As the president and the team he assembled to fight coronavirus were holding their News Conference of the white house we got word from the cdc that a person in Northern California has tested positive for the virus. The patient who is being treated in sacramento is also the first person in the u. S. Who did not have a relevant travel history or exposure to another coronavirus patient. Its always possible this person did come in contact with somebody else who came back from china but for now, Health Officials are investigating this as an instance of community spread. They are in the process of tracing the patients recent history. San diego and San Francisco have already declared states of emergency because of coronavirus and today, Orange County followed suit. Watch. In general it expands our ability to respond in a nimble and flexible way. That being said, its in preparation for what we might need to do. President trump tried to ease fears, saying his administration as the situation under control and is ready to adapt if the virus spreads. The president did directly contradict his Health Officials by saying he does not think the spread of the disease is inevitable. Despite democrats unsurprising criticism of the administrations efforts to control the virus, the president , cdc and the National Institutes of health all agree that so far the virus has been well contained. Now the president has put Vice President mike pence in charge of the administration response. In recent days, the white house met with over 40 state county and city Health Officials from over 30 states and territories discuss how to respond to this, to the potential threat of the coronavirus. Coronavirus has not yet been declared a pandemic, though it certainly fits most of the criteria. Heres where we stand. Worldwide there are more than 81,000 cases in 39 countries and more than 2700 people have died. France has now reported the first coronavirus death of a french citizen. The largest european outbreak is still in northern italy. The first latin american case has now been reported in brazil. The number of cases continue to rise in south korea but new cases in china, the epicenter of the virus, are reportedly on the decline. Shannon. Shannon all right. Some skeptics about those numbers. We will track them. Thank you very much. Where are the vulnerabilities in the u. S. When it comes to the coronavirus . Correspondent Gillian Turner takes a look tonight. The federal governments mantra when it comes to protecting americans from a coronavirus outbreak in the homelands preparation. So far the cdc alone has deployed nearly 1400 staff nationwide. Scientists, doctors, nurses and researchers. The immediate risk to the American Public has been and continues to be low. The degree of risk has the potential to change quickly and we can expect to see more cases in the United States. Preparation measures already in place nationwide include identifying communities most susceptible to outbreak. Given the high volume of travel between San Francisco and mainland china, and the spread of the virus to other countries, there is a growing likelihood that we will see cases in San Francisco. Cdc teams are working hand in glove with Homeland Security at 11 airports to screen travelers returning to the u. S. From china. Cdc is also working with multiple agencies, including the pentagon, state department, and hhs to be five medical labs across the country. Racing a dense the clock to develop a vaccine. There is more the government should do say officials. Conducting preparedness drills in hospitals and design makeshift care facilities. Global circumstances have just as likely this virus will cause a pandemic. In that case, Risk Assessment would be different and new strategies tailored to local circumstances would need to be implemented. Public Health Sources say keeping americans safe during an outbreak at home will require transparency. Ten you tell us anything about this case now in california where we hear that they do not know the connection doubt this person who apparently tested positive for the virus got the virus. I can tell you very, very little. I was on a Conference Call with the office of emergency services, california offense as well as the department of health and theres very little information. Basically weve already said. We do know that we have a case of Community Infection. They are trying to run down where and how and who this person may have been talking to our been around. Dont know yet. However, it is very, very clear that we are in a situation where there will be more infections. Travel continues in and out of the United States, even including asian countries. And this illness is found no in 80 Different Countries around the world. So yes, they are going going to be more opportunities for infection. The front line of defense is the individual. Take care of yourself, dont sneeze. Dont let people sneeze on you. Practice good hygiene and the rest. The second line of defense is the Public Health system. Thats where the president s proposal i think is lacking. Two and a half billion dollars has a good shot. A billion of that for a vaccine which will come months from now if at all. And the other is for equipment. The Public Health sector however has to be beefed up. People are going to have to be hired. Its going to have to be put into high gear immediately because that is the second line of defense. And frankly the president we need to fund that and im quite sure congress will do so. Shannon the president said its where the Congress Wants to give me more money that im asking for but he said he would leave it to you to figure it out. I know there are estimates as high as 7 billion, 8 billion. He is leaving that to you. But he said he worried people are exploiting it for a political advantage. Heres what he said today in his press conference about House Speaker nancy pelosi. We should all be working together. She is trying to create a panic and theres no reason to panic. She knows its not true. All they are trying to do is get a political advantage. Shannon what do you make of that, congressman . Do you think that theres a way to be nonpartisan or bipartisan . Of virus does not respect party. Is not a democrat or republican virus. The backandforth might be considered to be a virus. The reality is that for the congress to do anything, its going to have to be bipartisan. Your next guest is a leader in the senate on the republican side. He and i and other democrats and republicans will have to work together. I do believe that what the president asked for, apparently he now understands its not going to be sufficient now that we know that we have a Community Infection situation and we have more and more people coming into the United States. So yes we are going to need to do more. Also one of the things that was noted in the california Conference Call is that the testing kits are really not available. Thats going to be an immediate need. Why that situation exists is something that really needs to be addressed immediately. Otherwise there will be illnesses and whatnot. Whether its the common floor common cold or covid19. Theres been allegations the administration has cut back on important places like cdc or nih or wanted to. We are the most prepared nation in the world. Johns Hopkins University says that. A number of years ago we put in place a infections disease Rapid Response team to do that. There is deployment of those resources. Thats why we are so prepared. This thing could turn on us quickly, so we have to be ever vigilant. We have had a number of briefings from all of the officials that you saw there with the president and Vice President today, as recently as yesterday, went through all this. Secure briefing for the senate. Most members were there, spent over an hour on ways to treat, identify, the ways to test, what vaccination may be available. What we are doing now with quarantine. And there is bipartisan agreement this has to be adequately funded. Every meeting weve had weve said do you have what you need . Up until this point they said yes, from a financial standpoint they do but now we need to do more. Shannon i want to reference what i discussed with congressman garamendi about House Speaker nancy pelosi. After the president s press Conference Today which went on and on. He answered a lot of questions. I think he enjoys those. He wasnt ready to go. He spent a lot of time directly taking questions and answering. This is what she said the Trump Administration has mounted an opaque and chaotic response to this outbreak. The Trump Administration is left critical positions in charge of managing pandemics of the National Security council and the department of Homeland Security vacant. Thats a criticism of this administration gets a lot, there are key positions that arent filled. Does she have a point . I think she doesnt. She and Chuck Schumer have been playing politics. I think its wrong as a doctor and as a senator. We ought to be focused on Public Health. I think both chuck and nancy wake up every day saying what can we blame on President Trump today . Its really too bad to see that happening. I havent seen Chuck Schumer at any of the briefings that weve had, and none of them. I think hes very distressed that Bernie Sanders continues to be the lead voice of their party at a time when Chuck Schumer is trying to become the majority leader of the senate and its not going the way hed like. Bloomberg says the president slashed funding on the cdc, eliminated the white house chain of command coordinating the response to pandemic and waged war on science from the moment he took the oafs office. So the 2020 contenders are coming hard after the president. They did yesterday. They didnt get to coronavirus until 80 minutes in the debate but then they all piled on. We are to be focused on the health of the nation. This virus started in china and we talked about the fact that the young doctor died. He was the one that was reprimanded by china by trying to spread the word about the disease. This could go worldwide. We have more and more countries involved right now. We are prepared, more prepared than anyone else. We have to be ever vigilant. The America Hospital associatiog with the center that oversees all ebola training. Authorities have yet to identify a motive in a shooting at the molson coors complex where a gunman killed five coworkers before killing himself. Matt finn is on the scene for an update. Shannon, a total of six people are dead here at the molson coors campus in tonight Police Confirmed they have notified all the family of the victims. They are not going to release the victims names for a full 24 hours in order to allow outoftown family time to get here to milwaukee. Police say that it roughly 1,000 people that work here on the campus of molson coors and as oe were finally able to systematically identify each worker and release them. Police responded to the shooting around 2 00 p. M. Local time to discover the 51 male shooter died of selfinflicted wounds. The five victims were all employees. The president is offering his condolences. Before i begin, i would like to extend my deepest condolences to the victims and families in the walkie wisconsin in milwaukee, wisconsin. Earlier today a wicked murderer open fire at a mos Molson Coors Brewing company plant, taking the lives of five people. A number of people were wounded. Some badly wounded. Our hearts break for them and their loved ones. We send our condolences. We will be with them. Its a terrible thing. Milwaukee police say the shooter was a molson coors employee but they have not indicated whether he was disgruntled or the motive might be. Please keep in mind this is an active and fluent scene and the investigation is also ongoing and active. There is no threat at this time. We will continue to investigate throughout the night.
