misdemeanor. deputies are seeking a search warrant for the family's home. more serious federal charges could be filed. more information will be released tomorrow. turning to the unseasonal cold mother had to drop her child and rely a complete stranger to catch her. >> the 911 calls started coming in around 8:45. raging fire was burning at this apartment building in green belt. >> we were the first to arrive and encountered heavy fire conditions on the second and floors of this apartment buildings. >> reporter: firefighters rescued a number of those trapped. some jumped from balconies. a among those awakened is luis in his ground floor apartment. he and his cousin sprang into action to alert people to the danger. >> the people who live in the top floor, they came out from the balcony but can't get down. >> reporter: he and his cousin made their way to a second florida balcony and helped those down. one woman remained trapped oon upper balcony with a baby in her arms. >> i tell her to send to me, drop her. she dropped her to me and i catch her. are. >> reporter: after the life-saving grab he and his cousin helped people get to safety. it was known as spring hill lake apartments there were half a dozen arson fires. >> i don't know what is going on in this complex. it is an everyday occurrence. >> reporter: this fire went to three alarms with hundreds of firefighters responding. a number of families have bn displaced. the fire department is working with the management company and the red cross to find shelter. the cause of the fire is under inveigation. in green belt, derek ward, news 4. >> nine people were taken to the hospit, two in the burn unit in serious condition. 168 people were displaced by that fire. d.c. firefighters sthad had no trouble putting out a fire on chain bridge road today. the one person in the home got out in time. trouble with the low water supply in the area has been a problem lately. officials say it was sufficient today to fight today's fire. backup water trucks were brought in as a precaution. >> they had three hydrants hooked up in like a minute. so they apparently have learn wrd the good hydrants are. >> today's fire was near home of former d.c. school board chair. last year in july it took an hour for firefighters to find hydrants to fight this fire at her home. we are learning more details and the brazen armored car heist. the suspect was shot and under 24-hour guard at a hospital. police have ruled out a second suspect. darcy spencer has more on this story. >> police say the suspect is a 34-year-old man from northwest washington. sources say he rented a car to commit this broad daylight crime. we spoke to a man who saw the whole thing unfold from his beltsville, home. >> they had the window open. >> reporter: kenneth holiday shows where police snipers were set up in his home watching a neighbor's house where an armored car robbery suspect was holed up. >> the only thing i was concerned about is holiday took them into his home to stay safe. >> they were in the next door neighbor's yard and they were, like, shivering because it was raining a little bit. >> reporter: police say the suspect fired an automatic weapon on this armored truck. he exchanged fire with police before getting away in a rental car. he ditched the car at remington's restaurant and barricaded himself in the house. >> it wasn't frightening to me until i saw him come out the side door. >> reporter: police shot the suspect after he came outside. >> i heard the shot. i didn't see the guy go down. >> reporter: police say the brazen robbery attempt at 3:30 in the afternoon was like something straight out of the movies. >> that tells you the mindset and desperation of these suspects. >> police have not yet
