Dead at a local hospital hours later. Shelly the first six or seven months i was in denial. I knew he was gone, but i just couldnt believe it. It hit me at registration day, school r rgistration day and then just spiraled down. But today as she relived her own loss she learned a 19 year old man had drowned hours earlier at paradise pond. Shelly it just broke my heart because its still happening. the 19 year old and family members had gone to Paradise Park after three in the morning. He reportedly walked out on the ice toward an area stirred by a pump where the ice was weak and had fallen through. When rescuers arrived they found family members on the ice trying to get to him. Winkelman fortunately we were able to get them off the ice with no added injuries or people exposed to that. Its just not worth it. Were well equipped and trained to go do that. The young and daring. And some will tell you once it reaches a certain thickness, its safe. Winkelman there is no formula that can tell you for sure that that ice is going to be safe. Theres too many variables. Wind, currents, melting of snow and refreezing, all that weakens the ice. You can never be sure that that ice is going to be safe. So, the message is stay off the ice and, if you see someone out on the ice call for help and no matter what dont venture out to help them. This ice failed to hold a fully grown man last night. A little over a week ago, the Fire Department rescued a medium sized dog here. It didnt hold his weight either. You can never tell. Ed pearce, kolo 8 news now.
