figure out a way to provide. congressman, do you believe the senate should go reconciliation? to talk about the problems in the senate bill which is going to, in my opinion, damage the support for the legislation for working families and for taxes because some of these crazied a ones that took place in december. and get the place in system that a great country is worthy of in terms of supplying health care to all americans. congressman, good to have you with us tonight. thanks soç much. the thing that is so amazing, you know, if we cover every american, all of these righties in washington squawking about the budget and deficit, we d save money. we d save money. we would save money if we would do this. thank you, congressman. appreciate your time. okay. take care, ed. you bet. thank you. coming up, a congressman from the heartland has had it with these massive bonuses but the folks at aig are dishing out bruce bailey will roll out his blue print for recovery in just a moment. plus, the president was back in front of the cameras taking questions from congress today. this time, senate democrats had their turn. bernie sanders will join me at the bottom tonight of the hour to talk about a number of different issues. stay with us. you re watching the ed show. five percent cashback bonus on travel. it pays to get more, it pays to discover. aren t absorbed properly unless taken with food. he recommended citracal. it s different it s calcium citrate, so it can be absorbed with or without food. also available in small, easy-to-swallow petites. citracal. doesn t like to be held back. they let me break past the counter. and choose any car in the aisle. unreal! oh yeah! whoaaa ( alarm sounding ) i m sorry. you okay? my bad, mr. sapp. oh yeah. go national. go like a pro. president obama s pay czar has called aig s bonus payments outrageous. the chairman of the pop louse caucus will tell me what he plans to do with it next. stay with us. my crest extra white and white. do you want to try my crest extra white with scope outlast? i m good. i bet your breath will still feel fresh when the movie s over. if i win, i m going to vegas with the boys. ok. if i win, you re going to yoga with me. i love yoga. [ female announcer ] crest extra white plus scope outlast. well, it s bonus time for folks at aig. this time the company will be doling out $100 million for people in the products division department. that s the department responsible for the risky bets that helped sink the company in the first place. white house pay czar ken said that they were legal, contractually agreed upon before aig was bailed out and before they went in the toilet. but for taxpayers who spent $180 billion toress sky aig, it s just kind of hard to reece son, isn t it? those bonuses are kind of tough to swallow. joining me now is the founder and chairman of theç populous caucus if the bonuses are legal, what is the sense of squawking about it? . well, one of the things that is loud and clear was that aig needed to wake up to the reality that most middle class americans deal with every day and start learning a lesson and the over sight with the folks working with aig when the head of that division was fired, ed, it was shocking to learn that the day after they fired him they gave him a severance package that included a million dollars. and each of those ceos could have terminated those payments under the terms of their agreement and done nothing. now it s time for congress to teach them a lesson and my friend peter welch has a plan to do that by making sure that companies like aig that received assistance from the t.a.r.p. program and who paid bonuses in excess of $50,000, those bonuses above that amount would be taxed at a rate of 50%. the revenues from that who actually was creating. here is senator grassley from iowa blaming the obama administration. here he is. and it says, aig has taxpayers over a barrel. the obama administration has been outmaneuvered and the closed-door negotiations just adds to the skepticism that tax payers will ever get the upper hand. is there blame before or after this whole situation and moving forward, what kind of legislation would you want to put in place that would change the way that they do business? well, i think my colleague from iowa is is for getting the facts that the bush administration came to $700 billion to bail out the financial institutions and gave us a three-page proposal to do it. we took an approach to address the enormous financial crisis and the way we re going to try to make wall street pay for main street s rehabilitation is by reare instating a transfer fee on excessive stock trading in place for 50 years in this country and generate $150 billion of new revenueses, create jobses, and reduce the deficit. congressman, thank you for joining us tonight. that s a populous move thatç you re talking about. thanks for having me on. the man who shows how much of a dirty man he really is. that s next in psycho talk. when your eyes are smiling. you re smiling. and when they re laughing. you re laughing. be kind to your eyes. with transitions lenses. transitions adapt to changing light so you see your whole day comfortably. and conveniently while protecting your eyes from the sun. ask your eyecare professional which transitions lenses are right for you. fresh off a weekend of judging the miss america pageant, i m not sure the man who coined the term feminazi, a man that already struggles and tries not to be seen as sexist. look at the way that he refers to the anchor of the news today on his radio show. anchor babe and 60 minutes contributor katie couric. anchor babe. okay. that s not bad. the dirty old man did. i m a huge supporter of women. what i m not is a supporter of liberalism i love women and the women walking behind it. he s a supporter of women as long as they look good and live in the 1950s. you saying that you support women is in the same brekt that you re disparaging them. senator bernie sanders was in the room. i ll talk about that and other issues coming up. plus, the obama administration is usinging its own kind of enhancement interrogation instead of torcher, they called his mom and dad and it s working. we ll show you that. would you like a pony ? ye ! ( cluck, cluck, cluck ) oh, wowww ! that s fun ! you didn t say could have a real one. well, you didn t ask. even kids know when it s wrong to hold out on somebody. why don t banks ? we re ally, a new bank that alerts you when your money could be worki harder d earning more. it s just the right thing to do. transform drinks you want, into cold medicine you need. introducing fast crystal packs. a new way from alka-seltzer plus to. get cold and flu relief in a taste-free, fizz-free powder. alka-seltzer plus. that s right. enjoy the world s perfect pepper. pace. made right since 1947. when it comes to protecting the things you care about. .leave nothing to chance. travelers. insurance for auto, home, and business. we don t tinker with health care. we don t put in place any insurance reforms. we don t mess with the banks. and if our response ends up being, you know, because we don t want to we don t want to stir things up here, we re just going to do things that were done before, i don t know what differ rengs it s a us from the other guys. the president getting after his own party today and the message was firm and to the point, democrats need to prove that they can get things done or the american people are going to lose in this whole deal. joining me now is vermont senator bernie sanders. senator, good to have you on tonight. did the president rally the troops today? how do you feel about what he had to say in. i think he made a number of important points. and one of the most important points is that we have got to stop playing defense and we have got to go on the offense. the idea that we are being lectured to by right wing republicans about the deficit crisis is totally incomprehensible because these are exactly the guys who by and large caused these crisis. these are the people that went to war in iraq that eventually will charge between 2 and $3 trillion. they didn t pay for that war. they are the people that gave hundreds and billions of dollars in tax breaks they are the ones that had a bailout, 700 billion. i don t want to lecture these guys by the deficit crisis. they caused it. senator, you ve got everything together when it comes to the priority of the american people. democrats have lost focus that they are still theç majority. and in a generation we ve got to remember that. there was apparently a headline after the massachusetts election and 59 majority. we still have to lead. so senator, do you believe that the republicans will work with this president and your side of the aisle on anything? no, i don t. i think they have a strategy, which is working very, very well for them. it s called obstructionism. it s called filibustering. it s called doing everything you possibly can to make sure that obama doesn t score any successes. and i think the time is long overdue for the democratic leadership you don t even have to have go forward on a jobs program senator, i want to be very clear, what is your position on the t.a.r.p. money being used, $30 billion that would go for job creation? are you for or against it? no, i m absolutely for it. we are looking at 17 million people are unemployeed or underemployed. we ve got to rebuilt this economy and provide jobs for 1 million people. how you do it is get credit out to small a lot of people have been talking about this. and create new jobs to get the loans that they need senator bernie sanders, i appreciate your time. thank you for being here. first, the president goes and speaks to the republicans and says i ll talk to the democrats as well. is the white house winging it what s your take on all of this? i think they are looking for retraction and iç think that ty are going to get it. i think the president s message is pretty clear today. and then having the house pass the senate bill, no one can stand in the way of a filibuster. you don t need a super majority anywhere. the excerpt that you had of the president, he was answering a question from branch lincoln, the senator from arkansas san. he said, can we stop trying to do things and then maybe i ll get re-elected. and the president was saying today, we need democrats to move ahead. we have to move ahead on health care and jobs and a whole set of other issues. financial reform is going to be more difficult. that s the message that they are sending to congress. so, bob, as a political strategist and consultant, and spoken to the nation what if they continue the stall tactics and obstructionist behavior? there are no death panels, insurance companies, for example, and, oops, you hip your upper limit for the year so no more chemotherapy. i think if we do that and if the economy continues to improve, that s the best prospect and if you ask people in a poll, do you want everybody to work together, sure. but mostly what people want is they want movement and action and they want to see this economy improve and democrats are going to get all of the blame for health care and none of the credit unless they get this bill through. bob, always a pleasure. thank you to have you with us tonight. thank you so much. thank you. i want to turn to terrorists. they respond to theç alleged christmas day bomber and the isn t was providing valuable and action nabl information to authorities. that s not stopping authorities. and quoted assaying, we will never know whether the quality and quantity of information might have been spreerier had he not been given a lawyer who was now guiding him object r on what to reveal. joining us now is what should the president and administration s response to all of this rhetoric in the wake of getting what they say is action nabl intelligence from this alleged bomber on christmas day? what do you say? using the civilian court and we have 100% constriction of terrorists. by using the civilian system, they convinced this guy s father to come over from africa where he convinced his father to spill the beans and convict the son to cooperate much, much less the idea that waterboarding there s been a lot of success using the system that they use in this case. and floatinged up by the suspect? what do you think. this is just political opposing and, again, and even and this has been amateur hour within theç best intentions an where it s been shown to be anything but thorough and competent in dealing with this issue. michael, that s really kind of silly. unreasonable people can disagree with he should be tried. he s not going to get tried in new york. no, of course not. but the fact that they are moving the trial now is that the military tribunal process as failed. and they are arguing absurdly and neglected the fact. i think it s hurting our country. i think the term soft on terrorism is unfortunate and i wouldn t use that term. it was a courageous decision. good news on that the problem is that he s not soft on terrorism. but he s indices sif. the profile and number one and he made a promise a day after he became president, it was already broken and, again, this needs to be more consistent and more capable. the details of how they blowed that decision, president bush also calling for closing guantanamo. so did john mccain. jonathan, michael medvd, appreciate your time. sf. stay with us. ed, we don t lack energy in this country. we lack resolve. we lack the resolve to break the addiction of foreign oil. yes, we can remove the ash carbon monoxide and that s just one step. montana alone has enough and add north dakota and wyoming and they can probably change the world. i m heartened that this administration is finally seeing the necessity of breaking our addiction to foreign oil and creating a new american energy system cleaner and greener. governor, great to have you with us. it s great to see you again. appreciate your time. good to be back, neighbor. you bet. governor from montana. coming up, amazing stories and heart wrenching stories from this free clinic in hartford, connecticut when we come back. right here on the ed show. stay with us. libu has onstar. big deal. i ll just use my phone. let s say we crashed. whoops, you lost your phone and you re disoriented. i m not disoriented. now you are. onstar automatic crash response can call to see if you re ok. onstar emergency. is everything ok howie? (announcer) right now, all over the country, discover customers are getting five percent cashback bonus on travel. it pays to get more, it pays to discover. welcome to the ed show at the free health care lynn nick in connecticut. bruce gold is the medical director for the hartford department of health and human services. he s the associate dean for primary care at the university of connecticut medical school. thank you for being with us tonight and thank you for what you re doing. why are you here? well, my day job is running a clinic in hartford in the north end for both the university and st. francis hospital and day to day i see the carnage of a broken health care system, of a health care system most doctors agree that it s not working for a lot of their patients. and if you re uninsured, you don t have access to anything. what s the common denominator for the folks that you are seeing here? they ve lost their job, some have become ill. they are working trying to make their lives better and yet they have no access at all to any health care. some of them have preventible diseases, hypertension, things that we can treat. i think most doctors, and i think polls have supported this, that most doctors are in favor of broad health care reform. really retooling the system. we realize that it s just not working. i think that it just tells us. i have a patient waiting for me from woodstock, new york. that came all the way new york state to get health care. we still have a wealthy country. we have somehow lost the caring for our neighbors that we once had. do we have a shortage of doctors in this country if everyone were to be covered? if everyone were to be covered and looking at the retirement rates and aging of the population, i think we need more doctors across the board, as well as other providers. and we also need a redistribution of those doctors into primary care and generalism.ç i asked the question do you think washington politicians understand the yes and no. hardball is next. chris matthews is next with hardball. rules of engagement. good evening. i m chris matthews starting off in washington. a push to turn an american president s meeting with his political rivals and allies into a regular event. why can t our guy do it. the republican criticism of how the obama administration handled the christmas day bombing attempt. more on that in the program. we re going to have a lot more of that on the program tonight. mainly the issue is going to be the question of whether the president should meet regularly with his political opponents in some formal manner. back to the christmas day bomber. the question is whether it is being handled correctly with a criminal approach, with miranda rights or you lose a lot of information that way. a lot of questions if the republicans are guilty, if that is the right word, of doing the exact same thing the democrat are doing. if the shoe fits wear it. andrew young who once took the sheet for being the father of john edwards love child is
