More money, and thats something thats really nice to see. A lot of you have been following me when we were on a thing called the campaign. That was an exciting campaign. The great campaign. I used to talk about wages going down, not going up but going down for years. 19 years. Now, they just went up 3. 2 . Yet, theres no inflation, because other things are going down, like the price of your gasoline at the tank. Its low. That doesnt happy luck. I work ha happen on luck. I work hard on that. It is like a tax cut for people. Lot of great things are happening. Labor participation increased to 63. 1 . Incredible number, also. I wanted to bring that out. The economy is very good. Remember, from the time of my election, the stock market has gone up very close to 30 . Thats with all of the things that are happening, and there are a lot of things happening. We have a massive trade negotiation going on with china. President xi is very much involved. So am i. Were dealing at the highest levels, and were doing very well. Were doing very well. In the meantime, weve taken in billions and billions of dollars in tariffs from china, and from others. Our Steel Industry has come roaring back. That makes me very happy. I think well have to build a steel wall, as opposed to a concrete wall, because we have Steel Companies again. Theres something awfully nice about that sound. So we had a productive meeting today with Speaker Pelosi and senator schumer. I thought it was really a very, very good meeting. Were all on the same path, in terms of wanting to get government open. Were going to be meeting. I have designated a group, and were going to be meeting over the weekend, that group, to determine what were going to do about the border. Really, i want to thank a lot of the Border Patrol people, the nice people who came up yesterday. They had a tremendous impact on, i think, a lot of democrats, frankly, but a lot of people. Because they were able to lay out exactly what the problem is. One of the problems described to me as an example, ports of entry. Were going to agree with chuck and nancy and dick durbin was there. Were going to agree, we want to make the ports bigger, more powerful, able to handle more traffic. Have very, very powerful drug equipment there. They make very good stuff now. We dont have it because of budgets and other reasons, but were going to make our ports of entry very powerful, very strong. Were going to have the best drug finding equipment anywhere in the world. They make it much better today than they made it even two years ago. And i explained to them, the problem is, we could have a wonderful port of entry, but you have 2,000 miles of border between the United States and mexico. If you take a look and you see, like we do, through certain technology, including cameras and airplanes, not just drones, youll see vast numbers of vehicles driving through the desert and entering where you dont have a very powerful fence or a wall. That happened this week, where a wonderful, young Police Officer i spoke to his wife yesterday where he was shot, viciously shot, for simply stopping a person that came over the border illegally. Got shot and killed. Took the most beautiful picture just hours before, a christmas picture. We dont want that happening. But i was explained, too, and i explain to people, because it is really common sense, so you have ports of entry, and we have Great Security at the ports of entry. You may have fencing or walls up and down, left and right, east and west, but they stop. Because we dont have proper Border Security. These people have vehicles. They drive to the right. Theyre not going through where we have great Border Patrol officers, i. C. E. Officers, and military now. Ill tell you, the military has done a fantastic job. They dont stop. They go right to the easiest part and the weakest part. Sometimes out in the desert. You have miles and miles and miles of unprotected area. You can see where they drive over. You even have people walking that trek. It is a very dangerous trek. They bring children. Or even worse, they use children. You know, children are the biggest beneficiaries of what we want to do. Children are hurt more than anybody else. These coyotes, what they do with children, all because we have open borders, because they think they can get away with it. They dont come through the port, where we have a lot of protection. They come in through empty areas, vast spaces, empty areas, just like this terrible person came in when he shot the officer. You dont even have a sign saying, mexico u. S. There is no sign designating, you have just entered the United States. Just open space. I explained that to the meeting today, with nancy pelosi, chuck schumer, and a lot of other people at the meeting. I said, one of the things that happens there is human traffickers. Maybe thats the worst of all. Where youll have traffickers, having three and four women, with tape in their mouths and tied up, sitting in the back of a van or a car, and theyll drive that van or the car not through a port of entry, where we have very talented people that look for every little morsel of drugs, even people, whatever theyre looking for. Not going to go there. They get off the road, and they drive out into the desert. They come in, make a left turn, usually it is a left, not a right. Most of them come out because in san diego, in areas of california, we just finished brandnew walls. Beautiful walls. Steel walls. They wanted them badly. They were asking us. Thats why we did it there. I said, lets not do it in california. California always complains through their great governors. Theyre always complains iing. I said, let the governor ask us. We did it anyway because they were having problems. We have a great, new wall in san diego, and it is working really well. You should go look at it. It is amazing. Incredible how well it works. But these coyotes and these human traffickers, they make a right turn before they get to the port of entry. They go as far as the wall is or as far as the barricade is, then they make a left, welcome to the United States. What they do, usually with the women, sometimes children, that theyre trafficking, with an end you dont want to know about. So the only way youre going to stop that is by having a solid steel structure or concrete structure. Whether it is a wall or some form of very powerful steel. Now, the steel is actually more expensive than the concrete. I think were probably talking about steel because i really feel the other side feels better about it. I can understand what theyre saying. It is more expensive. We mentioned the price, that we want 5. 6 billion. Very strongly. Numbers are thrown around. 1. 6, 2. 1, 2. 5. This is National Security were talking about. Were not talking about games. Were talking about National Security. This should have been done by all of the president s that preceded me, and they all know it. Some of them have told me that we should have done it. So were not playing games. We have to do it. Just remember, human traffickers, drugs. The drugs are pouring into this country. They dont go through the ports of entry. When they do, they sometimes get caught. When we finish, the democrats do want this, they want ports of entry strengthened, and i want to do that, too. In fact, we have it down. Its about 400 million. We could have the best equipment in the world. Now, what theyll do, if we have the protection and we have strong ports of entry, with this incredible drugfinding equipment, i dont know what theyre going to do. Theyre not coming in through past the steel gates or the steel walls, or the concrete walls, depending on whats happening. Because we are meeting this weekend. We have a group ive set up a group. They are going to tell us who their group of experts and probably people in the senate and congressmen and women are going to come. We have three. I said, give us three. I said, send over nine or six or three or two. Doesnt matter. Send over whoever you want. It is common sense. So now, when they make that turn, they make it, and now, all of a sudden, they cant go any further. They have to go back. Thats going to stop the caravans for two reasons. Number one, theyre not going to be able to get through. When they realize they cant get through, whats going to happen . Theyre not going to form, and theyre not going to try and come up. And they can apply for asylum. They can, most importantly, they can apply for citizenship. Because the companies i told you that created these great job numbers, theyre incredible job numbers, beyond anybodys expectations. I dont think there was one wall street genius, of which i know many of them, but theyre not geniuses. Theres not one that predicted anywhere close to these job numbers. I thought they were going to be good. There wasnt one that i saw. Now, we have everything so beautifully handled. We need to have, however, Border Security. All of this security, if we do what, i think, what the democrats want, all of the border things that well be building, will be done right here in the good old usa by Steel Companies that were practically out of business when i came into office as president. Now, theyre thriving. You call up the heads of u. S. Steel. I could name ten companies. You look at whats going on with the Steel Industry, it is almost a miracle. It was a dead industry. We need steel for defense. We need steel for a lot of things. Steel and aluminum. Those industries were in deep trouble. The Steel Industry was almost dead. Now, it is a very vibrant, vibrant industry. So what im going to do is ask, first of all, mike pence, Vice President , to say a couple of words. Mike is we put together a team of people that will work over the weekend, and theyll be negotiating on the border, on the look, on Different Things having to do with Border Security. Including at the ports of entry. I think theyre going to be very successfu fuful because i found democrats really want to do something. Were at 5. 6 if you look at it, 5. 6 billion, but we are able to also, in addition to that, because what we want to do has to be done properly, and were negotiating very tough prices, very, very tough. You heard much higher numbers. Those higher numbers were very much a misnomer. You heard 20 and 25 million in daca. What happened, when a judge incredibly because it was an incredibly, i will say, wrong decision. In fact, president obama, when he signed the daca, with the executive order, made a statement to the effect, this isnt going to work. Some judge from the 9th circuit, here we go again, upheld it, then it was upheld by the 9th circuit appellate. Now, it is going before the United States Supreme Court. Hopefully, that will be properly adjudicated because if it is, talks will begin on larger immigration matters having to do with daca, having to do with other things. So that is taking place. We may add a few things onto our discussions over the weekend. Im going to ask mike pence. Then ill have leader mccarthy say a few words. Well take a couple of questions. Were very proud of the jobs and the job numbers. That was incredible. I think ill be even more proud if we could have great Border Security for the first time in, really, the history of our country. The southern border is a dangerous, horrible disaster. Weve done a great job, but you cant really do the kind of job we have to do unless you have a major, powerful barrier. Thats what were going to have to have. First, we start with mike pence. Thank you, mr. President. Thank you, mr. President. We are nearly two weeks into a Government Shutdown, but our nation is also in the midst of a crisis on our southern border. Today, President Trump convened for the second time this week republican and democrat leaders from the congress to address both issues. We are truly grateful for the candid and constructive dialogue that took place today here at the white house, with Speaker Pelosi and leader schumer, with our Republican Senate leadership, as well. We look forward to Vice President pence right now talking to reporters. The president presented a very different reality from what we heard from the democrats a little bit earlier today. The democrats basically saying they have not come to any sort of agreement, making it sound like they were still pretty far from an agreement. At one point, leader schumer even saying that the president said he would keep the shutdown going for months, even years, if he had to. Lets listen to what the democrats said a moment ago. We just completed a lengthy and sometimes contentious conversation with the president. We agreed that we will continue our conversations, but we all recognize we recognize, on the democratic side, that we really cannot resolve this until we open up government. We made that very clear. We told the president , we needed the government open. He resisted. In fact, he said hed keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years. Again, the president still wants 5. 6 billion for his border wall. Today, he said a moment ago, it doesnt have to be cement. Hed like it to be steel potentially. A little bit of news. Mitch mcconnell was not standing behind him, the majority leader of the senate, during the news conference. He issued a statement to reporters saying, we had a spirited discussion, as you can imagine, about the situation we find ourselves in. We know what spirited means. He also mentioned the president agreed to send his top people, quote, top people, to sit down with the leaders staff this weekend to see if they can come up with an agreement, to recommend back to him and us and the various leaders. Mcconnell says it is, at the very least, hopeful that Democratic Leaders have agreed to send their aides to a meeting this weekend. Again, we are still quite some time away from any sort of end to this partial Government Shutdown. Joining me, nbc news capitol hill correspondent garrett haake. White house reporter, kelly odonnell. New york times reporter, nick. Also, correspondent jacob soboroff. Garrett, two very conflicting descriptions of those meetings there. Again, well go back to the president if he starts taking questions. He is calling it hopeful. Mcconnell calls it hopeful. Pelosi and schumer, not so much. Reporter no. Pelosi and schumer saying they think the shutdown or they got the sense from the president that hed like the shutdown to go on longer, or be willing to let it go on longer. The number two democrat in the house is here talking to reporters where we cant have cameras. He said daca, for example, didnt come up in this discussion at the white house. It is unclear exactly what did for the two hours that this negotiation was going on. Youre watching the president just now. If youre a democratic member of congress, youre trying to negotiate a solution to this, i dont know how you take anything from what the president just said there and understand what it is he wants. I got pro steel, barrier in the desert, in california, maybe not in california because they complain. I mean, this is what democrats have been complaining about. How do you negotiate with someone who is all over the map on this sort of thing . You heard the Vice President elude to this. We heard Mitch Mcconnell elude to the idea of a working group, a stafflevel working group who might be able to come up with something the parties can agree to. Again, theres no movement on either side about the idea of a wall, except perhaps now it extends further into the desert than had been previously discussed. I dont know what you do with this if youre a member of congress. That was one of the most striking things ive seen in the two years of this presidency. Thats saying a lot. Reporter yeah. It is unclear. Listen, when the president agrees to something, weve seen in the past that he is very willing to renege on the agreement at a moments notice, even after all the papers have been all but signed. Basically just sent to his desk. Jonathan jonathan, what is the strategy here . What i heard from the president a moment ago, beyond the back and forth on where hi wae wantee wall, whether itd be in california, and what i heard from the White House Press secretary this morning, communications director, press secretary sarah sanders, was fear mongering. Sarah sanders saying 4,000 terrorists are apprehended at the border every day. Thats not true. Jacob soboroff will fact check that for us in a moment. The president is talking about smugglers, talking about all the crime that pours over the border. Is this just all about making it seek like theres a crisis . Is that their strategy . It certainly i mean, certainly, the president s remarks, rambling as they were, was delivered like a campaign speech. It wasnt an update about legislation. It is the same weve often heard, him discussing the threat at the border. We heard about the caravan which, of course, never did arrive off the southern border of the United States. This still feels for the president as a base play. It is an attempt to be strong for the people who have supported him. He feels he cant give them up. It was interesting last night, in fact, that sean hannity of fox news, who is an unofficial white house spokesman, raised the idea of the daca for wall trade. Yet, we hear now that that didnt come up in the meeting at all. Perceived as perhaps a float. The Vice President in a separate fox interview also gave a little life to that idea. That didnt happen now. Was it a message from sean hannity and potentially the Vice President to trudonald trump . Thats how it works sometimes. Unclear if it is the president giving his blessing to a what world are we living in now . Donald trump is president. People who advice him often do it through fox news, or they think they have the president s blessing to go forwa
