MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Kendis Gibson And Lindsey Reiser January 24, 2021

Dire assessment of the pandemic as the nation tops 25 million covid19 cases. About a quarter of the worlds total. Plus i thought the president had some responsibility when it came to the response. I also think everybody across this country has some responsibility. There it is. House minority leader Kevin Mccarthy on the defense after those comments blaming all americans for the capitol riot. Good morning. Its sunday, january 24th. Im lindsey reiser. We have a Team Following the latest for you right now. But were going to begin in washington, d. C. With nbc White House Correspondent monica alba and nbcs Heidi Przybyla who is covering capitol hill. Monica we start with you at 1600 with that new reporting from the wall street journal that broke overnight about how trump reportedly wanted the department of justice and the Supreme Court to help with his efforts to overturn the election. Thats right, kendis. Theres a new occupant and completely new administration here at the white house, but its the predecessors actions that continue to raise eyebrows and concerns over just now desperate thenpresident donald trump was to overturn a free and Fair Election with new reporting overnight from the wall street journal that suggests that the president then weeks ago went to the department of justice and some of the highest ranking officials there and told them he wanted them to file a case that would go all the way up to the Supreme Court to invalidate joe bidens election victory. They pushed back and said they would not do that and that if there was pressure or a single actor who did it, that then youd have many of these officials resign en masse. This was still when attorney general bill barr was working, according to the wall street journal, and he was one of the ones quick to say there is absolutely no evidence of voter fraud and so that is not something that he was going to be supportive of. Yesterday nbc news confirmed reporting that the New York Times and the Washington Post had first put out there that suggests that President Trump when he was in office wanted to replace the acting attorney general in order to further these baseless claims. Again, we know none of that happened, but this is another question and what now, as a former president , donald trump may have in terms of criminal liability or probes and things that people will be looking into in terms of what might have happened, even though things didnt come to pass. A trump adviser gave us a statement yesterday saying there was no such plot, but we havent gotten reaction yet to this latest report from the wall street journal. Heidi, in the meantime, Chuck Schumer is calling for an investigation. What more do we know . It was almost exactly a year ago that this senate acquitted this president , this former president on charges of abuse of power. And at the time, many of the moderate republicans like Susan Collins said, well, the reasoning for that is that he has learned this lesson. Now what we have is essentially documentary evidence in the form of this legal brief that the president asked his advisers to draft up to attempt to pressure the Supreme Court to essentially overturn a democratic election. So we already have the Senate Majority leader now responding to that saying, kendis, that it is unconscionable that a Trump Justice Department leader would conspire to subvert the will of the people. That the Justice Department Inspector General must launch an investigation into this attempted sedition now and that this impeachment will go forward. The big question here is how will republicans react to this . Because much of the reporting to this point has been that there most likely will not be the 17 republicans needed to actually acquit this president. Look for the democrats to fold this into some of their arguments. We know they are planning to present, for instance, a lot of the visuals from that day, but this document and this reporting seems to strike right at the heart of the issue and the reason why republicans used to acquit the president last time saying, no, he would never do Something Like that again. He would never abuse his power again. Now we have this evidence. Democrats will definitely be using that, at a minimum, as part of their arguing in this court trial that will start on february 8th. Heidi, what can you tell us about what will happen in that time between when the house sends the article over to the senate and the start date of that trial . So well see on monday night, tomorrow at about 7 00, the house impeachment managers will march that article over here to the senate. They will be reading that aloud on the senate floor the next day. The jurors, which is the entire senate, will be sworn in. And then well have that twoweek grace period. In that time, dont expect to see a lot taking place publicly, but behind the scenes, the president will be preparing his case with his attorneys. A lot of Big Questions looming, of course, whether there will be any new evidence introduced, which is raised by essentially this reporting today from the wall street journal as well. We have two weeks here. How much more is going to come out. The democrats also preparing their case but publicly what youll see in the senate is really just a lot of busy work. The type of daytoday work that you see at the beginning of any administration. Helping this president appoint his cabinet nominees. Now some of them have been virtually, you know, not had much of a hard time getting passed through, but there could be others such as the health and Human Services secretary that could be a bigger fight, but that twoweek head will be publicly somewhat quiet. Monica, President Biden taking a handsoff approach to trumps impeachment. Any concern here it could overshadow what hes trying to do . Yeah, that is certainly a worry of some white house officials who certainly want to prioritize things like getting a Coronavirus Relief package through congress. Later today theyll be meet with a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers trying to hash out some of these details. Some of them have already expressed concerns over the steep price tag of 1. 9 trillion. President biden said hes a little bit worried that if the trial had started sooner, they wouldnt have been able to do this or to confirm some of the outstanding cabinet nominees. The fact you have this twoweek delay, President Biden argues will be able to help him confront some of these multiple crises. But it does raise a lot of questions about how you pitch a message of unity and bringing together both parties when you have a heated impeachment trial going. We know candidate joe biden really campaigned on that, wanting to bring the country together but now this puts him right in the middle of what is sure to be a quite toxic and partisan political environment in the coming weeks. For his part, President Biden has said he does believe that donald trump did with inciting the insurrection was completely inappropriate but he hasnt gone further to say whether he thinks he should be convicted in this trial leaving that fully to the senators who will make that decision. Monica alba and Heidi Przybyla, thank you both. Joining us now is democrat congresswoman Debbie Wassermanschultz of florida. Happy to have you with us. Thanks for being up bright and early on this sunday. I want to start with the reporting surrounding trumps effort to overturn the election results. If you were an impeachment manager, would you try to bring that into this article . I think its very clear that donald trump took an an all of the above approach to trying to stay in power. Was willing to do anything from abuse the power of the Justice Department to inciting an insurrection, and donald trump and our impeachment managers are going to use all the tools they have at their disposal and the evidence that is mounting that donald trump clearly was willing to do anything to stay in power, including incite insurrection. Congresswoman, if trump is not convicted by the senate, which increasingly it looks like that right now, how will he be held accountable for his actions . Well, hes already historically the only president in history thats been impeached twice. And there are other avenues, legislatively, that we can take. Potentially using the 14th amendment to bar him from ever serving again because he aided and provided comfort to, as the section 3 indicates, to those that would try to overthrow the government. And so we have other avenues, but the most important thing right now, the house did its job. Our impeachment managers will present their case to the senate, and im confident that the senate will hear the evidence and, look, theres no question this happened and that the president is guilty every single day more and more rioters that have been arrested said that they were there because donald trump sent them there and said that the election was stolen from them and that they needed to fight for whatever their version of justice was. So im not so sure that conviction is out of reach here. House minority leader Kevin Mccarthy is face something backlash following comments about who bears responsibility for what happened at the capitol. Heres what he said in an interview airing today. I thought the president had some responsibility when it came to the response. I also think everybody across this country has some responsibility. Think about four years ago after the President Trump was sworn in. What happened the very next day . The title was resist with people walking in the streets. Maxine waters saying to confront people. Confront them in the restaurants. We had people, Steve Scalise got shot. We should take this moment to time to figure out how to correct ourselves. He said i called for the rioters to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and have repeatedly said its incumbent upon every person in america to help lower the temperature of our political discourse. Theres no question about that, congresswoman. But how do you square what he said with what the rest of us saw . I mean, Kevin Mccarthys got to be kidding me. He is one of the key architects of pushing the notion for stop the steal. He spent months suggesting and then weeks after the election suggesting there was still fraud, still that the election was not legitimate. And he himself supported the objections and the proposed impeachment. Theres no both sides to this. Donald trump and aided and abetted by the republicans in congress did everything he could to try to stay in power to overturn the results of a legitimate election and Kevin Mccarthy can try to wordsmith his way out of it, but the bottom line is that we have a twice impeached president who will be tried in the senate and who should is the committeed the worst, most heinous act that a president could possibly commit and thats to try to overthrow the outcome of violently, and aid others in violently overthrowing the outcome of a legitimate election. You represent the 23rd district right there in florida. Just a little bit north of you, you have a new neighbor in president former President Trump. I dont assume youve walked over there and given him a bundt cake, but what sort of welcoming is he getting from the folks down there . You know, i think theres a whole lot of folks, particularly around that area, about an hour north of me, that are not thrilled about their new neighbor. But, you know, the donald trump, the worst punishment for donald trump is obscurity. And so lets after we hopefully convict him in the United States senate, bar him from ever serving again and being the menace that he was to the United States the last four years. Lets punish him by ceasing to talk about him. We have a lot to focus on. We have to get this virus crushed, our economy revived and we have to make sure that we nurse this country back to health and engage in the unity that President Biden talked about this week so warmly in his remarkable inaugural address. I know there had been a push to rename the International Palm Beach Airport after trump. The commissioners said, no thank you. Thats all i can say. Debbie wasserman schultz, thank you. Were back with the very latest on the coronavirus pandemic. And a new marker for the United States. The country now reaching more than 25 million covid19 cases. About a quarter of the worlds entire total. The death toll now just under 417,000. The cdc says it administered more than 20 million doses of the Covid Vaccine and distributed more than 41 million doses. It actually includes people who have received one or more shots. And Washington State is the latest state to announce its first cases of the more contagious uk variant. The Health Department there found two cases in the same county. At least 196 cases of this new strain has been detected in nearly two dozen states so far. Joe biden vowed to take a wartime action against the virus. And now were seeing that play out with some new executive orders. They include the most sweeping covid travel regulations weve seen so far in the United States as new covid variants continue to emerge across the world. His order reinforces a cdc mandate that starting this week anyone flying into the United States has to prove that they have tested negative for covid. And quarantine when they get here. Msnbcs cori coffin is live at new yorks jfk airport. Cori, hope you can hear us. Tell us more about these new travel restrictions going into place. We may be having a small little audio problem with coris live shot in jfk. The new restrictions, quite a reversal from what President Trump tried to do just about a week ago when he tried to lift the restrictions. They will now go in place as part of the executive actions from this new administration. The new travel regulations come as dozens of countries deal with new covid variants like that strain first found in the uk which experts say isnt just more transmissible, it can be more deadly. Im going to bring in dr. Julie morida. Shes executive Vice President of the Robert Wood Johnson foundation. Good morning to you, doctor. How effective do you think these travel restrictions will be in the u. S. . Cori reported in our last hour, people overseas are scrambling to get into the u. S. Before they take effect. So i think its really important to recognize that when the president took office, the new president took office, he committed to the opening of schools, businesses, travel. And in order to do what he said, he wanted to do it safely. And in order to do it safely, requiring masks on planes on trains, on buses that are traveling interstate, requiring testing before people fly on airplanes. Those are all critical measures to ensure that people are actually safe when theyre flying and were able to do those activities. There arent enough vaccines or supplies in many states to keep up with demand. People are waiting in long lines like here in new york. Their appointments are canceled because theres no supply. So President Biden is increasing state aid, building a more comprehensive vaccination campaign, expanding testing and treatment for covid and for other measures. But he still warns these are longterm solutions. I know his team didnt get the vaccine plans until the 11th hour, but why wont we see any sort of alleviation any time soon . So i think its critical to recognize that what happened was during the transition, there was information that was being
