Volusia County is seeking to put a bus stop outside the First Step Shelter two months after a shelter resident died while crossing the four-lane highway to get to catch the bus. The Volusia County Council unanimously agreed to apply for a $56,000 grant to build a sidewalk and ADA-accessible bus stop shelter on the south side of U.S. 92 near the First Step Shelter. Currently, the nearest stop on the south side of U.S. 92 is about a half-mile east of the shelter. Death near shelter happened in January Ashley Baker, 30, was crossing U.S. 92 in the early morning hours of Jan. 25 when she was struck by a pickup. She was taking the bus to a new job at Trader Joe's Warehouse in Daytona Beach.
