NORTH CANTON – The handwritten words scrawled in chalk on the walkways of Walsh University’s campus declared, “Love is love” and “Love is stronger than hate.” They also quoted Psalm 139, “fearfully and wonderfully made” and called for action, “Be an ally” and “Support your students.” Placed in the busiest areas of campus and at the doors of the administration building, the words sent a dual message: To signal support for Walsh LGBTQIA+ students. And to warn Walsh leaders that they would not be silenced again. Walsh, a private Catholic university founded in 1960 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, finds itself under examination for the way it treats its students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual.
