That sort of components when the seasons change from autumn to winter this year worse than normal because it feels like to me mostly children but also adults as well I dropping like flies I think something like a 3rd of you know most schools have had absence from nearly all peoples at some point in the last couple of months unfortunately not every year everyone will say this you the winter bugs just come along because we're going from hot and cold we're going into different environments and we're congregating together in groups where we wouldn't ordinarily do that because of the time of year and that just promotes that one person's a little bit unwell it just gets spread I'm afraid and we've got flu vaccine out for people that need it yeah it's hard encourage you to get them but I'm afraid it just is the same every year is the same every year pretty much no we're not seeing an influx of anything more very reliant or taking out more people just feels like it just feels like it but we have a similar problem every winter and in fact if you look at the hospitals the winter crisis is actually being escalated throughout the year now but things are always worse in winter because people have a more severe illness around the winter time and they need a bit more help we've got lots of callers who would like to speak with you Dr Sandesh said Let's go straight to the lines now and speak with Joanna good morning Joanna I reply How you doing very well but a parent but perhaps you're not would you like to speak to Dr Sanders thank you Jacki Good morning I. Want to talk survive this summer's beginning of this fresh air through. The last time in flight and I wondered how come it's that both sides. Well good morning Joanna so. It's not your sore throat doesn't always go on both sides because you have different structures on both sides of your throat so explosive pull that one will be affected when the other won't be we do normally see both sides getting affected but you're not completely unusual I'm afraid the thing to say there I'd like you to do so sore throats one of those things very common everyone gets them 96 percent of viral antibiotics to very little to the vast majority of people but things that can help so so tough chips gargle some salt water but don't drink anything for 10 minutes let the salt do its work let it pull out all the badness and then the next thing I'd like you to do is after you've tapped that is warm water mean you can honey so that will just suit your throat and it tastes nice it's a lot cheaper than the stuff that you buy from the shops. And I just asked you where. I am 1st victory for and actually shot. First I think a lot really really I was just wondering. What sort of. Become more popular has their economic sort of habits as a preventative more than a cure or is it that how it sort of perceived Sandesh so. It doesn't there's no evidence that it's going to make a big amount of difference to you but if it just gives you that feeling that your throat a little bit nicer it's a bit more than absolutely I don't have a problem with people taking an easier. Just one drink I believe. There's churn in the stone so you only take about $2.00 to $1.00 for something and then you have time off so that you naturally insistent. I think you're raising a great point Ron I think there is this tussle may perhaps I'm wrong but there is a tussle a little bit between medical medically trained professionals and people who want to sort of try what's called alternative remedies I mean they are sort of meshing a little bit so you know you will get acupuncture now on the n.h.s. And things like that where it's probably 20 years ago that there was a complete no no so when you get people sort of saying Sandesh you know should Oh I think I believe this have all this remedy really really helps me where do you stand on that is it just in your sort of training you need to share issues. Like she has . A case and if so I would say some things I'm asked I have no idea and I need to go and look at Google like everyone else to see what's the active ingredient What does it do yeah but there are we know that a lot of medicines have actually come from her medicines have come from plants have come from natural sources that were found in just purified it so there is some truth in some of the things that people take but it's about knowing what those side effects are. Min most cases where people tell me that they're taking something complementary than as long as it's I feel it's not affecting their health I don't have a problem with them doing it Ken let's go to Glasgow now and speak with Susan good morning Susan you're through to the doctor. Good morning doctor morning. I have. Gone on for 23 months Rivera trigger some small sales and I'm just wondering if anything anyone can do for their terrorist treatment Turturro. Absolutely so I think the thing for people who are listening is what is a trigger finger so if you imagine the your fingers the tendons that run on the palm surface you think is they are just running on tracks and they run under tunnels and what happens is it should be a nice smooth running on the trigger you've got a swelling on the. Tracks you've got a train which then bumps into the tunnel and then you've got to force it through so there's lots of things that we can do for that the 1st thing to say is if it's a little bit painful than things like Ibuprofen will help you also if you find the real problems when you wake up in the morning then maybe a splint overnight would help but if none of that is helping then Sterrett injections will help about 70 percent as long as you don't have diabetes or rheumatoid but they can come back and the final option is surgery and that will take away your trigger Oh wow that's that's good to know I could just read a little pick a saved up absolutely it just comes to very elect and that was a great clik. I don't have any that will help Susan thank you ever so much I just discussed that with my own doctor now it seems that I could get some directions or something perfect thank you very much indeed for your call as always there's always lots of health stories in there in the press and ways to find ways to stop feeling tired all the time I think that's got to be one of the most common modern day complaints that you must hear isn't it people sound so tired all the time are all convinced that the something really terrible and sinister underlying it but is that we normally the case that there is something terrible underlying it or are we just getting the basics of life style wrong well I think about one in 10 patients I see me come in being tired all the time so it's a real problem that I see there are many many different reasons for it ranging from psychological to physical to psycho social reasons. Most people are healthy and it is about lifestyle changes and trying to make things a little bit better so let's talk about this time of year when you are stressed you've got to have the perfect day for Christmas Day you are out shopping all the time buying all presents and you go out and have a few drinks and basically what suffers it's of sleep when your mental health suffers and so you are going to be tired and then you over caffeinated to make up for in their day so what I would like people to do is if you are going to go and enjoy yourself that's fine but have some water after every 2nd drink a full glass of water and then if you do miss out on sleep on one night make sure you are in bed early the next night and usually you can't really catch up on sleep but just try to be rested so it's not going into your whole week and also you need to eat properly so eat healthily and try to exercise easier said than done in the cold short days yes but I would like people to try that and I think it's all that mental stress is physically exhausting if people feel stressed out especially this time of year overwhelmed stuff to do kids to look after perhaps elderly parents job stress that. Actually it's what's going on in your head is impacting on your body you're absolutely right and the other thing is it impacts upon your sleep because you see line beds and all you can think about all the things that you either have to do You haven't done or you want to do so what I would say is if you can't get to sleep because you've got thoughts running through your head don't just lie there get up sit down on a table write your thoughts down get back into bed and keep doing that and eventually your thoughts will stop and then you will get to sleep got a caller on the line he's picking up on your conversation around the honey that you were recommending to Joanna a bit earlier on morning George La langue you're in Fife and you've got a question for doctors and their yes. Doctor morning George I enjoy your honey. Yet all I'm on a corner is really expensive and I just wondered beneficial when I got 100. So the the evidence shows that when you can it does have some antibacterial properties in it now it's very weak evidence so don't don't think that is going to solve everything but we do know the wombs for example we do put honey impregnated into some of our bandages that we have so it does help is there a massive difference the evidence isn't quite clear on that but the only thing that has been researched has been new Kahaani which is why I would say that what actually is my new Kahaani So it's just the the b. It's kind of pay right and is more expensive than your regular Yes it really is flap on your toaster uses it and George do you take yourself. Johnny for many years and learn monitor comes from years old you know the passion right Ok and that's probably why it's more expensive it's come a long way very strange very strange do you think there's a taste difference squash like. But it's not correct and you take it for medicinal purposes or is it just you enjoy taking coffee out do you instead of sugar you know no I don't monotonic. Trade. Coffee. Shops like this much focus a little occupied Well well done George thank you very much indeed for your call this morning and we've got lots and lots of texts coming in here I one from Jerry saying I hear this all the time and actually I heard John Beattie saying it that when you get to a certain age you should get a prostate check Well I went to the doctors and he advised me that it's not a good idea as it could cause more problems than solve Can you please advice so prostate is one of those areas which we hear a lot about prostate cancer most people most men will die with prostate cancer rather than because of prostate cancer as you get older your prostate naturally gets bigger and you run into wanted to toileting issues and that's completely normal because the. The age of the of us right the issue really around testing is the majority of people don't have prostate cancer that is spreading and if we go investigate and the 1st thing you'll do the doctor will examine your back passage will feel your prostate Yeah and you'll get a blood test called a p.s.a. Now the p.s.a. Also normally goes up as well so the prostate specific antigen. If they come back positive than this quite a lot of tests an invasive test with their own side effects that you go through to maybe in the end be told there's nothing that we need to do is it worth you going through all of that or is it not that is a personal decision so if a patient comes to me and says I absolutely want to give them this advice and they still want to test absolutely I don't mind going ahead so there's no sort of regular Will soon as you hit 50 go to the doctor get get you know get a check up there's no sort of in the way there would be for women and mammograms around breast cancer worries unfortunately screening for prostate cancer just isn't going to work because of the amount of false positives so there are people who don't have it but come with positive results it's not like breast cancer where we can actually screen really well and find the breast cancer. One thing that some people have advocated is for men to check their own prostate. That's that's the 1st time I've heard that so that is certainly something that has been advocated My suggestion would be if you're very worried come and have a conversation with your g.p. There isn't an age it's all about symptoms so if you've got Bony pains or you feel that you're not going to the toilet properly come in and have a chat but presumably specially if you've got any kind of family history let's say you know your father and your uncle and brothers or something if you have there's a history of prostate cancer in the family a younger man wants to be far more vigilant about that p.s.a. Level or having that prostate checked because as with many cancers if you catch it early you know you can survive it and if you can if you catch in the later stages you're probably not going to it's going to hasten your demise so what about advice around people who are in a risk category you've got a family history so I wouldn't want people to panic prostate cancer is very slow growing cancer it affects a lot of people so let's not play it down most men are affected by it but if you're young the chances of you having prostate cancer are very very very small even with a family history even with a family history so I don't want people to go in panic right I certainly don't want people coming into G.P.'s when the 3020 wanting to get their prostate exam and it's more likely as you get older and that's why when you hear about 5060 that's when we start to think are you having symptoms maybe it is worth examining Let's do another text if we can squeeze one in we've got one here anonymous Texan who says I had a full 5 weeks ago I'm 69 years old Phin healthy simple trip ended up going to any got 4 stitches in my head black eye and bruising still got aches and pains in my wrist and shoulder where I fell but I'm worried now about a brain bleed in the future caused by a blow to head the blow to the head that I had so that initially thinking this is not no big deal and thinking actually I really whacked my head there and at my age should I be worried so for. This person I'm very sorry about your for the pain you had. It is possible that fall can cause a brain bleed you're absolutely right on that but it's going to be really early on so the 1st 24 hours are critical it can go from for about a week and some of the risks are really around if you're on blood thinners so if you're on Warfarin for example then the risk is bigger because you're just more likely to have a bleed. Ths signs to look out for the 1st thing says if you fall on his head please don't go out drinking you need to responsible adult who's going to be around with you right now if you fall hit your head and someone says. You look like you're drunk you're slurring your words you're not paying attention to what I'm saying that needs to be seen in hospital you need to get that person straight into hospital and get them reviewed because that is a sign that could be a bleed after about 7 days you're very unlikely this fall to create a bleed in the future all right he will thank you very much indeed to send us some very varied questions there from honey to self exam prostates and everything in between great to speak with you we will pass along couple of text that we've that we've had in into the program before you go but teleports seeing you the next time thank you very much indeed for joining us this morning thank you Whedon's day on the b.b.c.
