Dr. George Dugan Wolf, age 97, Emeritus Pennsylvania State University Dean and Professor of American Studies and American Civilization, lifelong educator, Pennsylvania historian, Pennsylvania political analyst, author, Corporal in the United States Army, (E Company, 387th Infantry, 97th Division), World War II Army veteran, and seniors tennis player passed on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Bethany Village in Lower Allen Township with his beloved daughters Susan and Linnie by his side.
He was the widower of the former Margaret “Peg” Inez McNeil, who died in 2004. They were married 56 years. Born June 4 in Corry, Pennsylvania, he is the son of the late Norah Elizabeth Dugan and Sol Woodbridge Wolf, formerly of Williamsport, PA. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Ayelien Richards of Dublin, PA; Salle Peters of West Chester, PA; and Richard Wolfe of Cherry Hill, NJ. ....

Professors look to amend regent bylaws, protect faculty freedoms


Two professors involved with the American Association of University Professors have been fighting to pass amendments to the Board of Regents bylaws in hopes of defending instructors’ academic freedom.
The proposed amendments to the regents bylaws would help regulate the process by which the university puts faculty on administrative leave, including what actions or situations warrant a suspension. In addition, university administration would be required to attempt to reach a mutual settlement with professional staff members up for immediate suspension, according to the proposed amendments.
Regina Werum, a professor of sociology and president of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln  AAUP chapter, and Matt Cohen, professor of English and vice president of the UNL AAUP chapter, said the faculty effort at UNL and surrounding universities has resulted in the proposal of these amendments that would help protect due process and the academic freedom of instructors.  ....

China’s Confucius Institutes, which teach Chinese language and culture in many countries, are again in the spotlight, following a February 8 article in the U.S. conservative website The National Pulse entitled “Biden Quietly Revokes Trump’s Ban On Chinese Communist Propaganda In Schools.”  The misleading headline fueled outrage among conservative news outlets and right-wing pundits, many of whom believe China’s Confucius Institutes censure information and promote propaganda and who often accuse Biden of being soft on China.   ....
