Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to expand street dining and allow public drinking in more parts of the nation's capital, offering a glimpse into how officials hope to reimagine a hospitality industry ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic. The District approved hundreds of temporary outdoor dining permits last year that allowed businesses to take advantage of unused sidewalk space, alleys and parking lanes - generating a lifeline as indoor dining was shut down or drastically curtailed. Legislation unveiled by Bowser, D, last week would allow restaurants to keep operating these "streateries" at no charge this year, and for six-month spans in 2022 and 2023.
