Daytona Beach, FL – Votran is working on major updates to its transit development plan, or TDP, and has two public workshops scheduled for next week. The TDP is a 10-year strategic planning document assessed and updated every five years to provide a guide for the development of the transit system over the next decade. Bobbie King, Volusia Community Service Operations Manager for Votran says that public participation is an important part of developing the TDP. The workshops are scheduled for Monday, May 17, at the Daytona Beach Regional Library from 5:30 to 7 p..m. and Thursday, May 20, at the Volusia County Council Chambers in DeLand, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Individuals who want to attend Monday’s meeting virtually should register at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/7375394671399596043, and individuals who want to attend Thursday’s meeting virtually should register at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/4534977
Daily coronavirus cases have declined to an average of 99 cases per day in Volusia County in the past two weeks. Deaths are also down, but hospitalizations are up locally and across Florida as COVID-19 variants continue to spread.
The pair of orders DeSantis imposed Monday suspended and invalidated any local order in Florida which restricts the rights or liberties of individuals or their businesses.
The last remaining mask mandates in DeLand, Orange City and New Smyrna Beach were nullified by the orders, but Volusia County never imposed a countywide mask mandate or restrictions on businesses.
However, the federal mask mandate on public transportation still applies at the Daytona Beach International Airport and on Votran buses.

Volusia County is seeking to put a bus stop outside the First Step Shelter two months after a shelter resident died while crossing the four-lane highway to get to catch the bus.
The Volusia County Council unanimously agreed to apply for a $56,000 grant to build a sidewalk and ADA-accessible bus stop shelter on the south side of U.S. 92 near the First Step Shelter. Currently, the nearest stop on the south side of U.S. 92 is about a half-mile east of the shelter.
Death near shelter happened in January
Ashley Baker, 30, was crossing U.S. 92 in the early morning hours of Jan. 25 when she was struck by a pickup. She was taking the bus to a new job at Trader Joe s Warehouse in Daytona Beach.
