Taiwan can help; so should India - Taipei Times

Taiwan can help; so should India
By Sana Hashmi
The 74th World Health Assembly (WHA) is to take place from May 24 to June 1. This meeting is crucial, as several countries are witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases. DHARAMSHALA, May 12: China has reportedly been setting up villages in Bhutan as part of a major construction drive by the Chinese President Xi Jinping since 2017, revealed an investigative report published by
Foreign Policy on Friday. The report argued that the Beijing administration has been occupying territories historically understood as Bhutanese territory since 2015.
China announced the construction of a new village called Gyalaphug (Ch: Jieluobu) established in the south of the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR). The findings on Gyalaphug revealed that it is one of the three new villages, two already occupied, out of which one is currently under construction. The author of the report, Robert Barnett claimed ....

In October 2015, China announced that a new village, called Gyalaphug in Tibetan or Jieluobu in Chinese, had been established in the south of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). In April 2020, the Communist Party secretary of the TAR, Wu Yingjie, travelled across two passes, both more than 14,000 feet high, on his way to visit the new village. There he told the residents all of them Tibetans to “put down roots like Kalsang flowers in the borderland of snows” and to “raise the bright five-star red flag high”. ....

The world turns to China for vaccines after India, US stumble

The world turns to China for vaccines after India, US stumble
By Iain Marlow, Sudhi Ranjan Sen
and James Paton / Bloomberg
The world is fast becoming ever more reliant on China for vaccines, with India’s raging virus outbreak stifling its ability to deliver on supply deals, even as the US tries to position itself as a champion of wider access.
Over the past few weeks, leaders of some of the world’s most populous nations have sought more shots from China, despite concerns about their effectiveness. Demand is expected to rise even further if the WHO, as expected, authorizes vaccines from China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd and Sinopharm Group Co Ltd, allowing developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to access them through COVAX, the global vaccination effort. ....
