It happened near san diego after a firefighter summer games competition as ktvu james torres reports, its not the first tragedy for the victims family. I knew that i wanted to be an oakland firefighter because of my dad four years ago, ktvu told kaden lafons story. He became a firefighter in oakland to serve with his dad, shawn laffan. The interim assistant fire chief. He died four years ago after a heart attack. I didnt think that would be the last time id see my dad. The laughing family is having those same thoughts this morning. San diego lifeguards report kaden and friends went out into the water after a night out on the town, so we took to the search for a couple hours, with our boat rescue boat, land units, coast guard helicopter, were unable to locate them and then were doing our final last patrols on the shoreline, and our lifeguard sergeant spotted him. He had washed into the beach just on the north side of the pier. Cadens mother, who lost her husband four years ago, had the tough job of confirming her sons identity. The san diego fire chief had the job of contacting the oakland Fire Department. It was a very difficult call to the chief covington up there in oakland, all firefighters are part of our family. It doesnt matter what agency they work for. And so i know what hes going through. I know what all his members are going through. Weve lived through that very difficult times. Fire crews remain on scene of that smoldering building. They plan to remain there all day to put out hot spots. That fire broke out just after ten last night at Pacific Supply company on 24th and wood. Whats still unclear this noon is how it started. Ktvu ali rasmus shows us the intense flames and the mess it left behind. More than ten hours after the fire at the Pacific Supply warehouse in west oakland broke out, firefighters kept a steady stream of water directed at the building. The fire that started at 10 00 last night near 24th and wood burned. So hot and the flames and smoke so intense, firefighters had to ask east bay mud to boost the water pressure to tackle it. We had a full roof collapse and its a metal roof, so underneath the roof is actually roofing material because its a roofing material. Supply warehouse. Representatives from Pacific Supply declined to speak with us on camera, but work with firefighters this morning on a plan to bring in heavy equipment to the site. Theyre trying to remove parts of the metal roof that collapsed. Well probably be here all day. Were looking to get maybe excavation equipment out here just to move some of the roofing material around the metal roof, around, so that we can get some of the deep seated fires. How this fire began is under investigation, but it started outside the building and spread inside before consuming the warehouse. No one was hurt and the fire did not spread to any other buildings. By late morning, Oakland Public Works crews were brought in to help drain nearby roads. So much water was directed at the fire. Over a ten hour period, the streets looked like lagoons. The Flammable Materials trapped underneath the buildings roof continued to smolder well into the morning, sending regular plumes of dark smoke into the air. Roadway flooding and street closures in the area around this warehouse will continue to be a problem for much of the day. Also, a smoke from this fire continues to be a problem, and so firefighters recommend that if you live near 24th and wood in the neighborhoods around here, you should keep your windows closed to avoid some of that smoke in oakland. Ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. New at noon the National Transportation safety board is sanctioning boeing for sharing private information. The first president ial debate is now just hours away. But even before the candidates take the stage tonight, the campaigns are hitting the airwaves. Its going to be hot outside the debate here in atlanta, and it may be even hotter inside on the stage and ahead of the big event, the Biden Campaign announcing a multimillion dollar ad blitz across battleground states, including billboards like this one highlighting project 2025, warning voters about what they call the plan by Donald Trumps maga republican allies to give trump more power over your daily life. The Trump Campaign firing back with their first tv spot since the former president became the Presumptive Republican nominee. One of the ads is a tongue in cheek montage of President Bidens physical stumbles, but the other highlights the Biden Administrations record on the economy. A message that may be connecting with some swing state voters. Seeing someone stand up to the establishment, i have no choice but to admire that. But even folks whose minds are made up plan on tuning in, and its not going to influence my vote. But, you know, its entertainment. Tonights debate comes as the race remains a virtual tie. Prolife protesters on the steps of the Supreme Court letting the justices know theyre not happy with the courts decision to throw out a case that pitted a federal law to perform emergency abortions against idahos neartotal ban. They try to muddy the issue and confuse people by thinking, you know, that we dont want to give health care to women. That is not true. In a one sentence statement, the Court Dismissed the case. We got a sneak peek wednesday when a draft opinion was mistakenly posted briefly on the courts website. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote to many aspects of the case have changed and rendered the scope of the dispute unclear at best. Its hard to feign surprise with the fact that this opinion came out last night by mistake. It was the ultimate off ramp. Some hospitals in idaho were sending women with pregnancy complications out of state, because some doctors fear theyll Face Criminal Charges if they perform an abortion. In the wake of the states neartotal ban after six weeks, the Biden Administration argued federal law requires doctors to give stabilizing treatment in medical emergencies, including abortions and democrats in congress say theyll do their part. We will not rest until reproductive freedom is the law of the land for every single woman in the United States of america, President Biden is sure to make the abortion issue front and center at tonights debate. But theres also another Supreme Court decision looming that could change the course of this election. Whether former President Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for actions he took while in office. That ruling could come out friday. Its going to be a heck of a day. Its basically roberts has decided to hold the world cup, world series and the super bowl.
