CSPAN2 Bernie Sanders Discusses The Presidential Campaign June 23, 2016

This happened in a matter of less than two minutes. We have seen in communities all across america from sandy hook, to charleston, to san bernardino, to orlando, the carnage these weapons can cause. I ask american tonight, what is the civilian purpose for a high capacity clip that allows you to shoot up to a hundred bullet without reloading . You dont hunt with that or protect your home from that. I come from western pennsylvania. We have a lot of deer hunters. We dont hunt with those guns. Why should someone be able to buy such a bullet . Does the Second Amendment give us a right to buy a weapon that would only be able to purchase our officers vest . Why should anyone be able to buy body armor . What is the purpose of that in civilian society . These are weapons of war pure and simple. Tonight, is the very beginning, we are asking if you are on the nofly list and our government suspects you of maybe being connected to a terrorist organization so they dont want you on an airplane, we dont want you to be able to buy a gun. How much of a nobrainer is that . More republicans favor a ban on that than democrats but approaching the mid80 to 90 percent. Who is against background checks . He reflects on his president ial campaign and discusses future plans for his progressive movement. This is an hour. Senator Bernie Sanders, in a web cast last week you said quote the Political Revolution must continue into future. My question, what will that look like . It will look like millions more people becoming involved in the political process. We have a dormant political process right now. One of goals of our campaign was to revitalize american demomeracy and bring young people, working class people, people who have given up on the political process or havent ever been involved to jump in and say this is our country and we want to have a say in the future. It should not just be the Koch Brothers and the super pacs. And i think you will see a lot of new people running for office. Not only Major National offices, congress and senate, but for state assembly, city council. We need to get people involved in running for office at every level of government because what happened at the statewide level or Community Level is extremely important. And number three, what we have seen in terms of the fight for 15 dollar an hour minimum wage. Chatting here fives years ago we would not have thought that would be possible. It happened because of grassroots activism. Climate change and ending fracking, we have seeing people stand up for issue after issue. That is what i mean by keeping the Political Revolution going. Focused on the campaign and what is next. I want to share first what the New York Times said about the announcement mr. Sanders bid is considered a long shot. Cnn said it is a race that has been dominated by Hillary Clinton. The Washington Post said money may be his biggest problem. What changed . Well, i think what has changed is i think many people have begun to understand how far removed from reality much of the media really is. David brooks writes for the New York Times. He is a moderate republican and not someone i agree much with. But he said i am a pundant and i have conclude we dont know much about what is going on in america because everything we say is wrong. I think for the New York Times and other media establishments what they have to understand is they are far removed from the reality of where the American People are. So, steve, to answer your question, it turns out the American People are not happy with economics in america. Why should they be . They are working longer hours for lower wages. 47 Million People living in poverty. Shock all of shock the American People are not happy about a corrupt Campaign Finance system in which a handful of billionaires are able to elect candidates. They are not happy about a broken criminal justice system. They are not happy about what we are doing on Climate Change or Immigration Reform or the fact so many of our people are having a hard time going to college or graduating deeply in debt. Despite what the establish thought in talking to each other it turns out life for ordinary americans today is hard, they are unhappy and they want real change. That is what we talked about. I was surprised by the speed in which that response came but not by the fact we got that response. I want to play something for you. Over the last 18 years in the cspan Video Library we have covered you 1200 times. As a mayor, member of congress and president ial candidate. From 1990 acspan call in. Gl the average american is angry and disgusted with politics. The job of us as progressives is to articulate the issues in the community and country. People say you are crazy, you cannot talk about those issues. But you can. We have to redefine the nature of the discussion. Our position should be it is the congress not talking about the real issues. We have to do that. When you see that your thoughts . I that was just me a brief second ago. There is a bubble here inside the beltway there is a bubble in which members of congress, the media, the establishment looked at reality in a different way. We will get back to your question here in a minute. Is what has saddened be, not shocked be, but saddened me, is the degree to which corporate media, and i use that word advice because they have realize these channels are owned by large corporations. They work for large Multi National corporations. They are hard working writers, i cannot believe how much they produce. But there is a belief within the beltway and establishment that what is a campaign about . A campaign about is personality and individuality. Lets talk about donald trump and Hillary Clinton. What about talking about the American People . That is not part of what the media discourses about and the last, week or ten days of the campaign in california, four press conferences with really, really smart people at my side talking about health care and the crisis of health care. Talking about fracking and the need to end fracking. Talking about Climate Change. Talking about economics with robert rice at my side. You know how much coverage i got . Very little. That is not what the media is interested in. The American People want to know how you will get decent jobs for their kids, what are you doing about the fact a single mom cant make it on 11 bucks an hour, what are you doing about Affordable Housing . That is where the American People are at which is very different from the place where media is at looking at politics as a baseball game or soap op a opera. Why have the middle class families over the years declined . That is one of the problems so thank you for asking that question. I think there are a number of reasons. I think clearly you will have minimum wage, not keeping up with inflation so the minimum wage at seven and a quarter an hour and those working eight and nine dollars an hour they are learning a lot less than low wage workers did in the past. I think it has to do with a disaster trade policy that enabled large Multi National corporations to shutdown and move to china, mexico, and other low wage countries. I think it has a lot to do with it decline in the trade union movement. How do you make trade free and fair . I am not sure you can. I think we are looking at fair trade. So in a fundamental since we have to rethink those notions. Of having to do with our trade policies. And the relations with china. United technologies few months ago of the multinational corporations and mexico pays 3 per hour. And we have to tell these guys you want to be beneficiaries of the american en economy you will not put American Workers out on the street. It is a significant part of reducing the workforce the trade policies and the Free Trade Movement in the single most significant force to make sure they have decent paying jobs and decent benefits and then it would drive those wages up and it is very hard to form a union and to make it easy but we need that so then you will see the attacks of the government and scott walker. Lets be clear in my view there is a war against the working people of this country. They wanted all they want to drive the wages down. They want to abolish that concept of medicare and medicaid. They wanted all. That is saying saree will not. Are there companies that what america before profits . Absolutely. Some ceos say we have a great deal less split the profits. A growing number by the way it is really good. And then they sit down together to say it is a tough year what should we do . What do you think . And that is a direction and those that is the very significant to involve the people in their work that is not the case right now. And the people watching this program they say i have to go to work today i need health care. And other question is to change the Financial Aid program by the federal government. And they say it is a practical. I think it is obsolete. And as a Global Economy is highly competitive germany they are smart enough to say we want to attack at intellectual capability. It is insane literally in my mind young people that could be engineers and they can afford to go to college. We made the world aware of this. That have onerous levels that when i began this campaign to become a doctor thats redo it primary health care we need primarycare physicians we need that. And the stories repeat themselves every day talking out of college after two years with 55 years of age more suited debt to day then he did with the Social Security benefits will be off that is not within the realm of what rationality will lead anybody to get the best education that they can force human reasons for the also for economic reasons but in the year 2016 good free Public Education and talk about free tuition with colleges and universities. City have onetenth of 1 in terms of wealth and income in these are people that sit at the head of the wall street institutions that own enormous amount of stock. And i went to a the vatican a couple of months ago to speak at a conference and that is is something we talk about. That is what the struggle is about. Can you create an economy to produce wealth . But it is distributed in a way that is much more fair and equitable than is currently the case. We have 47 million in poverty. That the pine ridge native American Indian reservation and a Life Expectancy and that is going on in america today. With the Life Expectancy because many are in jail. People dont know this and what is going on in america today. The reason i talk about that where the top onetenth of 1 it owns about as much wealth 50 percent of all new income event is an economy to be proud of. And not saying everybody has the same burden tom. To do away with poverty you can guarantee health care. Talk about the campaign was there a turning point where you thought we can win this thing . When we begin it was funny what i said a moment ago was i thought that the idea is that we had would resonate with the American People. To represent vermont but these ideas resonated it by had a chance to get out to talk about them and we walked in i remember we were in minnesota. And think even before declaring my candidacy we were driving to the location to give the speech there was a long line of people. I said what is going on there is their concert . It turned out those 6,000 people were coming to our event in minneapolis. That was even before a was a candidate. There are pitchers from portland dance seattle was angeles 30,000 people attending in the summer and fall. Take a look at those pictures. That is a lot of people. Did the crowd to energize you . I guess. I am one of those people in fact, i get energy from people indicted isnt only the quantity but for 28,000 or 22,005,000 but much of it is looking into the eyes of those who really do want to see this country do much better that are prepared to fight for this country or take on the big money interests and create a very different type and that energy just flowed into mcadoo threeyear for even today with many thousands of people a desire to take this opportunity at arnold is a record or not obama as campaign was brilliant but we talked to close to 1. 5 Million People came to our rallies it does want to thank natalie all those people but the hundreds of thousands that would knock on doors and volunteer. I will play one advertisement the catalog of attention right before the new cancer New Hampshire primary. What did you learn about america in this campaign . Evet gives me tinkles it is beautiful. Thanks to the crew for putting it together. What that is about is the potential of america. What i learned is a politician there are Beautiful People all over the country and i am a smalltown guy and throughout my career you always go home and never stay in washington to town Hall Meetings for Public Officials i have done thousands of for the years. You go around this country or have the opportunity to go to places where 46 states to see people that i really have not met we put together a great latino crew that was fantastic because this is not a major issue that i was all that familiar with but while talking to young kids with what you remember with the images in my mind from phoenix, arizona after iceboat half a dozen young latino kids tears were literally coming down their cheeks with years of being deported so i had to learn a lot about criminal Justice Reform with the africanamerican communities and rapids to families with a father figure is in jail. I saw this in the 50s with Police Relationships in vermont is very different and the cities all over the country a lot of people are fearful of the police i didnt know of assisting california few weeks ago i went to flint michigan imagine talking to a mother whose child has had cognitive damage because the beautiful child was very smart and gregarious and now in special education because of the water they drink my wife had to leave the room she was in tears went to birmingham alabama the second jimcrow is reappearing in birmingham which is based on economics if you go to california, i did not know this, there are homes return on the Drinking Water you cannot drink the water per cry did not know that. There are many thousands of homes you cannot drink the water in the United States of america because of pesticides. I did not know what was going on in or did i read about it about the severity but was not really familiar but going into the latino communities and africanamerican communities Beautiful People so generous and so warm to get very little back in return believe me it was quite an education. The passionate you have and all of these issues would be reflected in the denver credit Party Platform . It will be as we speak were working on right now. It will be by far the plan for in terms of economics or Climate Change the sense of criminaljustice and Higher Education and did many other areas. Have you begun to prepare your speech . Will you speak . It is hard to say. I am not the nominee so i will
