A Wonder Valley man who pleaded guilty in a Joshua Tree courtroom April 27 to killing a Twentynine Palms man and stealing his car two years ago has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Bryon Calvert was reported missing by his family on January 30, 2019, when he didn’t arrive at a friend’s house as promised. Later that evening, Bobby Collins was spotted by a family member driving Calvert’s car on Interstate 10 in Indio at a high rate of speed. Collins was subsequently arrested by the California Highway Patrol. Investigators learned that Collins had recently started a relationship with Calvert. Sheriff’s deputies got a search warrant for Collins’ home in the 4700 block of Gillespie Road in Wonder Valley and found Calvert’s body. Collins was arrested on suspicion of murdering Calvert. Following a mental health evaluation last month, which declared Collins competent, Bobby Collins pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, carjacking, mayhem, and assault with a deadly wea ....

Hundreds of miles north and east, along the Nevada border, is the Surprise Valley, a remote, high-desert region undergirded by cone-shaped hollows of sediment that hold deposits of water. Both of these water systems, along with every other groundwater basin in California a whopping 515 entities must create individually tailored plans to manage their water use more sustainably. In scale and ambition, California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) has few parallels. Wonder Valley Delegate Steve Reyes will present on this issue and MAC members will discuss Resolution No. MB-MAC021 that offers support for Supervisor Dawn Rowe and the San Bernardino County Sheriff Department. The resolution requests more funding and additional code enforcement personnel to tackle the issue. A Wonder Valley cabin is a total loss following a fire Thursday night. Fire fighters from Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree, and the Combat Center were called to the area of Mojave Road and Indian Trail about 10 p.m. for an unknown fire. Crews arrived to find a cabin fully involved with flames, which burned to the ground. There was no additional threat to other structures or vegetation. Firefighters had the blaze under control within minutes of their arrival. There were no injuries; the cause remains under investigation. Share this: ....
