The first thing we want to do when we get to a fire is see if theres any rescues. We always want to save lives. The scene was chaotic as people as the building was going up in flames. People had tied sheets together and they were trying to make a rope to literally climb down on a sheet. This is what they trained for. We pull the fire escape down and tied it off. We went to the second of third floor. The first was a lady. She reached out and i pulled her over the railing. The next was a gentleman that also reached out and i pulled him. They rescued seven people. All lives were not spared. For people did die in the fire. You want to save everybody. Its upsetting when you cant do that. Its a tragedy. We do everything in our power to save as many people as we can. They save the lives of more than 20 people that they. Knowing that some people did make it out alive. With these firefighters forever. You had a loss of life but you look at how many people can see another day. Nothing special about it. We are nothing more than an usher. An usher for life. They were a very humble group. They lean on each other for support. One of the guys we spoke with today has only been with the callawith them for six months. What did you learn about firefighters that maybe you didnt know before . More than seven people were saying in the shelter immediately following last weeks fire. That number has dropped to 11 p. That number has dropped to 11 po. The shelter was only a temporary solution. Officials say they are working to find longerterm housing for people who were still at that shelter. A lick candle was to blame for sparking the fire. Weve uncovered new information about that apartment building. The nonprofit this helping the displaced tenants. Kandis when learns the organization the Community Center has a history of its own issues. The nonprofit at the center of the deadly oakland fire has two other locations. One is on international boulevard and the other is in stockton. According to public records the Community Center had a history of Code Enforcement complaints of violations. At the international boulevard location records show its been plagued with problems. Complaints about dirty carpets, roaches and illegal units in the basement. These complaints go back 10 years. Those the most recent violation was issued in january for storage areas used for habitable space. At the stockton property the city says that has about nine complaints. There is an active case right now involving problems with plumbing and windows. Enforcement officials would not elaborate. On its website they say they help provide Mental Health for homeless and veteran services. It appears the nonprofit hasnt filed a tax return since 2013 according to the irs.
