But it is 10 00 p. M. On the east coast, 7 00 p. M. In San Bernardino. This is cnn tonight and im don lemon. You are at a candle light individual ivigil. Is the Community Still on edge . There is a lot of sadness and security here. They are cautious about any large gathering. And there is a lot of anger but a lot of broken hearts. People are trying to figure out what happened, trying to see, are there other people who may have been involved in this. And the fact they dont know fully what the motive in this was is particularly troubling to people and i think a lot of people are eager to hear what it was to try to get their mind wrapped around what happened yesterday. If you can even do that. You read off the name of the victims there. And gary tuchman spoke to one of the widows of one of the victims. She was talking about her husband, who was killed and his feelings toward muslims and that he actually worked with one of the killers. She didnt know whether they had had any kind of conflict over religion but heres what she told gary. You have been open about this what he has said about muslim in the past. What has he said . Yes, he is very upset about what isis has been doing and the radicalized muslims, al qaeda, the whole situation. His upset about the fact that the majority of the muslims its like they wont come out and do something about it. Do you think he talked to farook about that . He might have. And do you have any knowledge at all from anyone you talked to of what happened at the function yesterday with farook . No. I just know that there was an argument and very easily could have been an argument with my husband. I wouldnt be surprised. We do not know at this point what that argument was about. Kyung has been on your show and she is at the same place you are. Lets bring her in and talk to her. Mike madden is a First Responder who spoke at a press conference. We were transfixed about what he was saying. What did you pick up from that press conference . Its really what he saw and his amount of bravery that he and the other officers displayed. He was one of the first officers to arrive. He and three other officers ran into the building. They were responding, believing that the suspects, these killers were still inside and then he described what can only be expressed as a horrific scene. It was unspeakable. The carnage that we were seeing, the number of people who were injured and unfortunately already dead. And the pure panic on the face of those individuals that were still in need and needing to be safe. We asked we got as many people out as quickly as we could. And he says that it was so loud when he was in there that he could see all the people who were wounded. He could hear the moaning and the crying. There were fire alarms going off, don. And he said that you could still smell gun pounder wder in the a we are getting more accounts, arent we . We are getting a picture of what is happening in the room from the people who were inside that place and just exited the room or had actually seen what happened inside. It was a christmas party. It was one of those work meetings that turns into a luncheon. There were about 75 to 80 people inside. This is department of public health. These are the people that go out and check swimming pools and check restaurants and the number of people we spoke with basically said what was happening inside that room was a festive time. Things were looking up and they were excited to celebrate the end of the year and it turned when the gunfire erupted. Syed farook, he didnt have a criminal background, did he . We couldnt find anything on his background. That is perplexing as well. Law enforcement, how are they supposed to find these suspects if there is no sign. Thats what they have to drill down here. What about his family . Are you learning about them . The only thing that we could see is there is any signal of violence in his background is how he grew up. We got ahold of Court Documents on what kind of family he came from. His mother divorced her husband in 2008 and she talks about a very abusive husband. He was someone who she described in the Court Documents as being mentally unstable and ill, someone who talked about suicide daily. She says that he would beat her. He threw a television on her and her children witnessed all of this. My goodness, thank you very much. Stand by. Pamela brown has breaking news about evidence recovered. Tell us what you have. Thats right. We learned that two cell phones were damaged an they were found in a garbage can at one of the crime scenes that investigators were able to recover and now those phones will now be taken to quantico in virginia for the fbi to look for to get content from that. And the hard drive from the couples computer is nowhere to be found. The fbi has subpoenaed to the big providers to get the content on those electronics. And the people involved in this investigation says that will be key and hopefully shed more light on what a motive is. At this point im being told that there is no clearcut motive. This could be a case of terrorism. But it also could just be a case of disgruntled employee. And talking to family members who have been very cooperative who say there was nothing to them that stood out about the couple in terms of them being extremists. So Syed Rizwan Farook was not on any watch lists. It doesnt appear he had any type of criminal record. What do we know about people he was communicating with via the internet or just communicating with . It was telefonicly. They were not high priorities. These are people that the fbi knew about and could be tied to international terrorism. These were soft connections over the course of the last several years. And there is nothing they found so far to indicate there were recent communications with these individuals around the time of the attack. If there were that could be key. But at this point, investigators arent putting too much weight on that. But again it is still early. And also overseas trips, overseas trips that he took . Thats right, we have learned that his last recorded trip was to saudi arabia in the summer of 2014. He went for the hajj and was there for nine days. It is believed it is there he met his wife who came to the United States on a marriage green card. But not a lot is known at this stage on what happened there. The trip has not raised red flags but officials are in touch with Saudi Arabian authorities to find out if there was something they missed. And of course they want to learn more about it. But nothing jumping out to indicate a clearcut motive. Stand by. I want to get to poppy harlow, inside of that vigil. I heard you say you heard the most beautiful music being played and what are people saying, how are they doing . It is the most beautiful music. Its stunningly gorgeous Acapella Group of teenagers got up and sang. And its the first time i have been able to sit back and take it all in and it broke my heart. The other song here, may you find comfort here and they opened with a prayer saying we are challenged but we are not hopeless the mayor talking about his conversation with president obama. Each of these people, thousands here tonight have their own story as to why theyre here. Gustava is here. He doesnt know anyone who was killed but he is here to find answers. Christina lost two friends in the shooting. A third friend was shot in the head. One of the friends who died, a father of six children, don. Mike wetzel. It is just mind boggling. There are a number of children there at the vigil tonight. How do they explain what happened to these kids . I think thats what surprised me the most. I see a mother to my left rocking a baby in a stroller. I was with a mother of five children. I said how do you tell them about this . And she said this is a difficult world. I cant shield them from the news. They watch with me and saw the worst of it yesterday. Today is sort of the best of it, if you think about bringing a community together. She doesnt have the answers and they have a lot of questions, of course, kids look up at their parents and ask these innocent questions and parents want to have answers. And tonight she wants answers about the best of her community. And she said i take them to church a lot because there is only so much in the world i can protect them from. That is difficult for us to hear but that is the reality today. People need faith at this moment. Poppy, appreciate that. When we come back, we know what the killers did but we dont know why. And the answers to this question could change everything. Was this terrorism . The way i see it, you have two choices; the easy way or the hard way. Were learning much more tonight about americas deadliest mass shooting since sandy hook but we still dont know if it was terrorism. Joining me is Paul Cruickshank and michael weiss. Paul, i want to start with you. You have breaking news tonight about isis in europe. What your sources telling you . This comes from a senior european counterterrorism official and security agencies have received intelligence that indicates that isis is aiming to hit the United Kingdom next, that british isis operatives in syria and iraq have been tasked by the terrorist organization to return home to the uk to launch attacks. All of this concern compounded by that vote in the house of commons in the uk yesterday where britain was authorities to launch air strikes against isis in syria. And it also follows on from the arrest last month of a british isis operative in istanbul. And officials telling cnn he was on the way back to europe with attack orders from isis. A lot of concern tonight about the terrorist threat to the uk given all those british extremists who have gone to syria and iraq, more than 700 and more than 350 returned back to europe at this point. Now we have turned to this in San Bernardino. But i have to ask you what is the latest on the hunt for Salah Abdeslam . Has it gone cold . Absolutely right. The trail has gone cold and it went cold the day after the attacks when Salah Abdeslam was dropped by a friend in a brussels district on the saturday after the attacks. They havent had any information on his whereabouts since then, the official now saying that he chickened out essentially of his suicide bombing in paris. He panicked. And he called up these contacts in brussels, these friends in a state of high anxiety asking them to come pick him up in paris and take him all the way back to belgium. The same official saying he now be persona non grata in isis. Because he aborted the final part of his mission. We heard the president say maybe it was a hybrid of Workplace Violence or terrorism. They havent ruled anything out. They had been radicalized or the possibility they had been radicalized. What to you think . This is a complicated one. He picked a target he knew intimately. He had attended the party and there was a dispute. He went home and got his gear which indicated it was clear he was planning something. You dont have tactical vests, assault rifles and pipe bombs because you snap one day. You know, so the question is, was he planning something imminently and then this was the trigger, or what it a combination . Human beings can be complicated creatures. It is possible and indeed likely he was radicalized remotely. The New York Times reported he was in touch with people from al shabaab. And the people were considered so low bar that eventually the fbi gave up on investigating it further. If he was radicalized i think it was a slow boil. If he was radicalized and all signs why not just say its terror. Any time you kill 14 people that is terrorizing a community and families. Im all for carrying out an investigation and not jumping the gun. I hate to use that phrase but honestly, isis they celebrated the attack. They department take credit for it. If its isis inspired they may never take credit for it. The way isis is trying to do things, they are sending operatives back from raqqah if they come from europe to plot and perpetrate the attacks such as the one in paris. The other method is you might call it a crowd sourcing jihad, stay where you are, here are the manuals. This is the way you build bombs and obtain guns. Go shoot up a school, go shoot up a civic center or whatever. When you do it and we find out you were inspired by us we will take credit for it. And the fact that he smashed the cell phones and tried to erase stuff from his hard drive he is trying to cover up a digital trail. We thought the soft targets when we were talking about paris and others, restaurants and venues easy to get into. Is this a new soft target, wherever you are, if you can create terror, thats where you do it . I think a lot of people are asking the question, why didnt they go and shoot up a ball game or theater. A ball game a mall. Somewhere where you have a lot more people. With the weapons and bombs, they could have killed a lot of people. This could have been far worse which begs the question, perhaps they were planning something at some point but we know there was an altercation at this holiday party. And maybe they changed the plans and launched the attack there instead. I think that is a real possibility. Over the last year or so we have seen these sort of mixed motive attacks where you have the workplace anger and also a terrorist motive. We saw that in oklahoma in 2014 where an extremist, a convert to islam was fired from his job at a Food Processing center and then when and beheaded a female coworkers. He had bin laden on his facebook and beheadings on his facebook. We saw a case in france in june, a fan of isis, he was angry with his boss. He was in a trucking Delivery Service and he beheaded his boss, strung the body on a fence and sent a selfie to isis in syria. So we have seen these kind of dual motivations before. Go ahead, michael. And this is not just one guy. This is the bonnie and clyde of terrorism. Are you surprised there is a woman involved . Im not surprised. If it was spontaneous. He goes home and says lets go blow up my office and she says okay and they deposit the small infant child with the grandparent and they go. It seem odd, doesnt it . There seems to have been some premeditation on this target. If they are looking for soft target and we know they are, the softest of soft targets are places you know and have access to. And obviously he was familiar with the internal layout of this building. So this could have been the plan all along. We dont know yet. Thank you, we will see you soon. Tonight the victims of the San Bernardino massacre are not just statistics. We know their names, their husbands and wives, sons, daughters, cousins, neighbors, friends, coworkers. Daniel kaufman is among them and his boyfriend ryan reyes joins me now. How are you holding up . Im doing okay at the moment. Still kind of surreal and kind of numb at the moment. You havent got much sleep, have you . No. Not really. I probably finally fell asleep via sleeping pills about 1 30 this morning and my phone started going off at 3 00 in the morning. It has been off and on all day and is trying to catch sleep when i can. And thats what when it first happened, you didnt hear from him, right . And then finally ill go through that later. But finally after hours and hours you took a handful of sleeping pills and you got to sleep and you woke up and heard the terrible news, correct . Correct. Correct. Tell me about daniel and his job at this Regional Center. Basically, what daniel did was there was a program that the irc had through another similar functioning type place called path ways. The program was through path ways but funded through the irc. It was basically a job training program. Daniels job was a job trainer to the client that he had. He was responsible for teaching him how to make the drinks, ring up sales, handle Customer Service stuff and just help him keep them on track while he was doing that type of thing. It sounds like admiral work, a noble profession he was trying to
