The fda said that all Blood Centers should have testing in place within three months, but that california is on a list of states given an earlier deadline to Start Testing within one month. The battle to contain the zika virus is expanding to protect the blood supply. They announced new guidelines for the blood banks nationwide. We are recommending the testing throughout the United States and their territories. That we will be taking this step to further enhance their safety of the blood supply. Reporter the fda said that california is one of 11 high risk states that should test all donated blood units for the zika virus. Most of those states are close to florida or mexico where zika has been spread by mosquitoes. Some also have zika cases related to travel or sexual transmissions. California has 170 such cases. Doctors say that the concern is that blood donors might be carrying the zika virus without knowing it. About 80 of people who are infected with zika will never develop any systems. Which is a reasoning why it is a risk to the blood. Reporter at the bay areas blood center of pacifics, theyve been asking donors to travel to zikarisked zones or a special contact with someone who has traveled in those areas. They also start add zika testing they also started a zikatesting program last month. Donors will be tested for west nile virus and a number of other diseases.
