Inspirational images of a woman who conquered a mountain. And, Steve Hartman meets a kid with bigleague dreams and not the kind you think. Last night, somebody said, put the kid in this is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. Glor this is our western edition. We are going to begin with a potential path toward peace. President trump said today something very dramatic could happen when he speaks with kim jongun in the coming weeks. He said that hours after the north Korean Leader crossed the border into south korea, something that hadnt happened in 65 years. Margaret brennan begins our coverage. Were not going to be played, okay. Were going to hopefully make a deal. If we dont, thats fine. Reporter President Trump said that unlike his predecessors, he would not be fooled by north korea and would halt its nuclear development. But we will not repeat the mistake of past administrations. Maximum pressure will continue until denuclearization occurs. I look forward to our meeting. Reporter the administration is hoping that meeting between President Trump and kim jongun will happen in the coming weeks. The president said today the location for the summit has been narrowed down to two countries. Mr. Trump would be the First American president to risk a facetoface encounter. This should not have been left for me to handle. Reporter president clinton sent secretary of state Madeleine Albright to meet with kims father. Their agreement was broken during the bush administration. President obamas diplomatic offers were rejected. And previous agreements between the north and south didnt last. This latest diplomatic leap was masterminded by moon jaein, the president of u. S. Ally south korea, who convinced kim to take the first steps across the d. M. Z. In 65 years. The two men even held hands at one point during the 12hour summit, which came after a year of rising tensions that led the Trump Administration to weigh military action. The meeting prompted President Trump to tweet, korean war to end but that is not exactly what happened. Very little was agreed upon. The vast majority of it was aspirational. Reporter Michael Morell is the former Deputy Director of the c. I. A. And cbs Senior National security contributor. Today, north korea said theyd agree to denuclearize. What does that actually mean . For north korea, denuclearization comes at the end of a process. It comes after the end of the korean war, after a peace treaty, after sanctions relief, after normalization of relations with the united states. Denuclearization to us is tomorrow, not ten years from now. Glor margaret joins us now from washington, as does ben tracy from seoul. Margaret, to you first. How much does this summit today, then, raise the stakes for President Trumps meeting with kim jongun . Reporter well, the trumpkim meeting is going to be much more difficult. At this point, kim has not agreed to stop developing nuclear weapons, to shut down his reactors, or even to allow in weapons inspectors to verify what is actually in his arsenal. So he is in a stronger negotiating position than any berth Korean Leader before him. And President Trump will have to enforce any potential agreement. Glor all right, now to ben tracy. Ben, the big question is can south korea trust kim jongun . Reporter well, jeff, as of now, id say theyre giving him the benefit of the doubt. Yes, in the past, north korea has not lived up to some of its agreements, but this summit did seem to feel different than past korean summits. You had a real rapport between these two leaders. They even talked about building trust. Kim jongun said he doesnt want this just to be another agreement that they dont follow through on, and he was also surprisingly candid at times. At one point moon jaein said hes willing to come to north korea as a summit and kim jong un said he better fly because the roads are not in Good Condition in north korea. Thats a pretty stunning admission for the leader of north korea to make, where they really want you to believe everything is perfect. So the South Koreans feel they might be dealing with a different kind of north Korean Leader this time. Jeff. Glor ben tracy, who has been covering the summit all day, and Margaret Brennan in washington. Thank you to both of you. The nationwide e. Coli outbreak from contaminated romaine lettuce is now the worst multi state outbreak in nearly a decade. It has spread to three more states, and has now sickened 19 people in 22 states total. Nobody has died, but nearly half of the patients have gone to the help. Dr. Jon lapook is here with more on all of this. Jon . Reporter it is scary. And the c. D. C. Told us that this strain of e. Coli is especially deadly, and especially nasty. Now, we know that its causing more than the usual number of hospitalizations. Ten people have kidney failure. And we do know that the contaminated lettuce comes from the yuma, arizona region, and they have found one farm that was the source of a small number of cases, but the investigation is ongoing. Glor this area is such a big focus here. What should people do at home right now . Reporter well, the good news is the growing season is switching now from yuma, arizona, to places like california, for the most part. But the c. D. C. Says, unless you are absolutely certain that the lettuce does not come from yuma, arizona, dont eat it. Glor all right, jon lapook, thank you very much. Former nbc nightly news anchor tom brokaw is pushing back against Sexual Misconduct allegations. Brokaw to colleagues compared the accusations to a driveby shooting, saying he was ambushed and perp walked. Anna werner has more on this. I was groped and assaulted by tom brokaw. Reporter in interviews with variety magazine and the Washington Post, former nbc news correspondent linda vester described two unwanted advances from tom brokaw in the mid 1990s, including one in which she says he invited himself into her hotel room. He leans over with his index finger and puts it on my mouth to silence me, and says, this is our compact. And at that point, he took the same hand, reached behind my head and tried to force me to kiss him. Reporter in a letter to colleagues, published by several news organizations today, brokaw pushed back hard, saying vesters allegations were akin to a driveby shooting. I was ambushed and then perp walked, taken to the guillotine and stripped of any honor and achievement i had earned in more than a half century of journalism and citizenship. Brokaw said it was vester who invited him to her New York Hotel room. I should not have gone, he said, but i emphatically did not verbally and physically attack her. Back then, had she reported Something Like this, i dont think anyone would have blinked. I think its a different time. Reporter Washington Post reporter Sarah Ellison says a second, unnamed nbc employee described another incident around the same time. She told the post that brokaw put his hands against her chest, pulled her closer, then invited her later to come to his office. Brokaw told the post, no such incident happened. Neither woman reported the allegations to nbc at the time. These new Sexual Harassment complaints are the latest against highprofile media figures, including former cbs this morning cohost charlie rose, fired by cbs in november. People are afraid to report on people in power. Theyre afraid they wont be believed, and theyre afraid that there will be some kind of retaliation. Reporter the Washington Post also revealed new allegations against former nbc today show host matt lauer. Lauer admitted to acting inappropriately but said he was not coercive, aggressive, or abusive. We could not reach him for comment today. In a note to the staff today, nbc chairman andy lack said nbc takes allegations like those against brokaw very seriously, and said findings from the networks internal review into lauers actions may come out as soon as next week. We tried to reach nbc directly today, but were not able to get them for comment, jeff. Glor all right, anna werner tonight, thank you. Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee today released a 250page report on russian meddling in the 2016 election. Among the conclusions no evidence of collusion, coordination, or conspiracy between the Trump Campaign and the russian government. And that russias intention was to undermine u. S. Democracy, not to help candidate trump. Nancy cordes tells us, democrats on the committee immediately fired back. Nancy . Reporter jeff, its a pretty remarkable end to what was supposed to be a bipartisan, serious investigation. Now, democrats on the committee are saying that the g. O. P. Findings are misleading and unsupported by the facts, releasing their own 98page report in which democrats say that this yearlong congressional investigation actually identified repeated offers of assistance from russians to the Trump Campaign, and a willingness by the campaign to accept that assistance, along with a pattern of deception surrounding those meetings. President trump made it clear today, he favors the republican version. It was a great report. No collusion, which i knew anyway. No coordination, no nothing. Reporter trust between the two sides on this House Committee broke down early, which is why most lawmakers say the senate Intelligence Committee report is the one they are leally looking for. Jeff. Glor nancy cordes on the hill tonight. Nancy, thanks. A new fight erupted in Congress Today over a mysterious firing by the house speaker. Ed okeefe takes a look at this. Those opposed, no. No reporter congress argues all the time about almost everything. Today, it chose to fight about, of all things, the house chaplain. Is it correct that the chaplain is elected by the whole house . Reporter just over ten days ago, father pat conroy abruptly resigned. Conroy said he was forced out by speaker paul ryan. Loving and gracious god. Reporter the 67yearold Catholic Priest has been chaplain since 2011, delivering the morning prayer before each session. In november, he said this, during the debate over tax reform may their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all. Reporter ryan told fellow republicans this morning, conroys ouster had nothing to do with a specific prayer, but rather because he had heard complaints conroy was not meeting lawmakers spiritual needs. I was completely shocked. I was unprepared to learn that he had been fired. Reporter democrat Gerry Connolly is just one of at least 150 members in both parties asking ryan for a better explanation. Republican peter king to be the first house chaplain removed in the history of congress, in the middle of a term, raises serious questions. And i think we deserve more of an explanation of why. Reporter father conroy declined our request for an interview, but told the New York Times that he was never given a formal explanation for his dismissal. Perhaps all of this just a good reminder that politics and religion dont mix, jeff, especially in this town. Glor a very unusual story. Ed okeefe with the reporting tonight. Ed, thanks. There is breaking news tonight in the Stormy Daniels lawsuit against the president and his lawyer, michael cohen. A federal judge in los angeles put the lawsuit on hold for 90 days, saying cohens Constitutional Rights could be endangered if the lawsuit proceeds while hes under criminal investigation. Daniels claims an affair with mr. Trump and is suing to be let out of her nondisclosure agreement. There is fear and anger in a vermont town tonight after a teenager who was arrested the day after the Parkland School massacre for allegedly planning an even bigger attack, walked out of jail today. We first told you about this story last night, and jim axelrod has the followup. Reporter as soon as jack sawyer was released from jail, arrested after detailing the rampage he planned at his former school, vermonts Fair Haven Union high, 30 of the schools 300 kids took off for home in fear. Social studies teacher julia adams tells us its a nightmare at fair haven. We have teachers that are struggling to make it through a whole day teaching. We have kids that are having panic attacks in classes. We have kids whose parents are holding them at home. Reporter in his journal, sawyer listed a dozen specific students and staff he wanted to kill. His bail was reduced when the state Supreme Court ruled planning in vermont doesnt mean attempting, and felony charges were dropped. Sawyer has to report for a psychological exam within 72 hours, but tonight, he is free. The effect that this has had on the High School Overall has been enormous. Its affected every particle of life in fair haven high school. Reporter so now its up to police chief bill humphries and his fourman department to protect this community and its school children. For the rest of their lives, they have to go through the woods knowing theres a wolf chasing them. Reporter jack sawyer still faces two misdemeanors, which could mean up to three years in jail. Reporter handcuffed to a wheelchair, Joseph Deangelo was arraigned on charges for two murders in 1978. He was barely audible answering the judge. Investigators found deangelo using d. N. A. From crime scenes decades ago, which they submitted to a publicly shared genealogy website called gedmatch. Cold case investigator, paul holes we were able to do this without seeking the legal authority, in terms of getting the federal grand jury subpoena or the search warrant that we would need if we wanted to search the other types of genealogy sites. Reporter gedmatch users submit d. N. A. Profiles they buy from sites like ancestry. Com, and 23andme. They plug their data for free into gedmatch, searching for distant relatives. Within days, investigators found distant cousins of the suspected Golden State Killer. We literally went back to the greatgreatgreatgrandfather, with individuals that were born in the early part of the 1800s. Reporter it took four months to identify deangelo as a likely suspect, but to prove it, investigators followed him to collect his d. N. A. From something he threw away. District attorney Anne Marie Schubert it could be he left a tissue. It could be that he put his hands on a door handle, but it was what i call abandoned d. N. A. Reporter that abandoned d. N. A. Solved a 44yearold mystery in four months, but also raises concerns about the privacy of d. N. A. Collection. Isnt it almost certain that a defense attorney is going to call this an illegal search . We would expect
