FOXNEWSW On The Record With Greta Van Susteren May 18, 2016 23:00:00

Tap dance. There it is, the door. Thanks for tining us in tonight. Thats it for special report. Here comes greta and special report online begins in three seconds. Tonight, on the record, all your news right here. Ivanka trump talking about her father and women. You will hear directly from ivanka straight ahead. Also, danger, the new threat every president ial can at that time is facing tonight. The freddie grayord in trial and new information about when that verdict will come down. Right now facebook trying to clean up the mess over news that the social media empire manipulated your news feed to be more liberal. A meeting wrapping up moments ago. Fox news Claudia Cowan is outside facebook headquarters for us. Claudia . And, greta, we are already hearing from one of the attendees that this meeting was a success and that Facebook Ceo Mark Zuckerberg was sincere in organizing this gathering to quiet the storm of controversy currently surrounding his social media company. Zuckerberg really doing some serious damage control here following reports that his company deliberately expresses news and issues that are important to conservatives. Its an allegation he denies but there are lots of questions about facebooks controversial trending topic section and how it works. Facebook claims a special algorithm blindly combs the site for what people are reading and comes up with a list of whats trending, regardless of politics. But according to one former facebook staff, conservative stories get down played because the news curators who designed and worked the algorithm push a liberal agenda. Zuckerberg needs to show that stories, for instance, irs scandal or benghazi get as much play as stories about, say, transgender bathrooms and same sex marriage. Dana perino, fox news cohost of the five says facebook was smart to act fast and call this meeting. The perception problem big headache. And they cant afford to lose the trust of about half of American Voters and participants in the process because facebook as a brand really needs to keep that trust. It takes years to build trust and only a moment to lose it. Critics point out that facebooks chief news curator is a big supporter of Hillary Clinton and that zuckerberg himself has been active in immigration reform. Cofounding a nonprofit called forward u. S. Thats driving policy change in an area thats important to many liberals. So, a lot of todays meeting high tech in nature, talking about that al gore recidivism algorithm and thousand stories trend. A lot of todays meeting rebuilding trust and reassuring group of conservative commentators that personal viewpoints are not spilling over on to this website that reports to be unbiased. Back to you. Claudia, thank you. Rob louie, the editor and chief for the daily signal was inside that meeting and chairman of the conservative union matt slapp turned down invitation to go. Claudia characterized it as, quote, a success. Do you agree with that characterizationization and what makes it a success . Well, i think it was a first step. Lets put it that way. It was a conversation that i think facebook should have had a while ago. It certainly opened the door. And i think it will be a success if facebook follows through and continues the conversation with conservatives. Not just conservatives but i think they should be ebb continuing the conversations with everybody in the political spectrum to make sure they are treating all the content fairly and not discriminating or suppressing any political points of view. Do they deny it . He did not they talked a little bit about the al for rhythm. There is actually a continuation of more meetings taking place right now on the campus. In which they will go into greater detail. One thing that came out that was clear, certainly they need to do a better job of educating both the publishers, conservative news sights and conservatives in general about how the website operates. I took away a Greater Transparency and conversation Going Forward. Rob, if you will hold on for a second. Matt, you didnt go. Why didnt you go . I didnt go because i think this is a p. R. Stunt. I think they needed conservatives to sit around the table so that after the meeting they can say we have met with all these conservatives and we had this great conversation going. And Everything Everything is going to be smoothed over with conservatives. What i just heard from rob and i love rob, rob is a good guy. What i just heard from rob is they didnt apologize. They didnt admit it . They didnt acknowledge they have a problem. They are doing their own investigation on this internal. I thats why i said the fox out of the chicken coop. This is an old clinton ploy. We checked it out and everything is fine. They are not promising transparency. I want to see exactly how they treat conservatives and treat everyone. Rob, what did they say about doing the investigation . Why not give it to somebody outside the organization . Doctor zuckerberg say anything about that . Well, two points. I do want to acknowledge that, matt, they did acknowledge that they do have a problem and i think that was one of the reasons that they had all the conservatives come out for this meeting. Is it a problem with a pr or do they have a problem in that they are sorting through and deliberately massaging what goes in that trending section . Which is the problem . So the throning section was one peels of it conversation about the news feed and certain conservative pages maybe getting blocked or taken off of facebook conversation extended beyond trending topics which is a relatively minor piece. What i dont understand is the problem is they think they have a pr problem or the problem that they are doing it . Well,. They certainly acknowledge that there was a problem with getting the message out to conservatives in terms of having correspondence and communication with them on a regular basis. And they need to do a better job of that there was clear, clear distinction of that. On the investigation piece, greta, they are going to respond to senator john thune who is with the Commerce Committee and has promised an inquiry on this. We would expect to hear more on that soon. Nobody outside the organization of facebook is planning to investigating. As far as i know. They will be conducting that interriblely. I was more sympathetic to facebook until now it looks like to me i realize rob and dana went there and very good that they went there and talked. They havent said they have a problem beyond a p. R. Problem. Look. When youre gonna really solve a problem you dont start communicating. Communicating is not the problem with facebook. Everyone has a Good Relationship with facebook in and out of there. What they havent done is acknowledged they have done something wrong. Whistle blowers be. Is it wrong . Cant facebook put whatever they want. Im a conservative. I dont think the government needs to intervene and tell facebook how to run its business. You cant fraudulently explain that your business operates one way when it operates another way. If they are the New York Times and the Washington Post and want to run their company like the lefty that they they have the right. We have a right to know thats how the algorithm works. Go ahead. No. I was going to say, to matts point they acknowledge that and they made that message loud and clear from the conservatives in the room. If facebook is going to be a neutral arbiter and be fair across the board they have to live up to the standards. Thats a high barred for them to meet. If they want to present themselves as a liberal entity like the New York Times and the Washington Post admit it conserving also know where they stand on the platform. As it stands facebook reaches over a billion people. A lot of conservatives use it the Heritage Foundation daily signal will continue to be active on facebook because we know thats a community where conservatives certainly value and some back away and probably step off of facebook as a result of the recent p. R. Controversy. Let me give matt. This is positive step. Let me give matt the last word on. This well before facebook called they only called me when we had a problem. We met with facebook and said hey, help us understand how to use your platform. Help cpac how we get our message out better. They werent interested in helping us. They got caught with their pants down. Hands in the cookie jar. Thats probably a nicer description. Thank you both. We will see what facebook does do. Trump sat down for a meeting with former secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Former speaker of the house and coauthor of the brand new book we discovering god in America Newt Gingrich goes on the record. Good evening great to be with you. Good evening. They all went to kiss the ring on Donald Trumps hand. Today we saw donald trump go down and see Henry Kissinger. Whats up . Yes. First of all, henry is 92. I think its a legitimate legit visiting him to kiss his ring. Henry depose all the way to president john f. Kennedy. Its amazing how long henry has been involved in National Security issues. I think its a good thing. They know each other. They have talked by phone. But this was a good hour long meeting. And i recently visited with henry for a couple of hours. Is he still remarkably current and has a lot of very useful insights. He has been a guest here on the record many times. He has always been fascinating to interview. Whole getting into the car and almost like the broncho case o. J. Simpson the cameras followed donald trump crossing fifth avenue headed down to see kissinger. Part of the phenomenon of donald trump and why he won the nomination so decisively. Also, sort of caught in this problem now. Okay. He is going to be the nominee. Should he go listen to really smart people or is that a sign he doesnt know enough . I think its a pretty smart thing to recognize that in Foreign Policy and National Security there is some people really worth visiting and Henry Kissinger would be on that list. All right, mr. Speaker, moments ago, donald trump using the word rape when talking about president bill clinton. That was in an interview with sean hannity that will air tonight at 10 00 p. M. Eastern. Your thoughts . The reference as i understand it and i havent seen the whole interview is he was accusing the New York Times not doing much of an investigation when they spent six weeks and two reporters on him. Since i havent seen the interview, i have no idea what trump was referring to, i mean, there have been all sorts of allegations. There have been people come out of the woodwork. I always thought it was bizarre that the New York Times decides they are going to take on donald trump when his relationship with women and do such a bad job that the centerpiece of their story goes on tv to say that the New York Times whole story was a lie, exactly the opposite of what she said. Meanwhile, have you, for example, clinton took a whole series of trips with a convicted pedophile, including five trips where he left behind the secret service. And, if i were the New York Times, i wouldnt want to get involved pill is such a targetrich environment. Why would you even look at trump . He is not the candidate. Does that make a difference . At what point how much is Hillary Clinton going to get attacked because of the whatever her husband does or doesnt do. Is he on the campaign trail. One of the issues that trump is going to clearly come in on is what hillarys relationship was both with bill and with the women. All sorts of allegations about that in addition he gets into this issue about treating women. I point out recently the Clinton Foundation pays men 38 more than women. You have a whole series of these things where they say one thing over here and do a totally different thing over here. All right. Let me ask you a quick question. Are you being vetted in any short of way for this Vice President job in the fbi called you . Has trump called you. No. No one has called you. No one has called me. Anyone who works for trump called you . Not about that. I talk to the Trump Campaign all the time. We have not a Single Person has talked to me about being vetted in any way. All right. Mr. Speaker. Nice to talk to you. No one has talked to me. Thank you. This is a fox news alert. Donald trump releasing a list of 11 potential trump nominees to the United States Supreme Court. Fox news correspondent Shannon Bream is outside the high court. Shannon . All right, greta. This is a list that we think the trump camp released in an effort to beef up his conservative credentials with those who doubt him. You look at this list, and it is, you know, kind of for some conservatives a wish list of the kind of people or persons, actual individuals they would like to see on the court. A mix of federal and state judges. These arent academics or lawmakers, people who dont have a judicial paper trail. Its established. People can check them out. Lets talk through a few of the contenders so we know who talking about here. Stevencologyton federal judge. Princeton and yale grad. He is considered a conservative. He clerked for chief Justice William rehnquist, you know, one of the conservative icons here at the court. Also on this list diane sycks, she has long been on the conservatives wish list. Female. Conservative, served on the seventh circuit. Also appointed by george w. Bush, notable opinions pushing back really tough gun restriction notice chicago area. Another federal judge on this list also appointed by president bush 43 William Pryor who served on the 11th circuit. He has been involved in controversial things in alabama. Also known because of his initial nomination to the bench by bush 43 was held up in a democratic filibuster. He was in a recess appointment to the bench. Eventually part of a bipartisan bill gang of 14 in the senate. He did make it to that seat where he now serves on the federal bench. Interesting there are state judges involved here from the colorado Supreme Court, from the utah Supreme Court. We have Justice Thomas lee. He is the brother of senator mike lee, somebody who has also been suggesting as a potential nominee to the court here. He clerked for Justice Clarence thomas, also a conservative hero here at the high court. You have got a very interesting wild card pick, i think, from the Texas Supreme Court. Justice don willet from down there. We have talked about his twitter feed. I have followed him. Cheeky guy on twitter. He takes shots. Mostly good natured shots at public figures and he has tweeted about donald trump, basically saying i cant imagine the kind of person that he would nominate to the high court. Now Justice Willet finds himself on this list. Number of people come from key states colorado, iowa, missouri, minnesota. Pennsylvania. Places that we know. It would be good for the Trump Campaign to have favorable chatner those states. One of the folks we reached on this list said he had never heard anything about it. Nobody reached out to him. He had no idea that he was being considered or vetted in any way. Another justice or judge has come out publicly and said the same thing as well, greta. Interesting to note as well today that trump said, listen, im not married to this list, essentially im not going to tell you its going to be exactly one of these 11 but it will be these kinds of people. Definitely speaking to the conservatives who have doubts about what he might do. Shannon, thank you. Umhuh. Why did donald trump make these picks and why release the names now . Senior policy advisor to the donald Trump Campaign Steven Miller goes on the record. Good evening, sir. Hey, great to be here. Okay. So who actually put this list together . Did donald trump sit down in a room and put this list together with anybody. This list started getting put together actually right after the very unfortunate and untimely passing of justice ask a lee a you may remember in that debate donald trump named the first two names or two of the names that you cichon that list judge pryor and judge sycks. He began directing at that moment in time a process for a nationwide search to find the best proconstitution judges in the country as a guide for what kind of judge he would pick so we dont repeat some the mistakes of the past we have seen with republican president s who have chosen judges with thin records, not well known, not a lot of case history and then we have gotten some pretty terrible surprises. All right. Now, obviously everyone is consumed with the Texas Supreme Court Justice Willet, he is quite active on twitter. Not as active as donald trump. Is that problems with the vet . Have you thought about that . I think what makes this list so special is the rigorousness with which the decisions were made solely and exclusively based upon what these records show about fidelity to the constitution of the United States. Judicial philosophy and avoids law making from the bench. Okay. The list is actually quite extensive. Has he met with any of these people . Well, the way you too Something Like this is you want
