Im craig melvin alongside Sheinelle Jones and Stephanie Ruhle and dylan dreyer. Busy morning. Lets get right to it. The top story as we follow Tropical Storm hermines path as it moves up the east coast. Bringing rain and heavy winds and storm surge. People waking up to a massive clean up as the storm threatens to ruin Labor Day Weekend. We have full coverage, but lets begin with nbcs Kerry Sanders in Virginia Beach. Kerry, good morning. Reporter it is a morning, but not good morning with winds of 45 miles an hour. 30,000 people in this area have no power. Just to the south of here, on Hatteras Island in North Carolina, a possible tornado touchdown. It apparently picked up two mobile homes with residents inside. They have been rushed to the hospital with injuries. Along the Atlantic Coast this morning. It is all about getting ready. In new jersey and as far as cape cod. Were putting extra lines on the boat and stuff like that. Some of the guys are moving their boats up to a cove where it is a bit safer. Reporter hermine roared ashore in the Florida Panhandle as a category one hurricane. Then lost its 80mileanhour winds as she crossed over land into georgia and the two carolinas. Whoa, were going to lose something. Reporter along her path, a trail of destruction. More than a quarter million customers lost power, trees came down, streets flooded. A sign of what could come later today. Now over the atlantic where waters are 7 degrees warmer than usual. Hermine could become a hurricane again. Heavy rains, winds, flash flooding and rip currents a threat up the coast as far as maine. Storms downgraded. People are saying it is safer to go, but it is still a storm and create tidal surge and rough water in the ocean. Reporter for those who endured hermine, a word of warning. Dont ignore mother nature. My husband came back in the house. I thank god he did not get hit. Reporter a tree branch fell on a man in florida and killed him. That is why authorities are suggesting you limit time outside and dont drive. Emergency shelters are opened and believe it or not, we will see some people who decided to get out here and go jogging. Authorities say this is not a good idea. Hopefully they will take care of each other. Thank you, kerry. Be careful. Hermine expected to keep moving north up the eastern seaboard. Beach goers in new jersey are feeling that. Dangerous rip currents are keeping people out of the water. Tami leightner has more. Reporter good morning, craig. This is a different scene from yesterday morning. Yesterday, when tourists and locals were flocking to the beach enjoying miles and miles of sunshine, but there were red flags out yesterday warn of rip tides. They were up the coast from myrtle beach to nantucket. A current will pull a swimmer out making it difficult to escape. Difficult, but not impossible. You can escape one if you stay calm and swim parallel with the shore until you are outside of the rip current. As you can imagine, not a lot of people are out to the beach today because of the dangerous conditions. Craig. Tami for us. Thank you. I was there yesterday with nobody in the water. I want to get a check now. Dylan, tell us where is the storm headed and when will it be over . We have been talking about it for 17 days. That is how long the storm has been hanging around. We will talk about it more as it moves over the water and gets stuck. Here it is across northeastern North Carolina. Winds of 60 miles an hour. We still saw the gusty situations out there for Kerry Sanders. You could see the heaviest rain through Virginia Beach, but banding up across parts of maryland. That will continue to try to move north. I want to point outgoing through the end of the week through labor day, it is not the rain that is an issue, but the storm is offshore and it could strengthen with winds up to 75 Miles Per Hour. That will push the water onshore and create gusty winds. We have the dip in the jet stream. It will get trapped through here. That is why it will not move. You have the water pushed onshore. We have storm surge in addition to the astronomical high tide. At times, perhaps as high as 40 to up to 60 Miles Per Hour. Not just in the midatlantic, but across long island and up into nantucket and south coast of massachusetts. That is how expansive it is. You add 2 to 4 feet in the addition of the astronomical high tide and that could lead to flooding in the atlantic and new england as well. As for rain, we are not looking at a lot of rain except for virginia and North Carolina with an additional 4 to 6 inches of rain. You look at new jersey and Atlantic City with 2 inches. The farther north you go, more or less clouds and spotty showers. It is really the wind that will cause damage and coastal flooding. This is going to be around for a few days. Up until wednesday and it will finally start to pull away. Exacerbating back to school blues. Now to the race for the white house. We are looking at that system right now thats sitting off the coast of virginia at this point, the heavier rain. The center still in parts of North Carolina. Now, what were looking at is this rain starting to head our direction, in fact, if we zoom in the southern most parts of delaware now seeing light to moderate rain, this is only about 20 miles south of cape may. This morning into this afternoon showers over parts of delaware, the jersey shore are expected. The potential for rain, though, increases as we move sunday and now we will even extend into philadelphia as well, maybe parts of the pennsylvania suburbs. Take a look at this possible paths for this system. So through tomorrow still out to the east of us, but then most models putting it curving right near us.
