in france, and that france without its Jewish Community wouldnt be france any more. France has hundreds of thousands of jews, millions of muslims in other areas and they are all part of the french nation. Patrice, thank you for joining us. Patrice de beer in paris. The suspected female accomplice of the gunmen has crossed into syria. Hayat boumeddiene is pleased to have left france and crossed into syria the day before her partner, Amedi Coulibaly took hostages at a kosher supermarket in paris. He and four hostages were killed in that incident. Had Turkey Closed its borders, it would have had to close it for the refugees as well. We kept the borders open not for the terrorists but for the kids who lost their parents for the women whose husbands were slain. Well, turkeys border with syria is notoriously poor. Bernard smith reports from the Turkish Border town. Turkeys Foreign Ministry say Hayat Boumeddiene entered turkey the second of january and she stayed in a hotel in istanbul for one night and checked out and then went to a town of orfa. She is known to have been in orfa because she used her mobile phone. Now its believed she stayed in orfa until january 8th. The Foreign Ministry is saying thats when she went across the border into syria and its of course january 8th when her husband, Amedi Coulibaly, killed those customers at the jewish supermarket in paris. The speed in response to isil is under further scrutiny. Meanwhile isil fighters have killed 24 members of the kurdish Security Forces in a surprise attack in northern iraq. Its the deadliest single attack against the kurds since last summer. The incident took place near gwer southwest of erbil. Peshmerga have confirmed they have lost dozens of their men in the town of gwer, 25 kilometers of erbil the capital of the kurdistan region. Hundreds of isil fighters attack gwer and they only managed to repulse them with reinforcement. They say that the town is now deserted most of the people fled faring to be caught in the cross fire, and they said they were continuing the clashes between isil and the peshmerga fighters around the town of gw er in a small village where the peshmerga had been in control but isil took over in recent fighting. Airstrikes led by the United States are still going on. We saw pictures it shows not only the capacity, but also how daring isil is becoming by the day. Afghanistan has finally turned a corner. A spokesman for president ga well, the announcement of the new cabinet ministers will come as welcome news to afghan who is are waiting to see what the new unity government would look like like. Ashashraf ghani has nominateed cabinet members. They include three women in the cab inspect. None of them have been ministers before. Thats something that ashraf ghani said that we would see new phrases. There is leadership experience including former head of the army as well as former head of the high peace council. These nominations still have to be confirmed by parliament. Parliament members say theyll be vetting these cabinet members very closely. This nomination comes as a new report has been released on the fund that pays for afghanistans policemen. This report coming from the special Inspector General of the United States, who looks at afghanistans funds. The report saying that there is a wide scope for corruption in the police fund. 300million a year given to afghanistan by the United States. After nine years that fund still does not have an electronic payroll system, and there are twice as many police i. D. S issueed than there are policemen, and there is potential for corruption in this fund. Those policemen could be being paid and Afghan Police chiefs could benefit from this because some of the funds are paid out in cash. The United NationsDevelopment Program which administer this is fund disputs the fact that 20 of Afghan Policemen are in jeopardy of not getting some or all of their paycheck. But the they admit there are problems with this fund that pace the Afghan Policemen. It is a contentious point with the afghan government. President ashraf ghani has asked the United Nations to get this plan on the afghan budget, that is to get afghan officials fully in charge of this money sometime next summer. This shows the challenges that Afghan Administration faces still the afghan president would like to see his government in charge of as much of this International Money as possible. There is still to come here on the al jazeera news hour. Cuba has released 53 Political Prisoners after its historical deal with the United States. Divers retrieve one of the data boxes from the airasia plane that crashed. In palestine they take on japan in the first asia cup games. Cube withcuba has released 53 prisoners. Human rights organizations say they were imprisoned for advocating political and social reforms in cuba. We have more from the u. S. State miami, tell us more about this prisoner release and how it under lies the new relations between cuba and the u. N. Reporter well, i think this has been seen as overcoming a major hurdle of normalization between the u. S. And cuba. What we dont know are the identities of these Political Prisoners. We know that theyve been named as people who were expressing internationally protected freedoms people who were calling for social and political change but as yet their identities and where they are now has not been revealed. To many this is considered cubas second city with over a million cubans in florida. We heard from senator marco rubio, someone who has been a staunch critic saying its good for the families. Theyll be reunited with their loved ones, but hes concerned with minimum minimal changes. Theyre calling for complete changes and they want free elections in cuba, and they wont be happy until that happens. But over all certainly many of the cuban americans ive met have talked in great deal about what is the u. S. Getting in exchange for this normalization of relations. I think this will go something towards that. But remember in the last few days weve seen that artists in cuba arrested in expressing their opinions on political change. One in particular was trying to hold an open mic session and was arrested but this comes on the eve of u. S. Cuba talks. Next wednesday a delegation will travel to havana to continue with those normalization talks and priority number one is opening an u. S. Office in havana after decades of a very cold relationship between these two countries. Thank you very much, indeed. Andy gallagher updating us from miami. Now interpol has put ukraines former president on the International Wanted list. Viktor yanukovych has been living in russia after his ousting of his rule. He has been accused of embezzlement and financial wrongdoing. Were live from the ukrainian capitol kiev. Tell us more about the charge against the former president. Reporter well, as you say it has to do with embezzlement and corruption, ill read the exact charge. Misappropriations, embezzlement or conversion of property, a word i have not heard malfesation. I had to look up, corruption of public office. Just a month ago in december. They refused to put yanukovych on the red list. The red lists asks for member countries to seek out and actively seek out and arrest people. That was refused back in december. So to have it granted just a month later would seem to suggest that the ukrainian prosecutors have either persuaded interpol that this is not a politically motivated case which interpol would not touch as a result of its constitution, or that there is more evidence, that theyve managed in the past month to produce sufficient evidence to persuade interpol this is a bona fide case. Yanukovych is in russia. Is it likely hell face extradition from there . I think its highly unlikely. Russia is one of the 190 countries which sign up to interpol or is a participant in interpol but given the fact that, for example russia, for its part, has requested the the the extradition of one of the leaders of the right sector in the ukraine for alleged crimes and ukraine has refused to cooperate, you can see that i think its highly unlikely that ukraines request for the the extradition of the former president living in russia, i dont think russia is going to cooperate with that in any speedy process. The other thing that i think to take particular notice of, charges relate to embezzlement. There is no mention at all of the murder or manslaughter of the protesters who died here in maidan in ukraine, in kiev, just 11 months ago. It would suggest that the authorities here are really no closer to finding out exactly what went on and who fired the fatal shots relating to that particular part of the up rising 11 months ago. Thanks for that. Paul brennan updating us there. Now search teams have found one of two flight recorders of the airasia flight that crashed two weeks ago. We have more from jakarta.
