He lunged at the shooter was gave them enough time to hide and disarm the shooter. Now hes a hero. Instead of a high school graduate. I want you to listen to his father. Recounting the moments he realized he lost his son. He wasnt answering. Its like you expect your kid to pick up the phone and tell you leave me alone. I was guilty. I was trying to call him i thought maybe its the wrong thing. Maybe im putting his life in jeopardy by having the phone ring. I texted and tried to face time. I was getting nothing. My anxiety and the lump in my chest was growing. I couldnt believe it was happening to my son. One of the kids told me that like a flash he jumped up. Hes a hero. He saved me. Out the door and after this person. To tackle him. His parents. A hero. A dead child. Kendrick not the only one. Just last week we talked rilely howl. A hero in another School Shooting<\/a>. At unc charlotte. He ran at the shooter. Then he was shot pointblank and killed. Police say he took the shooter off his feet and by doing so saved countless lives. This is what his mother said tonight about the School Shooting<\/a> this week. It is just terrible that more families are going through this. And while im angry and feel em bat ltd, at the same time we have to instead of we have to galvanize and figure out how to come up with dialogue to keep this from happening. Shes right. We need to do something. Can we think about this . Were asking our children to be heroic enough to lay their lives on the line when people with guns start shooting in their classroom. Were asking them to be impossibly brave and strong. To have heart and courage and selflessness. What are we asking of ourselves . What are we going for them . Nothing. The truth that its a gunman they need to hide from. Its the adults. Within a week, one week. We have seen two examples of the best that our kids have to offer. So why cant with e give our best too . Every single one of us is just playing the odds at this point. The odds that in a country of 325 million souls, that we wont be the ones who get hit by the next bullet. That start flying. To be honest my life was going down a bad path. Prior to that shooting. I lost close friends. It changed my life around. And its a big reason im doing what im doing now. And i hope the kids kind of have that same thought. With them. They can move past this and turn something thats really negative into a positive. It does have lasting effects. It does. As a School Shooting<\/a> survivor yourself, what support was the most helpful to you . What did the community do . For me i think the most important thing was having good parents that kept a close eye on me. Made me do the right things. Being a 15 yearold kid at the time, i really didnt want to go through the pain and suffering of the funerals and visiting the parents that lost loved ones and my parents really made me do that. And im glad i did. That gave me closure. So, Kendrick Castillo<\/a> lost his life saving the other kids. Is there anything that you can say to his family or woud like to say . I think what he did hearing the reports is amazing. Hes a total hero. I know that doesnt bring their son back. Thats very sad. But its amazing. We learned a lot of lessons after columbine. And just hearing the stories its very amazing. What he did that day. What is your message to these parents but to all the parents who lost children to gun violence in schools . I know again youre a survivor. Whats your message . I think we need to take a dloes look at this. And make it a priority and fix it. A prosecutor saying tonight that previously unseen video taken from Sandra Blands<\/a> cell phone is not enough to reopen the criminal case stemming from her death in Police Custody<\/a> back in 2015, days after she was arrested for failing to use her turn signal. I spoke to Sandra Blands<\/a> sister sharon last night who is pushing for this case to be reopened. It took four years, kamau, for this video to come to light. Do you have any questions . Does this raise questions to you about the investigation and how the case was handled . You know, so many times with black people in this country that involves Law Enforcement<\/a> we dont get the benefit of the doubt and i think every black person who saw this from the very beginning seeing the whole thing allegedly broke down over her attitude knew there were a lot of fishy things going on here and we didnt need the cell phone video to know what the cops were saying was not true. I hope for her family they can get the investigation reopened. But black dont need this investigation reopened to know what happened there. Cell phone, social media, brought a lot of attention. Weve discussed this. A lot of attention to incidents like this that we otherwise never may have seen. But this took four years to come out. How many other cases like this, do you think there could be . I mean, you know, this goes back to the dawn of this country. You know, the emmett till, whistled at her just said a couple years ago it didnt actually happen that way. This is what this countrys built on. Weve had plenty of cell phone footage or Facebook Live<\/a> of black people being killed on camera by cops for doing nothing. Those investigations dont lead anywhere. We have oscar grant in oakland, more information came out about that, and that was ten years ago. Theres no end of these cases and right now in this country as we know theres not a lot of political will for justice. Youve been spending the whole program tonight talking about all the ways in which this country is not standing up for kids in schools who could be shot in School Shooting<\/a>s, not a political will for impeachment, not a lot of political will for justice in this country, theres political will for getting reelected. This is what united shades of america covers, the fbi covering they are investigating 350 people across the u. S. As possible domestic terrorists, a number of cases targeting White Supremacists<\/a> and white nationalists, jumping in the past six months. What is behind that . We have the same conversation all the time, don, the president of the United States<\/a> of america plays footsies with White Supremacists<\/a> regularly, he encourages them through his rhetoric, hate crimes are up because of that. The call is coming from inside the white house. We know its happening. Its coming from the white house. We did an episode last week called not all white people. White people have to stand up in their own communities against White Supremacy<\/a> because they dont feel like help is coming from local authorities or the president or elected officials. There are people in this country like the John Brown Gun Club<\/a> patrolling their own neighborhoods and showing up to protect their own people because they see the stuff happening in their neighborhoods. The Homeland Security<\/a> Committee Chair<\/a> agrees with you. Watch this. From charleston to oak cree to charlottesville, to garden city, weve seen these violent ideologies reel their ugly heads. Unfortunately, President Trump<\/a> has tried to play both sides with domestic terrorism. Why does the president continue to downplay the threat of White Supremacists<\/a> . Thats his base, don, weve had this conversation many times. Thats the base of who will push him into office. Because we use the Electoral College<\/a> theres a thumb on the scale of the will of American People<\/a> when it comes to electing american president s. He doesnt have to play to all of us, just to his base. Im happy to see were connecting these acts of white violence as an overall movement. Any time a muslim does this, theyre instantly put in isis or al qaeda. With white people they get to be individuals. Maybe well connect these together.
