At least 16 deaths are blamed on the huge and powerful snowstorms that barreled through the northeast. Now comes the unprecedented cold. Temperatures are expected to plunge well below freezing with subzero windchill readings over the next few days across half the nation. Lets go to lonnie quinn from our cbs affiliate lonnie quinn. I want to complain but then you look at boston and realize it could be worse. You bet you. I want to take a look at the whole country, anthony and vinita. Good morning, everybody. Much quieter than yesterday morning. However this little system is going to bring a storm around the thumb of michigan across. The story remains the big blizzard that plagued the northern seaboard. Lets go over there. No more snow out of it. That system is way out around greenland. But on the backside of these systems, thing about it counterclockwise spinning. Youre 19 degrees below zero to start off in bangor new york is 5 degrees. Boston is 3 degrees and now you tack on a little bit of the wind on the backside and youre feeling like 21 in bangor feeling like 17 below in albany 13 below in boston. 3 below for that morning cold feels like temp in new york city. Washington, d. C. , feels like 5 degrees. You did have snow on the front lawn of the white house but the big snow around the boston area picking up 1 to 2 feet of snow. Then you get down to Northern New England to where you picked up 6 inches to a foot and then more as you push south. Whats interesting, its like putting ice into a cooler. It keeps the cold air around it. I will tell you, you warm up a bit for sunday for the eastern seaboard. Its tuesday of next week the temperatures will be colder than they are right now. You go up you go down. And its going back down again bigtime. Anthony . 1 degree when i got in the car this morning and actually thats probably pretty good for the northeast. You bet you. Thanks lonnie. You bet. New england got the brunt of the storm. 2 feet in some places. For more on that lets go to jim smith of our boston station wbztv. Good morning. Reporter good morning, vinita. Thats exactly the case here in Copley Square boston. One giant refrigerator. Lets say freezer. I guess its no surprise not too many people Walking Around considering the temps are around the zero mark. Lets take a look at the video over the last day or so as everybody tried to deal with this gigantic blizzard that hit new england on thursday and friday. Many parts of eastern massachusetts got well over a foot of snow and in some coastal regions it approached 2 feet of snow. All of this accompanied, of course, by absolutely frigid conditions. It made things miserable, lets face it. Heres the Silver Lining because it was so cold. The snow up here was fluffy and light. Number one that makes it easy to shovel. And also it did not weigh down power lines. So this time around we did not have widespread power blackouts. The electricity did not go out unlike last year with nemo when we had hundreds of thousands without power and, of course, without heat. We talk about the coast. And in addition to the high winds and a lot of snow the big problems that the coastal regions here in eastern massachusetts are dealing with is flooding. Very serious flooding at this hour. Thats causing widespread disruptions, of course in peoples lives and property damage. The good news is weve checked with local police and fire officials. We dont know of any dire situations as far as injuries but certainly a number of evacuations. Everybody trying to dig out from this blizzard. Not only that trying to dig out from the really really cold temperatures. Live in boston, im jim smith. Back to you guys. Jim smith of our boston station wbztv. Thank you. The snoel and temperatures are lighting up the light boards at the airports with delays and cancellations. Terrell brown has that part of the story. Reporter anthony and vinita good morning to you. Were at one of the terminals at Laguardia Airport as we wrap up the holiday weekend. This is a line of workers. This lodge line is because of the cancellations that moved through the midwest and northeast. Of course were seeing ripple effects and delays all across the country. Just yesterday alone, more than 6,000 delays across the country. Nearly 6,000 Flights Canceled altogether. Some of the hardest hit, philadelphia, newark and right here where we are, laguardia. We talked to two travels who went through a nightmare of a situation. Joshua burg and his wife. Tried to make it down to florida. They had delay. Then when they took off, they had to land immediately because of a mechanical problem. They had to reschedule. That flight was delayed as well. Its actually my dads wedding in West Palm Beach this weekend. Were looking to get down there and celebrate. Its been a little troublesome. Reporter we talked to josh yesterday. He ended up making his flight out of town. A lost the airlines are waiving the change fees and theyre encouraging people to head to the airport early. These are lucky enough to get out of here but some are saying theyre not going to get out of town until sometime next week. President obama has avoided the bad weather ripping part of the nation. He and the first family are due back to the white house today after vacationing in hawaii. Meanwhile hes urging Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor. Jeff pegues is in our Washington Bureau with the latest. Good morning. Good morning, vinita and anthony. Were still waiting on a decision on this case. On friday the Obama Administration asked the Supreme Court not to block the Affordable Health cares coverage regarding contraception saying the religious affiliates can already opt out of it. It was argued against the injunction. The governments filing was a direct response against a legal action by the none nuns of the poor. On chrome eve Justice Sotomayor agreed. The court will decide whether to extend the injunction or she may refer it hers. On friday the solicitor general said organizations like the Little Sisters of the poor can already certified theyre exempt of any requirement. But Daniel Beckett says that compromise still goes against their morals. What youre telling us we dont have to provide the drugs ourselves but we have to order someone else to. Thats not good enough. Youre still requiring us to do something we think is wrong. Its part pof the lawsuit that required insurance plans make contraceptive coverage available. Affordable care act is the main story on face the nation tomorrow morning. The ruling calls for jahi mcmaths mother to assume full responsibility for her daughter. Mcmath has been on a ventilator for the past month ever since having tonsil surgery. The family and hospital have been at odds if and how she will be transferred. The hospital will not be assisting with the transfer. Bob dylan said we owe them everything. They started it all. Hes talking about the Everly Brothers. Phil everly died yesterday. Phil everly was a teenager when he and his older brother don made their tell vilgsevision debut byebye love byebye happiness byebye lopeliness byebye loneliness they scored 27 billboard hits at the height of their popularity in the 1950s and 1960 ts. Their exquisite harmony inspired the beach boys, linda ron stand and others. Here are the Everly Brothers. Ive been lied to when will i be loved the brothers went through difficult times and didnt speak for a number of years that is until another famous duo brought them back together as the opening act for their world tour. The everly lyly lylyies are our heroes and its an honor to introduce you to don and phil. The Everly Brothers left an indell aboutable mark on the music industry. Its no surprise they were among the first of ten performers to be inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame. Bill everly was 74. A heart condition is why he died. Its amazing the influence he had. The beatles billed themselves as the british Everly Brothers. I was talking with norm crosby they wanted to be the Everly Brothers. They ended up being crosby stills and nash. The amount of love on twitter is incredible. Well the passengers rescued from the russian ship stuck in the Antarctic Ice are back on dry land after a brief stop for a possible second mission. The chi need ship that launched the helicopter that rescued the group is now forced to stay longer than plant. Mark phillips is in our London Bureau with the developments. Good morning. Good morning, vinita and anthony. Theyre on their way to dried land but in the most roundabout route imagined. Nothing has been normal about this rescue. Now some of the rescuers themselves are stuck. The 52 tourists in search of adventure had more than they might have wanted. When the russian ice breaker on which they had begun their adventure got stuck in the antarctic pack ice and the chinese ice breaker also got locked in help seemed to be at hand by an australiaen ship also in the area. They got a helicopter to rescue then. The australian ship which had been on a resupply mission to an strain base in the aunt art tick has to complete its mission before heads to dry land. It may be there for a couple of weeks more. Its able to make way through the ice that unseasonable winds have brought in. The crews of the chinese and russian ships are staying on board their vessels. The boats are stuck but not currently in danger. Theyre waiting for a wind shift that will hopefully loosen the grip of the ice and push through to allow them to go into open water. Thats the hope anyway. The ship they delightfully named snow dragon they thought would ship today. Record cold temperatures could also be a key factor when the nfls wild card weekend kicks off. There are four pivotal games. Two today, two more tomorrow. Here with a wild card preview and predictions, New York Times Columnist Bill rhoden. Good morning. How much of an impact do you think the weather will play . This is green bay. How much of it is football weather. Its really inhuman. 30 below zero. I dont know how they snap the ball. People like us were in the press box Drinking Coffee saying youve got to be kidding. Lets talk about the chiefs. A lot of people are wondering how theyll perform. I think the whole playoffs are a referendum on quarterbacks period. I like andy reid death of a son, that kind of stuff. I think its really but if andrew luck is the quarterback that we think he is and everybody is saying he is indianapolis is supposed to win this game. They blew him out at home in kansas city. I love andy reid but the great thing about sports, at the end of the day you have to do it. The eagles are home against the saints. This is particularly interesting because the quarterback nick foles grew up admiring drew brees. Well see what happens at the end of the game. Again, its been a nice fairy tale ride for nick foles. The new Orleans Saints are a completely Different Team when theyre on the road, a completely Different Team. But i think they may win this game. re 06 in mayoff games on the road, but i think that they will win this game. Again, if drew brees is who we think he is, theyre going to find a way to go into philadelphia. This is the first time. Chip kelly, you know has been a nice run and all that, you know but he didnt win a National Championship in college either. Whoever won, theyre proud. Lets talk about the chargers lets talk about the charger at the bengals. The chargers shouldnt even be in the playoffs. Theyre okay. They barely beat a Kansas City Team that rested all their starters, which is another issue for another day, this whole idea of resting starters. The chargers are an okay team. I like marvin lewis. Hes been at it a long time. You know and fortunately the fans sucked it up and bought tickets so they wont be blanked out. Quickly, back to green bay and playing the 49ers in minus 30 degree windchill. What do you see there . Its unbelievable. I like San Francisco in that. Again, aaron rodgers, great performance against chicago. Thats more because of chicago. So i like San Francisco. Bill thanks so much for being with us. We appreciate it. Its going to be an interesting weekend. You can catch the game sunday at 1 00 p. M. Eastern right here on cbs. It is time to show you some of this mornings headlines.
