Bagenstos appointed as White House budget office lawyer

Washington University of Michigan law professor Sam Bagenstos is joining the new Biden administration as general counsel of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
UM Law School Dean Mark D. West sent an email notifying faculty and staff of Bagenstos appointment on Wednesday, hours after the President Joe Biden s inauguration.
In his new role, Bagenstos will give legal advice to the director and staff across the largest executive department in the Office of the President whose mission is aiding the administration with policy, budget, management and regulatory priorities.
The position, which does not require Senate confirmation, includes reviewing proposed agency regulations and agency comments on legislation, helping with the drafting of the president s bill signing statements and overseeing the proposed annual budget for the executive branch. ....

Facial recognition vendor Rank One Computing said on Wednesday it would “add legal means” and research other ways to thwart misuse after its software was involved in the first known wrongful arrest based on the technology in the United States.
Robert Williams, who is Black, spent over a day in Detroit police custody in January after Rank One’s face recognition software connected his driver’s license photo to a surveillance video of someone shoplifting, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) said. ....

Groups call on state to prioritize vaccination of people in Michigan prisons

A coalition of eight groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, are urging the governor s office and the state health department director to prioritize the vaccination of people who are incarcerated.
COVID-19 has spread in every Michigan prison facility, infecting over half of the population since March and killing 123 people.
As of Wednesday, Michigan s Department of Corrections (MDOC) reported 4,055 people currently have the virus. The state has one of the highest infection rates in the country, according to The Marshall Project. ....
