But not everyone is cheering his visit. [ chanting ] reporter many from the Sikh Community gathered for a thumbs down protest outside facebook, which hosted a town hall meeting this morning with the Prime Minister. We have objection to the Prime Minister, the indian system, which has inherent dna of killing the religious minority. Reporter the protests were countered by promoti chants across the street. Our camera caught a glimpse of his car as he left. He is concentrating on technology and the national issues. Reporter tech, Renewable Energy and the environment were topics discussed this afternoon, as the Prime Minister and governor jerry brown met in san jose. From meeting with the states top official to an audience of everyday people. Its been a full day in the south bay. Reporter security is tight here. There is an area cordoned off behind me for protesters. People were demonstrating for religious freedom, also people carrying signs that were protesting Police Brutality in india. Heather, its unclear whether or not the Prime Minister will see protesters when he comes in. Really depends which way they bring him to the sap center. It happened at the carmel minimum stare where he is buried. Vandals struck during the night, damaging the statue. Elevating father serra to sainthood last week sparked protests across the United States, including close to carmel nation, where the native americans oppose serras canonization because they say many atrocities were committed against ancestors when he was a missionary. Pope francis is headed back to the vatican, after taking part in the world meeting of families in philadelphia. There, the pontiff drew a crowd three times the size of woodstock. There will be a Lunar Eclipse shortly after 7 00 in whats called a supermoon. The full eclipse happens at 7 11 tonight, the first time in 32 years weve had a supermoon and a Lunar Eclipse at the same time. To see it, you got to look to the east. Lets head out to ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo for more on this rare lunar event. After tonight, next time it happens is the year 2033. If youve been looking outside out toward the sky, you probably noticed high clouds. Well be tracking those. Once again, here is the total Lunar Eclipse during the 7 00 hour. The moon passing through the earths shadow will create that reddish tint to the moon. In fact, heres a closer look at that. 14 larger, over 30 brighter. As far as the time line, begins totality, total Lunar Eclipse at 7 00, 7 11 to 8 23 this evening. The closest. To the earth when youre looking to the moon, over 221,000 miles away. The biggest challenge for us, the cloud cover. Heres a look at the satellite. Earlier today we had lots of clouds over a good portion of the bay area. This is a satellite loop. Notice this, the main cloud band, in fact, drifting to the south, basically drifting this direction. That is excellent news for us. Heres a closer look at some of the overcast conditions right now, focused in the southern third of the bay area, closer to the south bay. Then up in the north bay, we have clearing skies up toward santa rosa, napa, even parts of San Francisco we do have partly cloudy skies. A few cameras are lined up to show you. Here is our san rafael camera with a few high clouds way up in the topper top portion of the screen there. We do have fair skies in this region. San francisco, taking a look toward the bay, lots of overcast this afternoon, but the clouds beginning to break apart. Were talking about the clouds in the south bay and heres our camera in san jose, where we still have lingering clouds in this region that could be somewhat of a challenge to watch the eclipse for this evening. Hopefully clouds continue to move out of the south as they have been doing over the past few hours. Well continue to keep an eye on sky conditions. Two people were injured this weekend when a pg e transformer exploded in San Francisco. It happened last night in burnell heights at the intersection of wool street and eugene yeah avenue. Crews were working on equipment when the transformer suddenly exploded. Two men nearby were injured, treated for burns at San Francisco general hospital. Its unclear what caused the explosion. Power was knocked out to 4000 customers, but quickly restored. An antioch teenager is facing criminal charges after allegedly leading police on a chase through the east bay. Danville Police Spotted a stolen vehicle near camino and old blackhawk road around 8 30 last night. When they attempted to pull over the driver, officers say he took off, heading towards orinda. He and his two passengers were eventually taken into custody after police say they got out of the vehicle and started running. The driver was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle, reckless evasion, and resisting arrest. Both of his passengers were released to their parents. There are signs that life is slowly getting back to normal for those affected by the devastating valley fire. School district Officials Say classes at middletown schools will be in session starting tomorrow. District Officials Say all of the Elementary Schools survived without serious damage and the only school that had a major loss was la conoma valley high school. Calfire says its getting closer to containment, complete containment of the flames. The valley fire is now 95 contained. Officials say if the weather continues to cooperate, this fire should be fully contained in about a week. So far, the fire has burned more than 76,000 acres and nearly 2000 structures. The Bay Area Muslim Community held its annual blood drive today to honor the victims of 9 11. Muslims for life teamed up with Blood Centers of the pacific to collect donations. This is all part of a nationwide campaign to collect more than 40,000 units of blood over a twomonth period. Organizers say they hold these drives to remember all of the victims of 9 11 and for the good of all mankind. We want to make sure people continue to understand that were muslims, we live in the United States and were here to give back to the community. We want to be citizens of the world in whatever way we can. Muslims for life is close to reaching its collection goal for this year. The nationwide blood drive wraps up on october 11. Coming up, sad news to report. A fifth victim has died from that deadly duck boat crash in seattle. Also, the revelations today by federal investigators about the maintenance history of that amphibious vehicle. Outgoing House Speaker john boehner didnt mince words today on his departure and the current climate among congressional republicans. A fifth victim has died following the crash last week in seattle involving a duck boat and a tour bus. Authorities didnt release her name, but said she was a 20 yearold woman. Also today, federal investigators said the duck boat did not have axle repairs that were recommended back in 2013. The ntsb says the front left axle of the amphibious vehicle was sheared off. Its unclear if that happened in the crash or before. President obama delivered a speech today at the United Nations during a summit of World Leaders. During his address, the president called on his global counterparts to commit more resources to end poverty and improve public health. The president spoke about the progress being made combating the ebola crisis in africa and advancement in treating aids, but he reminded World Leaders of the billions of people still suffering in poverty and the daunting challenges ahead. Its relationship between russia and the United States has been tense ever since russia took over crimea and placed russian backed forces in eastern ukraine. This will be the first faceto face meeting of the two leaders in almost a year. Fallout continues in washington today following that surprise announcement by House Speaker john boehner that hes stepping down from his leader post and resigning from congress. Here is more on what prompted boehners decision and the race to replace him. Reporter apart from who the next speaker will be, one of the Big Questions now is will this resignation actually fix anything . A divided Republican House . In the shortterm, boehner said he thinks hell have a little more cooperation from some others around town, an apparent reference to the group of conservative members who were trying to force him out, meaning a shortterm budget compromise is more likely to pass in the next few days before a partial Government Shutdown would occur. Boehner didnt mince words, though, when talking about the uncompromising demands of the conservative wing of the party. Absolutely. They are run realistic. Weve got groups here in town, members of the house and senate here in town who whip people into a frenzy believing they can accomplish things that they know, they know are never going to happen. Reporter the problem is a majority of republican primary voters arent pleased with what republicans in congress have been doing. According to the most recent fox news poll, 66 say the republican majorities in congress have failed to do all they could do block a or reverse president obamas agenda. The current replacement is believed to be kevin mccarthy. Though after essentially outing the current speaker, conservative members say they will have a big say in that decision. I wouldnt say this is a giveaway for kevin mccarthy. Kevin mccarthy is a great guy, but theres a lot of other people that are vying to run. And our job in congress is to vet those people so that we get people that are principled in the way that they want to legislate and not be on a power structure the way it has been in the past. Reporter an absolute majority is required to elect a new speaker, meaning the magic number of votes that a candidate must get is 218. And with just 246 republicans in the house, reaching that number will be a hurdle for any candidate. In washington, im garrett tenney, fox news. Uniquely San Francisco event wrapped up this weekend. The folsom street fair is the Worlds Largest leather and fetish fair. The event attracts 400,000 people each year. Many came out in costume, while others wear next to nothing. Across the bay in oakland today, huge crowds turned out for the bay area vibez music and arts festival, bringing together the best of reggae, hiphop and electronic music, including a 25act lineup playing on three different stages. That included bob marley sons damian stephens. Good weather to be outside, either in folsom wearing nothing or in oakland dressed up yeah, one or the other. Of course were all looking up to see the moon out there. Always feel the pressure. I was looking last time this happened, the supermoon and Lunar Eclipse, 1982, i believe. Then the next time will be 2033. So we got to get it right tonight. Right now, we have been tracking high clouds out there. The high clouds, thankfully have been drifting to the south. Right now, the main focus has been in the south bay. Temperatures from this afternoon ranging from the 60s toward pacifica and San Francisco. Lots of 70s out there in the warmest locations inland. Still lower 90s toward livermore and fairfield. On the satellite, you can see the high clouds. Earlier this afternoon we had lots of overcast over a good portion of the bay area, but they have been drifting to the south. So the clouds basically heading in this direction, heading to the south and to the east. Right now, the main focus of the overcast is really down toward the south bay. In fact, heres a closer look toward santa cruz, san jose, morgan hill, gilroy. To the north of this, clouds have actually been clearing out. We have fair skies toward santa rosa, some patchy fog near the marin headlands, point reyes as well. Temperatures right now, showing you 80s for antioch and livermore. San jose checking in at 74. San francisco, in the 60s. Heres our live camera looking toward the bay. Fair skies here, probably an hour and a half ago we had mostly cloudy skies, at least the thin layer of high clouds up above this region.
