KPIX KPIX 5 News At 600PM August 17, 2017

Attention, the news Media Attention from fellows like you, is when theres a counterprotest. Reporter with the violent images of charlottesville still fresh in the publics mind, counterprotest organizer Melanie Nathan from marin says its no time to back down. I think its critical for there to be a counter demonstration. If we stayed away, it might be interpreted as a tacit approval which is absolutely could never be. Reporter fear of a violent confrontation as we saw recently in seattle at a patriots prayer demonstration has local leaders calling for the federal government which controls crissy field to reconsider its permit for the demonstration. I have asked the park service if they have seriously evaluated their capacity to ensure the safety of people who would attend such a rally. Reporter the promise of a big opposition turnout and the possible question of violence is also being used as a chip. I see a turnout in force in the mold of a buildup we show that will happen on that day, the more likely it will be that that permit should and will be revoked. Reporter in reaction, the organizer who led similar demonstrations in seattle and portland is doubling down, as well. The people at the top, theyre doing everything they can to hold on to their power. Personally, i would want to confront them directly. Reporter as you can see behind us, a group of protestors is already out trying to drum up support here at crissy field. You can hear the reactions of motorists, as well. So its clear that this debate and this demonstration is going to be news for some time to come. Allen. It will indeed. Phil, the aclu defended the rally in charlottesville. Is it saying anything about the crissy field rally . Its released a statement saying that while they are clear that the position of the First Amendment must be held, it doesnt include or protect people who incite or engage in violence. If they come with the intent of harming people, they are not engaging in protest under the constitution. Its interesting to note that the Patriot Prayer is nonviolent. They dont espouse supremacist views. It will be interesting to see how the aclu, which touts freedom of speech, falls on the issue. Thank you. New at 6 00, in the past 24 hours, we have seen cities across the country and in california remove symbols of our confederate past. But what about changing the name of a Northern California town . The debate comes up from time to time in the small Coastal Community of fort bragg in mendocino county. Kpix 5s Wilson Walker found no one is too worried about honoring a confederate general. Wilson. Reporter well, across the United States of america, there are about 1500 official monuments effectively dedicated to the confederacy. They are as far west as arizona. You will not find one in california. But that brings us to the beautiful coastal town of fort bragg. Is this connected to the confederacy well, that might be a question of degree of separation. Oh, yes. 1857 it gets named fort bragg, um, first camp bragg and then fort bragg. Reporter look around the Fort Bragg History Museum and you wont see much of braxton bragg. Thats because this town was founded by lieutenant Horatio Gates gibson up from the presidio and he decided to name a fort after his Commanding Officer in the mexicanamerican war. Then the mexican war bragg was considered a hero. Reporter so bragg himself never set foot in fort bragg. He was actually retired when the civil war started came out of retirement to be a confederate general and proved to be pretty awful at it, suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of Ulysses Grant at the battle of chattanooga. The killers on your true hits channel skunk thank you for tuning in. We have some great things lining in. Reporter the mayor of fort bragg says this issue comes to town whenever Current Events collide with confederate history. Its always funny because its someone from the outside that brings this issue to us. I think anytime you ask any group to make a change to a name of a school, um, of a athletic team, um, there are a lot of emotions involved. Reporter that east bay assemblyman tony thurman, Assemblywoman Shirley Weber represents san diego. You become immune to these things at some point until someone points it out to you, then you have to assess it. So we are optimistic that cities like fort bragg will eventually have that conversation. The cost of changing all the addresses, all the, you know, all the companies of all the institutions its a nightmare for the post office. Reporter but the mayor says this is more than a matter of practicality. I take umbrage with confederate flag. I take umbrage with statues glorifying what happened in this country in the war between the states. Reporter he says people have revisit this issue many times over the years and while opinions may vary from neighbor to neighbor, fort bragg has made peace with its namesake. The man never set foot in our town. Like said, we have no statues. Were fort bragg because were fort bragg and were proud of it. We dont want anyone from the outside coming in telling us to change our name. Reporter now, i have talked to some locals today. They say that this does come up even sort of among personal conversations among folks oftentimes when new people move into the community.
