Led to vandalism to downtown businesses and an injury to one person who was hit by a car as demonstrators attempted to block highway 24. And today those business are left with picking up the pieces. Kron4s Haaziq Madyun was in oakland today as shop owners repaired the damage done to their businesses sheets of plywood are being used to board up shattered windows following last nights president ial election protest here in downtown oakland. This was the scene tuesday night here on broadway they were going crazy, breaking stuff, glass everywhere they had garbage cans right here set on fire some businesses are using boards to cover the damage. Others are boarding up in prepartion for the next protest. Meanwhile folks downtown have mixed feelings about the destrcution that took place i dont understand every time something doesnt go their way, be it vote, or whichever way it turns out, why they have to go around and just destroy property . It doesnt make any sense to me. Its not going to solve anything im not saying that is something that i would do but i understand why people are having reactions, i mean there were protests at berkeley, san jose state, everywhere well if they voted i guess they have every right to express themselves but if youre going to protest and you didnt get out and vote, im going to tell you to sit down Oakland Police say around 250 protestors marched through downtown. Bay area voters approved measures to tax soda and other sugary drinks in San Francisco, oakland and albany. It means a penny an ounce tax on sweetened drinks. The tax will not apply to diet sodas or naturally sweetened drinks. Supporters argued it will help curb Health Problems like diabetes. Californians approved the measure to raise taxes on cigarettes by 2dollars a pack and put new taxes on e cigarettes. It adds two dollars to the current 87centsapack tax. Its the first increase in state tobacco taxes since 1998. California also joins only about a half dozen states that tax e cigarettes and vapor products. Also approved measure rr. The bart bond issue. It was on the ballot in alameda, Contra Costa County and San Francisco. It means 3point5 billion dollars in bonds to repair and replace aging tracks, tunnels and train systems. Voters defeated prop 62 a measure to repeal the state Death Penalty. It would have replaced executions with life in prison. California has the nations biggest death row but has executed only 13 prisoners since the Death Penalty was enacted. A rival measure was passed that would try to speed up executions. And voters have expanded some of the nations toughest gun control measures. Prop 63 bans largecapacity ammunition magazines. And requires background checks for ammunition sales. It would also speed up the process for taking away guns from people no longer allowed to own them. Steve and vicki . In San Francisco a measure that would ban tents on sidewalks looks like its going to pass. Prop q bans encampments. And authorizes city officials to remove them after a 24hour notice. The measure requires the city to offer a shelter bed or other types of housing to those displaced. But homeless advocates say the measure is an empty one. Since the tents are already illegal and there arent enough beds in San Francisco shelters. We reached out to San Francisco supervisor mark farrell who sponsored prop q. He did not get back to us. Voters have cracked down on fracking and new oilwell drilling. In Monterey County. Yesterday. Voters adopted a ballot measure to phase out new oil drilling and ban fracking. Oil companies raised more than 5milliondollars against the measure. Bernie sanders and actor Leonardo Dicaprio were among some campaigning for the ban. Monterey county is the states fourthlargest oilproducing county. Now. Its the seventh county in the state to ban fracking. And the bay area led the pack on the ban. Back in july. Alameda county became the first to outlaw fracking. Sot this is a historical moment and its a very difficult moment for our community. While some Staff Members stayed behind, supervising the students who chose not to march pasarow and several teachers monitored the students who joined the protest encouraging them to express themselves without fear of being reprimanded for skipping class.
