Eccentric training is the latest addition to many fitness routines and lexicons. Contrary to its name, eccentric fitness focuses on building strength, rather than incorporating something quirky into your workout. The meaning of ‘eccentric’ in fitness refers to the muscles being lengthened and held in tension during a negative phase of movement – such as the downward motion of squatting. The opposite of eccentric is 'concentric', which is all about the upwards motion – which you would find when you rise in a chin-up or sit-up. Then lastly, you have isometric exercises, where you are holding your body still – no upward or downward motion – which you'll commonly see in planks or wall sits.
