"today in the bay's" thom jensen reports why people say a crash like this was only a matter of time. >> reporter: the airplane had just taken off when officials say the pilot reported an equipment malfunction and heading back to land. marie's daughter watched it crash as she was talking to her mom on the phone. >> went up, then crash. >> reporter: she is a member of the neighborhood association board, which met last week. visions of this happening, always a topic of discussion at their monthly meeting. >> i'm concerned, number one is that. >> reporter: nbc bay area went through several aircraft crash investigation data bases saying there have been minor incidents there. but the last time it wen down in a neighborhood was 30 years ago. in 1988, a small plane crashed into a store, damaging nine cars. this time, it happened in the middle of a residential neighborhood. >> as bizarre as this was, the outcome is as good as we could expect. >> reporter: officials thankful this ended without more people getting hurt, or killed. >> if it had caught fire, you are executing people that are on fire. thank goodness it didn't. >> that was thom jensen reporting. we are waiting for the update on the pilot. bob redell is working on getting more information. he is going to join us with a live report in a half hour. marcus?
