An open letter to Executive Hornberger

To Executive Hornberger,
On March 4, your office announced that you will convene a summit of local officials and experts to address the opioid crisis that has ravaged Cecil County. Being that the opioid crisis has touched the lives of almost all citizens of Cecil in some way, it is very commendable that you plan to focus on addressing the opioid crisis immediately. The agenda looks to be very aggressive with comments from local officials, presentations from experts, and even breakout rooms to discuss the issue in detail among the attendees. However, there is a big issue with this summit in that it is missing a key stakeholder in how the opioid crisis is handled..the citizens of Cecil County. ....

Individuals who filed claims over opioid addiction or overdose deaths against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP are projected to receive as much as $48,000 under the company’s bankruptcy plan.
Estimated payouts under Purdue’s chapter 11 proposal, filed Monday, depend on the severity of an individual’s injury or addiction, with the least severe cases getting an estimated $3,500. Administrators would determine individuals’ eligibility for compensation and rate the severity of their opioid injuries through a point system, according to court papers filed Monday. Specific eligibility and qualification requirements will be made public later. ....

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING: COVID also raising death toll from opioids

Since 1999, when the unconstrained prescription of painkillers was beginning to emerge as a public-health crisis, more than 535,000 lives have been lost to opioid overdoses. If that grim number seems familiar, it’s just a bit higher than COVID-19’s toll of 527,000 deaths so far.
COVID-19 and the opioid crisis are linked in other ways too. The pandemic has driven an alarming increase in overdose fatalities over the past year, as people struggling to recover from opioid dependence have been undone by isolation, job loss and the added difficulty of getting support and treatment with social distancing rules in effect. All this at a time when lethal illicit fentanyl is increasingly turning up in street narcotics, including counterfeit hydrocodone and oxycodone pills. The 12 months ending last July saw 61,000 deaths, a surge from the previous year — even though the period includes only the first five months of the pandemic. ....

US attorneys general suing Purdue Pharma, maker of the prescription painkiller OxyContin that became addictive for hundreds of thousands of people, are demanding more money after the company s owners boosted more from their personal fortune and offered nearly $4.3 billion to settle thousands of opioid lawsuits.
The Sacklers became billionaires by causing a national tragedy. Now they re trying to get away with it, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said in a statement Tuesday. We re going to keep fighting for the accountability that families all across this country deserve.   ....

Murthy, Levine Nominations Set for Senate Floor Vote

email article
WASHINGTON Members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee voted Wednesday to send President Biden s nominations of Vivek Murthy, MD, for surgeon general and Rachel Levine, MD, for assistant secretary of health to the Senate floor for an approval vote.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most mismanaged crises in American history largely because we did not have the right people in place to properly handle this emergency, HELP committee member Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said in a statement after the votes. Dr. Murthy and Dr. Levine each have exceptional expertise to strengthen our federal response and collaborate with state and local health officials to help implement strategies to help us recover from this pandemic. I will vote to confirm each nominee so we can quickly get to work on better addressing this crisis. ....
