[ male announcer ] there are many vehicles that claim to be just as capable off-road as the jeep grand cherokee. but without triple-sealed doors, a raised air-intake system, or even a watertight drivetrain, just how far off-road are they talking about? ♪ heavy rains being blamed for 69 car pile-up on an arizona highway. it happened last night on interstate 10 in phoenix. at least seven people were taken to area hospitals and dozens of others had minor injuries. police say the drivers were blinded by heavy rain as the storm passed through. katrina nearly entire city while the area is still rebuilding after all these years, one charter school is setting the standard, leaving a path, which many hope other schools will follow. here's a closer look tonight. >> if you live in new orleans, it's definitely a well known intersection. right now, we're on carrollton avenue. and there's no way we should be in a boat on carrollton avenue. >> reporter: this is claiborne and carrollton today, five years later, street cars up and running again. everything is back to normal, which is the case in many parts of the city. on the other hand, there are some areas that look like katrina blew through town a few days ago. >> what are you working on this morning? >> reporter: here's an example of what's working. the james singleton charter schools. chartered in 2000, it first opened its doors five days before katrina. however, because the building didn't sustain any structural damage, it was the first school to open after the storm. extending classes to 1000 students, above normal enrollment from other schools throughout the city that were damaged in the storm. >> let's see who is up next. >> reporter: since katrina, the james singleton charter school has added six grade levels and enrollment has almost doubled. what's more, 90% of the students pass a statewide standardized assessment test. not a small feat for a school in the middle of a neighborhood with a 3% high school dropout rate. it also has a summer enrichment program, and a trade school for the parents, whose average age is 24. fox news from new orleans. well, gwen, you've been talking about this at 6:00, talking about it, leading into our forecast now. we've got heat on the way, right? >> in a big day. we certainly do. we'll really see temperatures rise. it's going to be a heat wave in august heading our way for sure. definitely be prepared to crank up the ac. here's a look outside. pretty nice day today. it was warm, reached into the low 90s pretty much everywhere across our area. plenty of sunshine today, low humidity. it made it very, very comfortable, still comfortable outside right now. we're looking at patchy fog that's going to develop in the overnight hours, into tomorrow morning. could affect parts of your early morning commute, then burned off fairly early. plenty of sunshine ahead in my forecast, i'm happy to say. temperatures rising, but we are really going to see a bit of a heat wave. you'll want to make sure you're ready with the ac. we are talking hurricanes. earl has become a hurricane from this morning, when it was just a tropical storm. things have really progressed with it over the course of the afternoon, into this evening. we'll talk about that as well. let's begin now with a look at where we stood temperature wise with our almanac. 92 degrees at national airport. 91 at dull dulles, same at baltimore. temperatures now into the upper 70s, into the mid range of the 60s currently. 78 degrees at national airport. 70 at gaithersburg. 77 at winchester. a little cooler, 73 degrees to the south at fredericsburg. but we have a ridge of high pressure in control. that is not going anywhere for quite a while. it's actually affecting areas in the central portion of the country, all the way through into the mid-atlantic here. it's keeping our skies very clear. that's what's going to hold as far as sunshine is concerned over the course of the week. what is going on in the tropics? danielle weakening quite a bit and moving its way through to the northeast. it's actually expected by monday to become a pretty powerful, just a system, no tropical characteristics whatsoever, no longer a hurricane, and that's good news as far as the east coast is concerned, because all those strong currents and rip currents in the coastal region will diminish gradually over the next day or two. opposite conditions for earl. earl has now intensified to a category 2 hurricane, moving its way over areas toward the northern leeward islands, continuing to do that into tonight, early tomorrow. it is expected to become a major hurricane, however, and probably that will happen by monday. it's intensified very rapidly over the course of today, so this definitely bears watching. and there's also warnings and watches in effect for areas of the british virgin islands as well. we have an area of low pressure system sitting here, being effected by the tropical wave. wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a tropical depression later tonight or by tomorrow. lots happening. here's a look at the two systems. earl, the cone of uncertainty getting closer to our coastline. this is going to bear watching in the later part of the week. meantime, no shortage of sunshine in the beginning of the week. get ready for a heat wave. temperatures heading into the 90s, a very, very hot week. and for tonight, still remains mild at 73 degrees. patchy fog overnight to tomorrow morning. code orange air quality day for your monday, as we start the week. be prepared for that. here's a look at your day planner. by midday, temperature will be at about 91 degrees. but our daytime high tomorrow is going to be 96 degrees. then it just continues from there, guys. we'll see a few clouds on friday. by friday, we'll get a little closer handle on that earl as it comes up. that could possibly bring us a bit of rain by friday. we'll see. >> thanks, gwen. volcano erupted after 400 years of quiet in indonesia. in the north province, the volcano sent sand and ash high into the sky. lava was contained near the crater. 10,000 people near the site were evacuated. dozens of others were hospitalized with respiratory problems. it last erupted in 1600, so observers don't know much about its pattern. they are now monitoring the volcano very closely, as you can imagine. a coral population on the decline in florida is encouraging ocean lovers to take some action. >> federally backed volunteers are working to bring dying reefs back to life. here are the details from key largo. >> reporter: to attract green moray eels, and fish of all sizes, you've got to first have a healthy living reef. >> tank's tight, air's on, ready for launch. >> reporter: but you first need the building blocks. coral. ken niedermayer and these divers with the coral restoration project swim 35 feet down off the florida keys. there, they stagg horn babies, growing on cinder blocks and pvc pipe, even hanging on rope lines. due to to disease,-- >> i have been living here most of my life and watched it die. to bring the coral reefs back to a healthier condition, there's just a huge trickle down, economic effect everywhere and not to mention biological effects. >> reporter: and the coral have proven themselves to be quite resillient. back in 2003, they transplanted just six coral on nearby molasses reef. today, those six have turned into 1500. here on pickles reef, two years ago it was dead and barron. no coral, no fish. today, with transplanted coral from the nursery, it's full of fish. 3million federal stimulus dollars has paid to grow this program and fund about 50 jobs to maintain 10 nurseries. but much is done by volunteers, like catharine, vacationing from montreal. >> oh, great! first you're diving! so life can be harder. it's hot, nice and sunny, and you're doing something good with it. you're hoping it will do things around, nice feeling. >> reporter: and the results can be seen in amazing colors. off key largo, florida, phil keating, fox news. the smithsonian adding puppet power. >> reporter: the latest addition to the collection at the smithsonian, precursor puppet to kermit the frog and this little guy has some local history. >> in minutes on the news, who killed kanika powell?
