Which would threaten the security and privacy of their customers phones. The company is appealing the judges ruling. Pam our tech trends reporter gabe slate joins us now what the f b i is asking of apple. Gabe so the fbi is not technically asking apple to unlock the phone the terrorists phone they have is locked with a pin code on the home screen. Gabe they cant get around that. There is a security setting in iphones when activated that do this. Gabe if you punch in the wrong pin code 10 times it automatically wipes the phone and all the data is gone. The fbi is asking apple to create software or firmware that will turn off that fbi can have unlimited guesses with the pin code. Gabe create it doesnt exist now. So they would be working for the fbi to creat this. Gabe there are over 10,000 possibilities the pin code could be so they are also asking apple to create software that would help them quickly go through all 10,000 posibilities so they can open the phone. Gabe heres more of apples response to this. Gabe gabe apples ceo tim cook wrote an open letter and published it on their website about this issue. In the letter he said gabe the Us Government has asked us for something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create, they have asked us to build a backdoor to the iphone. Gabe cook warned, once created, the technique could be used physical world, it would be the equivalent of a master key, capable of opening hundreds of millions of locks gabe this is setting the stage for a highstakes legal fight between Silicon Valley and the federal government. This will bounce around appeal courts for now gabe and could potentially end up at the Supreme Court federal Law Enforcement and leading Technology Companies have long been at an impasse about how to balance Digital Privacy for consumers against the responsibility of federal agents and police to investigate crimes or terrorism. Gabe you and me. Regular iphone users gabe well. If apple loses this battle it could mean anyone with iphones could be at risk of Law Enforcement being able to unlock their phone. Gabe one other thing to mention here. The iphone in question belonged to the county. It was his work phone gabe the county gave it to the fbi and gave them permission to do whatever they wanted with it. If this was the terrorists even be talking about this today. Gabe i think thats worth pointing out. If you have a work phone. Your work could give it to the fbi to open it up. Reporter others are worried about the pandoras box that this will open. Reporter 07 when has a cell phone bridge and many support the refusal to help the government. This is unfortunate. But imax apple person provide a total and protection of the users rights. Reporter are lured about the president that this will set if they agree to the judges order prepared. , it will continue. Where does it stop . We needed for this situation.
