Yeah, frank, sometime overnight vandals climbed a 25 foot tank like this one cutting a couple of locks. They left graffiti behind but no one is certain thats all dont do nothing with your water right now. Dont drink it. Dont touch it. Thats why i came down here. This Water District yard in South San Francisco was busy with activity as people arriving home learned their water could be tainted and came to get bottled water offered for free. This is the first time in 52 years never seen this happen. Vandalism. Thats what i heard. Does that surprise you . Nothing surprises me these days. Customers received phone calls and door to door visits. 000 households are a 1,000 households are affected in the Sunshine Gardens neighborhood. I think there should have been a lot more security up there at the tanks after 9 11. Theyre vulnerable up there by themselves. There should have been cameras or lighting. The vandalism was found this morning. 8foot tall letters, f and m painted on the smaller of two tanks with a 250,000 gallon capacity. To do it the taggers had to cut several locks and climb on to the top where a hatch into the water lies under a screen. It appeared one of the locks had been cut there. We dont think the tank was breeched. Its a heavy screening device. It would take four big men to move it. We dont think it was moved. Initial tests show no contamination but more sophisticated results wont come become for more than a day. The water was dm ped. A dumped. A small sacrifice for safety managers say. And customers agree with the abundance of caution. I have two little cats. They dont know any better. It wasnt just a precaution for ourselves but the pets as well. We dont know whats in there. Free water distribution resumes at 8 00 in the morning and will continue until those test rultss confirm results confirm there is no hazard. Customers who buy water on their own should save receipts and be reimbursed. This graffiti is gangrelated. Theyve seen the tags before and the agency says this is a very rare occurrence. Frank and alyana, it serves about 00,000 kus 100,000 customers. Hopefully they catch the guys or girls that climbed up there. Thank you so much.
