I didnt think that gave me license to real creative freedom or the ability to change it up completely. Then, comic books long have been the domain of boys and young men. But the booming business of superheroes is now playing to a growing audience of girls and young women and hiring people who reflect that. Were telling more stories about women. Were telling more stories about minorities. Thats really important. Because then people start realizing that, oh, yes, superheroes are amazing but theres something in their experience that is very much something that i can connect to. Plus, the invickive game. Woundle mel tear men and women from across the globe brought together by prince harry to compete and to remind the world of the wars still ongoing. Back in 2008 i got put out of afghanistan after seven weeks. I opened up to find three young british soldiers all in comas, wrapped in plastic, tubes coming out of their mouths, and i just spent a little bit of time just sitting there looking at it all. So that was where it all started for me and i realized that i have to do something. Jenna bush hager will have that story a bit later in the show. Lets begin with the latest on the race for president with the picture a lot clearer than it was a week ago at this time. Donald trump now the Presumptive Republican nominee. He was campaigning out west yesterday. Last night he turned his fire on Hillary Clinton, once again launching a personal attack against his likely democratic opponent and her husband, the former president of the United States. Shes married to a man who was the worst abuser of women in the history of politics. Hillary was an enabler, and she treated these women horribly. Just remember this. And some of those women were destroyed, not by him, but by the way that Hillary Clinton treated them after everything went down. Holly jackson is covering the president ial campaign at the white house this morning. Good to see you as always on a sunday morning. People having flashbacks right now to the 1990s. Is this what we have to look forward to over the next six months . Personal attacks by donald trump going back to bill clintons years in the white house . Yeah, except in the 90s, remember, the trumps and clintons were at least friendlier, willie. This is a preview of what we can expect to see as we head into the fall with Hillary Clinton the likely democratic nominee, trump the Presumptive Republican nominee. You say this come together over the last 48 to 72 hours. Becoming very clear that for donald trump attacks against bill clintons impeachment scandal are not off limits. A couple of other ways he may go after Hillary Clinton, he talked about her stance on the Second Amendment and gun rights. Thats an area where were going to see him go after her more. All of this is coming to the as he has solidified a week in which it has become clear hes the guy on the republican side, his competitors dropping out, but the gop still bitterly divided over whether or not to support him. Interesting wrinkle in this campaign over the last couple of days, hallie. You had senator Elizabeth Warren of massachusetts going on a tweet storm against donald trump. Shes been very critical of him. Donald trump responding calling her goofy. Is she now out front positioning herself perhaps to be a Vice President ial candidate and a hatchet woman for Hillary Clinton . Probably less likely that she would be considered on that Vice President ial ticket. But certainly taking on that traditional role of the attacker. The hatchet person for Hillary Clinton. You saw donald trump go after her calling her goofy, coining this nickname. And warren tweeting right back, saying its a lame nickname. She calls him weak. She slammed his dangerous vision for america in this series of tweet storms and donald trump has spent a significant portion of his rally last night talking about elisabeth warren, hitting her very hard. There are some especially in the Democratic Community on the more liberal side who want to see Elizabeth Warren elevated to a higher position. This is a way for her to take on trump directly. Hallie jackson at the white house. Thanks so much. It is an apocalyptic scene in canada this morning where a massive wild fire is still raging. Officials now say it could be months before firefighters can get it under control. Houses are burning to the ground in just minutes. As the rapidly moving wild fire engulfs nearly 800 square miles. Officials fear it could eventually reach saskatchewan which is some 500 miles away. Miguel almaguer has been on the front lines in alberta all week. What are you seeing this morning . Willie, good morning. The fire is really exploded insize and why not . Theres the perfect recipe out here for the perfect storm. The conditions remain extremely gusty. During the day the temperatures are warm, and the humidity is low. Thats really the triple threat that firefighters fear the most. This blaze is feeding on millions of dead trees out in this forested area, so every day we have watched it as it crowns in trees, as it explodes in size and races in multiple directions. Some 1600 structures, mostly all homes, have been destroyed. That number is sure to skyrocket. If there is some good news here, willie, the fire while still very, very aggressive, is moving away from homes at this hour. But firefighters warn us that could change at any minute. Those pictures are just mind blowing. Miguel, thank you so much. An incredible view this morning of natures fury. This half mile wide tornado caught on camera as it barreled through rural eastern colorado. Five people suffered minor injuries. The storm caused some damage as you can see. Overturning trees and vehicles along the way. The notorious drug lord Joaquin El Chapo guzman has been moved to a new prison this morning, and its just across the border from el paso, texas. Mexican officials moved el chapo on saturday because of upgrades being done to the prison near mexico city. Hopefully this time a u. S. Government official says the move does not mean el chapo will be extradited to the states any time soon. Theres a single winner just one this morning of the 429 million powerball drawn last night. The winner is in new jersey. Mercer county, to be specific. If youre looking at your ticket, the lucky numbers 5, 25, 26, 44, and 66, the powerball number was 9. Powerball jackpot now goes back to a measly 40 million bucks. Were in full graduation season this weekend. President obama the Commencement Speaker at Howard University on saturday where he urged the students to use their passions to take action instead of sitting by and waiting for things to change. The president also joked about the state of the country graduates are entering. America is by almost every measure better than it was when i graduated from college. It also happens to be better off than when i took office but thats a longer story. Nyquist your winner at the kentucky derby. Went in as a 21 favorite and delivered. With jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard. Nyquist holding off exaggerator by 1 1 4 lengths. The second leg of the triple crown completed last year by American Pharoah is in 13 days at the preakness. And olympic legend Michael Phelps is a new dad. Phelps sharing this picture on instagram on saturday holding his new son Boomer Robert phelps. Fiancee Nicole Johnson gave birth on thursday. Told everyone hes healthy and happy. Look out olympics 2032. Lets head over to the table. Comb through the week. Trump, tony nominations and moms. Weve got a great crew assemb assembled. Wesley morris is a critic for the New York Times where he writes about culture, politics, movies, sports. He was compared recently by a colleague to oscar wilde. Seems like a lot to move up to. Hi, willie. Alison stewart has been reporting the news essentially since she left the womb. She famously was a reporter for ncv news. Shes also the author of the new book junk digging through americas love affair with stuff, and most importantly, shes the mom to the great a sick wolfe. He is great. And katy tur correspondent at nbc news as you know. Shes been covering Donald Trumps Campaign Just about every day since he descended the escalator at trump stouer last june. Shell soon be awarded the president ial medal of freedom for her efforts. Good to see you katy. Good to see you. Anybody win any money on the derby . Nyquist . I dont do that. It was the favorite 21, he took the favorite as you did, katy, you didnt win listen, i was watching because donald trump predicted the win and he got it right. Because he always gets everything right. Yes he does. And hes on this thats a nice segue into donald trump. He wins indiana. Calls himself the presumptive nominee. That becomes true when cruz drops out and kasich leaves. Not quite rallying around him yet. Both president s bush 41 and 43 say were not going to the convention. Paul ryan says im not yet ready to endorse. How do we fix this rift in the Republican Party . I think only donald trump can fix that rift and it all is dependent on how he acts onstage at rallies, and how he is able to talk to the folks behind the scenes or make inroads in washington, extend an olive branch. I dont think hes done a lot to do that. I think over the weekend if you were watching any of his rallies he just went on trashing the establishment. Wesley, the lesson i think hes taken away from the last year is he can do things his way. He doesnt have to be conventional and reach out to paul ryan or any of these other people and president s have in the past. No. He can do whatever he wants. There are no apparent repercussions for anything he does. I mean the taco bowl alone, which i guess weve been talking about yes, weve got the picture. Go ahead. Im sorry i cant believe it. Weve been talking about a taco bowl. I mean, whatever i mean its i mean the sort of taco bell branded taco bowl or whatever. But its its its i think its amazing about him. Its like its like in the water gun fight and he brought a paintball gun for the entire thing. And its by his own rules. I wonder if having a bush 41 and 43 and the establishment say we dont want to endorse you, i think his supporters dont care it makes them its better for him in many ways. Somebody asked me what the high point of Donald Trumps campaign was this week and what the low point was. Low point is the taco bowl. The high point is coming out and telling speaker ryan that he doesnt endorse his agenda. Right. And i think that he did that on the night he was in West Virginia and i think that it, it, it is an example of how hes rallying behind the voter, instead of rallying behind the politician. And they take that and they like that hes fighting back and it works for him. Its great fuel. The issue is, i mean hes got the voters behind him but hes got an electoral map thats not friendly number one and number two Hillary Clintons going to run a billion Dollar Campaign and she has all of the benefit of hindsight. You know, she can monday morning quarterback everything that the republicans did wrong, and hes got to get fundraisers on his side. Hes got to get money on his side. And they have to come out with a cohesive plan to go up against her. But as youve watched him, as you reported on him, does he have the discipline to today that . I dont think so. It is worth pointing out, two nominees, bob dole endorsed donald trump. And john mccain said, yeah, okay, i guess ill support the guy. So there is some there is some falling in line. Thats so i cant believe he can do that. When he called john mccain not a war hero. One president who is not falling in line, president obama. Heres what he had to say at his press conference on friday. This is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the United States. Okay, since its derby weekend, lets put the odds at donald trump becoming the next president of the United States. What do you think . Oh, i cant you dont have to set i havent had enough coffee to even get to that. I, i, im supposed to say like 1,000 to 1 or something. I dont know. I honestly dont. You know whats so interesting about this . This question makes people stammer. Makes reporters stammer. Not really sure past anybody if we lose anything this political season predictions are a bad idea. And i think that you can ask me i think its 50 50. Coin toss. Yep, yep, yep. Todays mothers day as everyone here shows. Cheryl sandberg the coo of facebook, she lost her husband about a year ago this time. She posted something on facebook. Shes become a single mother. She frames it by saying look, i know i have resources other people dont. But im realizing what it means to be a single mom. She writes in part the United States is the only developed economy in the world that does not provide paid Maternity Leave. Almost a third of working mothers dont have access to any kind of paid leave to care for themselves or their families if someone gets sick. Instead of providing support we all too often leave the families who are struggling the most to dpend for themselves. The odds are stacked against single mothers in this country. Yet so many give everything they have and go on to raise incredible children. The u. S. Family and medical leave act protects a parents job for up to twelve weeks, but unpaid. Were the only civilized country, allison, in the world that doesnt provide proper Maternity Leave. Theres so much to appreciate about this facebook post. In lean in she talks about men getting in positions of power being able to make significant change. That book starts with sheryl sandberg, hugely pregnant. She has to park all the way across the parking lot and said we need parking for pregnant women, and the guys say, okay. But nobody ever acts. I appreciate her position. I also sort of appreciate that she is acknowledging sort of the sort of for the first time she got a lot of heat in that back about youre sheryl sandberg, the privilege of it. And now she always has empathy as a single mom and using that position to highlight the issues of poverty, associated with not having paid leave. We are in the company wesley only of Papua New Guinea in our Maternity Leave policy. The rest of the western world gives women the time they need with their kids. I think its crazy that this hasnt been settled like a zillion years ago. Yeah. I just i cant believe it. The idea that i mean whats i have a lot of friends to have to strategize like when to have the baby so that you so that the carryover extends into the next calendar year. Right. So i mean thats a whole other state if youre like doing it cycle. When youre thinking about like when should we by the way that is the medical term. The doing it cycle. Thank you for bringing some science to the show. I lived overseas for about a year until donald trump pulled me back. And i know that people over there in europe especially in britain where you can take years off if you want to, essentially, they look at us like we are crazy for a number of reasons. I was going to say specifically the Maternity Leave is extraordinarily high on the list. Because they just think that we dont have any value for families in this country. Right. Or for regular people. Real quick, wesley you write so right about culture. Hampton breaking the record 16 tony nominations. Is it like anything youve seen before . No, its not like anything anybodys ever seen. Its kind of like the trump of musicals. Not in terms of its politics but in terms of its like juggernautness. I dont know. Its a great show. I think it has made people excited about a lot of different aspects of what the theater can do for our generation. My kids were debating who to go as from hamilton for halloween. My daughter had a School Project about the Founding Fathers this week. Went into Parent Teacher conference. She had to draw Thomas Jefferson. She drew him with an afro. With my hair . She thinks Thomas Jefferson its incredible. But theyre asking questions about history. Its amazing what that show has done. 16 nominations. Guys, stick with me. Straight ahead the highs and lows of the week including the airline that somehow got a planeful of people to cheer for crying babies. Were going to explain that. And the guy who at the beyonce concert this week, and read quietly right through the show. Sunday today will be back after a short break and your local weather. Today will be ba after a short break and your local weather. Were seeing some cloudsy skies in San Francisco, a little bit of mist across the golden gate bridge. Weve had a few light showers move from north to south, the north bay seeing mist right now. Skies are beginning to clear. Whats left of the showers should move on around 9 00 and 10 00 this morning letting our skies slowly clear for the afternoon. Numbers in the upper 60s around san jose. Low 60s closer to San Francisco. Upper 60s to near 70 degrees today. Its time to get seriously silly, people. Join red nose day to do some serious good to help fight kids poverty. Its simple just get your red nose, only at walgreens, and get your silly on, seriously. Walgreens. At the corner of happy and healthy. It was all pencil and paper. Started out, the surface pro is very intuitive. With the pressure of my hand i can draw lightly, just like i would
