you can buy a couple houses for what they actual i go got for his glove. houses aren t selling as well as that glove apparently. it s not a bad price. we ll begin with the test vote in the senate on health care reform. mike viqueira is live for us at the white house this morning with the latest. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, jenna. let the debate begin after suspenseful moments up to the last two democrats holdouts took the floor and announced that they would vote for it. it was close. they needed never vote. 60 democrats. all 58 democrats and two independents who vote with them. 49 republicans voted against them. one republican was absent. let s have a look at what s actually in this bill. it does include a public option. that public option, however, would allow states to opt out. this will cover 31 million uninsured americans and put another way 94% of americans will have health insurance coverage if this bill passes paid for with new taxes. a lot of this might change. this debate will last well into the holidays. i understand these provisions in the senate bill are likely to change though, right? reporter: absolutely. the two senators who were the last holdouts went to the floor and announcing their support to allow this debate to go forward they say the public option has to come out if they re going to vote for this bill in the end. they re joined by joe lieberman in that stance. it appears that they can t get 60 votes for the public option and if it is going to pass the senate, it s going to have to be taken out somewhere along the line in this process. all right. mike viqueira, thank you. and now here s lester. david gregory is moderator of meet the press. good to see you. good morning, lester. walk us through what happens here. a couple weeks ago the house passed its own version. last night the senate takes a procedural vote. we ll talk about it and debate. how do we get from there to perhaps a final bill to be voted on? there s a lot of senate democrats who don t see that path very clearly right now even though there s been some conventional wisdom that this is reaching its conclusion in a positive way. the issue here and mike just alluded to it, what s the future of the public option? liberals in the senate want to see it in there. they want a robust plan. you heard whether it is blanche lincoln or mary landrieu or joe lieberman, you have to water that down without watering it down too much. the president has to exert leadership. there s a possibility for some kind of backup plan on a public option, which would mean there wouldn t be one but it could be triggered down the line if there s not enough competition in the system. that s where a lot of negotiation will be. focus on two democratic senators but now that we re in the debate when we get to the final bill, could it be more than two potential defections among democrats? absolutely. you have landrieu and joe lieberman as an independent but caucuses with democrats as you know. you have ben nelson. there are those who could raise these difficult issues over cost ultimately, over taxes, and again over the public option. let s talk about abortion. that certainly figured in the house version. some democrats that held their nose and agreed to restrictions on abortion to get it through the house. is that going to rear its head here again? it could. absolutely. i have talked to senate democrats who say that they looked at that experience in the house and said that catholic bishops heavily involved in lobbying on that issue will come to the senate side and let voices be heard and it could be another big wedge issue in terms of how they deal with that. it s also going to have an impact for more conservative members of the senate. republicans voted in line in their opposition to allowing this to go to debate. how are they going to position now their argument that this is going to be bad for business and that the cost is inflated? what s their next move? you see senator mcconnell talking about this being understated and massive expansion of government and bad for business and ultimately it will be a real drain on the deficit which is already huge and overall debt for the country. you will hear those arguments continue. they ll try to chip away here. they know there are potential gettable votes on the democrat side but democrats hope there s an opportunity to pick off a republican like olympia snowe if they can get the bill right. thanks, david. let s get more of today s headlines from tamron hall. we begin with a murder trial of american exchange student amanda knox accused of killing her british roommate. michelle is live in italy with more. good morning. reporter: good morning. for the last two years amanda knox has sat in jail. now, prosecutors are asking that she spend the rest of her life there with nine months solitary confinement. they played a computer generated reenactment of what they hank happened putting amanda at the center of it even though she says she was not there. she claim she was the one who attacked meredith kercher and the one who stabbed her in the throat. they say out of hatred for her. they also played graphic crime scene and autopsy photos. amanda turned her body away and would not look. she did ask to give a statement to the court saying that meredith was her friend and that what prosecutors are alleging is pure fantasy and not the truth. we expect a verdict in about two weeks. all right. michelle kosinski, thank you very much. dramatic video from turkey where intense mudslides caused a home to collapse into a pile of rubble. the family evacuated just minutes before this happened. look at that. heavy rains and major flooding to blame for this in that region. news from space this morning. shuttle astronaut randy breznick is a new father this morning. it s 11:04 last night, abigale joined the nasa family. mama and baby are doing very well. on behalf of planet earth ground team, please accept our heartfelt congratulations. what a sweet moment. they were awakened to the song butterfly kisses. breznik completed his first space walk. the glove michael jackson wore 26 years ago now sold for $320,000. add in commission and taxes and the final price tag a whopping $420,000 for a glove that s not even real diamonds. jackson s first wore the glove at the motown where he debuted the moon good morning. the sun is out this morning and it s really nice. a little chilly. humidity up but that will be dropping later on. and the barometer is high as well. we will see lots of sun today, maybe a few scattered clouds late, and in the now here s lester. thank you. singer susan boyle first grabbed worldwide attention when she dreamed a dream on stage on britain s got talent. now another of her dreams is about to come true. stephanie is live from london this morning with more. reporter: good morning, lester. you know, it used to be that music artists would come out with a debut album that would similarary bit, slowly catch on and if lucky, become a hit. reality tv talent contests have changed all of that. tomorrow some say susan boyle s debut album could skyrocket to number one. she walked on stage the unlikelyiest of talent show contestants or so it seemed. okay. what s the dream? we have high expectations because we think of childhood memories and they are very perfect and lovely so we feel like it should be this painting of relationships and there s competitive aspect of feeling martha stewart like. everyone should be perfect. it should be done well. it s a reflection of who i am and how well everything comes out. there s almost a depression component of those folks who can t go home for holidays. thanksgiving is a family time. suddenly you have to work or you can t afford a trip. what do you advise to those folks? travel is expensive. people can t. you have to remember the holiday is about relationships and it doesn t have to be your mom or dad or your sibling. could be relationships with people around you. i would advise those people to be with somebody and to reach out to a friend and say i can t go home this year what are you doing? and gather people together. it can be a nice new relationship. i like what the one guy said. people stress over things they can t control which brings me to the whole travel thing. it has its own level of stress. traffic or the flight gets canceled or the fog rolls in. was that good advice he offered? travel can be the most stressful part of the holiday. yes. i would say you want to plan your travel so that it is away from holiday either come early or leave later or think about ways that you re not going to be so enraged by the time you get there that it will all spillover into the holiday. why do family gatherings go sour? they re people you lovely. they re family. you get together and the woman said a moment ago the saturday breakdown. exactly. this is the reason. when families come together, they tend to regress. they regress into their original roles of remember when we were kids and we fought like this and we competed like this and parents tend to treat their adult children like children so we regress into old roles and they don t work anymore. you have to be aware of that and try to operate at the new level that you currently exist in. then there s the want to be a fly on the wall for dinner table conversation because there s always one person that brings up the taboo subject and then things go downhill. what things should be avoided in those conversations? secretive or sensitive things. this is not the time to say you re 30, why aren t you dating? come out. high competition topics. things that pit people against each other. if your kids are both applying to college from different families, don t talk about that. highly charged political issues. if you know someone is against abortion maybe don t talk about abortion issues there. those kinds of things. the weather is always nice. you can always talk about the weather. there are many things you can talk about. you think about it. it s a time of togetherness. work out disagreements beforehand or afterwards and not at the holiday. this is a good conversation to have to get people s minds wrapped around this. always good to have you on. thanks very much. here s jenna. if you re hosting thanksgiving dinner this year you have questions about how to prep your turkey and keep the family happy. here to answer the questions is andrew nolton. good morning. so we re going to jump right in. we have pressing questions. most people think the turkey is the biggest question but really it s stuffing. to stuff or not to stuff, that, my friend, is the question. did you call it stuffing or dressing? stuffing. dressing would be oil and vinegar on my turkey. who wants that. i called it dressing. i m from the south. we stuffed our dressing. it s very confusing. so to stuff or not to stuff. personally, i don t like it. i like to do dressing in the casserole so you get crunchy bits on top and there are two other reasons you shouldn t stuff your turkey. i know america is going to send me letters and you letter about this. no one sends me letters. go on . it slows down cooking of the turkey and you don t want it in there that long because longer it s in there, the drier it gets. what do you put in? carrots, celery, onne onions. raw egg has to cook to 165 degrees fahrenheit and by the time that s cooked, your turkey is toast. we have an anti-sam nilla thing going. what s the best way to get justiest turkey? that s to brine. you marinate your turkey in salt water and salt equals flavor. overnight for 12 hours in a cooler you can do it in a cooler or in your fridge, you marinate it and then you cook as usual. you can also do a dry cure just rub it in salt and put it in the fridge overnight. same thing. the one thing to keep in mind is it can be salty. your gravy. in my experience brining creates the greatest turkey. one day i have to learn to cook to know what you re talking about. the part of the meal the thing that s often overlooked when we think about thanksgiving is dessert. what would you advise for a good, safe dessert?
