Im dave clark. Lets check your labor day forecast. Steves off. But rosemary is here. Today, a lot like yesterday, which means it could feel muggy in your neighborhood. You may look up at the sky and think, it kind of looks like its going to rain. For some some brief showers in the forecast. Were tracking a few this morning. Im tracking a few cells here. You can see just north of the san mateo bridge in the bay here. For the afternoon, this batch of moisture will continue with us. Its going to bring that possibility of a few sprinkles. It really shouldnt ruin your outdoor plans. Were talking hit or miss. 65 in concord. 63 in napa. 62 San Francisco. 64 in areas around novato. 67 in mountain view. Feeling a little muggy already this morning with relatively mild temperatures. As we get into the noontime, temperatures will again warm very similar to what we had yesterday. A few upper 70s to low 80s for other warmest locations. Around the bay, widespread 70s. 60s at the coastline and then for the second half of the day, 60s at the coast, 70s along the peninsula. Upper 70s to low 80s as you get into redwood city into san jose. For the east shore line, upper 60s to lower 70s. Temperatures feeling like sunday. And again, the possibility of maybe a few scattered showers. The new eastern span of the bay bridge is due to open in 22 hours. Crews need to install a few more things. They are doing that as we speak. For now, though, the bay bridge is still closed. Probably the busiest days were thursday and friday. 880 looks good if you want to get out there earlier and drive to the san mateo bridge where traffic is doing well. Traffic looks good on the san mateo bridge. Yesterday, we had quite a day on the san mateo bridge especially on the approaches from hayward and driving to the 92 and 880 interchange. We have a crash, northbound 280 at monterey. One car overturned. The San Francisco Fire Department is on the scene. Now, traffic is pretty light. Theres not a huge traffic jam but theres a momentum slowdown near monterey boulevard. 7 04 back to the desk. Actually, im gonna toss it to tara. Tara, im sorry i forgot about you. Whats it like out there . Reporter well, there was this sense of excitement the first couple of days we were out here. It was very noisy. They were hauling debris. Most of that work has been completed. Crews are kind of tired. Dont forget. Theyve been out here round the clock. Officials have said this bridge should be open by 5 00 in the morning. But theres a chance it could open earlier. Everything is on schedule. The scurve is gone. The approach is smooth and straight and inside the tunnel, new l. E. D. Lights and fresh paint. Demolition is done to make way for the bike path. Crews are wrapping up paving and striping. The chp says it has a plan in place once the bridge opens. Caltrans will tell us the bridge is clear and ready to open and ready for traffic. At that point, well stop traffic on the feeder roads. The caltrans crews will pick up the phones. It wont be one or two cars going as fast as they can. And then well guide the cars across the bridge. Reporter the chp is in maximum enforcement code. They say expect congestion around the bridges later today. Last night traffic on the golden gate was slow. The other bridges were fine. The Holiday Weekend is helping us out trafficwise. All right. 3 00 this afternoon, a chain cutting ceremony will be held celebrating the new eastern span of the bay bridge. It begins with speeches from several people including San Francisco mayor, ed lee and lieutenantgovernor gavin newsom. After the chaincutting there will be a procession over the bridge of antique cars. That should be quite a thing to see. Click on the bay bridge closure tab. Its right there at the top of our home page. A sad start to labor day this morning in the south bay. Two women are dead after being involved in a car crash. Its turned into a criminal investigation. Ktvu channel 2 reporter, janine de la vega joins us from the scene to tell us who police are looking for. Reporter well, pam, the driver who may have caused this accident is on the run. Thats why police have blocked off the road near first and skyport near the airport. Take a look at this accident. Police say the two cars hit headon, one went into the pole. The other car is completely crushed. You can see what looks like a bumper and stuff. The body of the passenger is still inside. Police have blocked off the lanes near north first near skyport, except for one lane to investigate the accident that happened around 3 20 a. M. When emergency crews arrived, they found the silver mercedes crashed in the pole. Nobody was inside. The driver ran away. There were two women trapped in the toyota. Firefighters used the jaws of life to free the driver and took her to the hospital where she later died. The passenger died while still inside the car. Those who heard the crash describe it. You cant even make out the secondary vehicle. I dont even know what that is. Its mangled and twisted. Unfortunately, its one of the tragic things that happen here in san jose. Reporter police say there was at least one witness who may have seen something. Officers have interviewed that person. They want to track down the driver of the mercedes through the registration. They are checking with hospitals to see if anybody walked in with injuries consistent with a car crash. Its unknown if alcohol played a factor in this accident. And back out here live, again, the northbound lanes of first street actually are back open up now. But skyport from skyport near technology, thats closed off because the Accident Investigation Team is still gathering evidence. They are still waiting for the coroner to arrive. Many bay area airports and freeways will be busy with people heading home from the weekend. The chp plans to be out on the roads in full force cracking down on speeding drivers, those not wearing seat belts and drunk drivers. The extra enforcement began on friday. It ends before midnight tonight. Last year, 35 people were killed on california roads during the Labor Day Holiday. Half of them were not wearing their seat belts. 7 09. We have new information from Oakland Police who are offering a 10,000 reward for information about a deadly weekend shooting. A 48yearold man was killed saturday night outside an Apartment Building on daisy street just a few blocks from the Mills College campus. Police say he went there to meet a friend when he got into an argument with another man and was shot. He later died at the hospital. So far, police dont have any information about the suspect, the investigation continues. 7 09. We have more coverage of the rim fire still burning in and around Yosemite National park. Its burned 228,000 acres since august 17th. Its now 60 contained. It may keep burning, though, for a few more weeks before they knock it down. 4500 homes are threatened. Its the fourth biggest fire in california history. The smoke from the fire is causing major air quality pr lems in the sierras. The worst smoke is expected in alpine and northern mono counties. If you have breathing problems, reduce your outdoor activity. Officials recommend you shut your windows, turn on the air conditioning and make sure you drink a lot of water. Stay hydrated. Many Tuolumne County about businesses are saying businesses are saying thank you to the firefighters by giving them free meals and donations. Signs have gone up praising the firefighters and Police Officers out there fighting the flames. Several veteran firefighters say theyve never been treated as warmly as they have been in Tuolumne County. Well, san jose has been named the happiest and healthiest city in the country. The magazine praised the farmers markets, community gardens. San francisco came in number 7 for its cultural offering and the fact you can walk around many neighborhoods. Many of the members have returned to washington already for a series of briefings from the white house. Now, white house aides and the president himself are flooding the zone. They are hur ridley making calls and reaching out to members lobbying for a strike. Graham and mccain, these are two powerful senators on the committee. They will meet with president obama today. On tuesday, the president will meet with chairs and ranking levels from key committees. Lawmakers are divided. Some dont think the u. S. Should intervene at all. Others say the plan is way too proud and would like to see it narrowed down significantly before they give authorization. Theres no consensus on capitol hill and eadzed on both sides of the aisle say if a vote were held today, they would not get the votes needed. Back to you. The New York Times is reporting that Law Enforcement officials working on a Counter Narcotics Program have had access to a huge at t database that contains the records of decades of americans phone calls. Centers for disease control, point out thousands of American Adults die every year from the flu. Last year, 160 children died from the flu here in the United States. An outbreak of valley fever is forcing hundreds of inmates to be moved out of the prison to the Central Valley.
