Belarus diverts Ryanair flight to arrest journalist, says opposition


A Ryanair plane flying from Greece to Lithuania has been diverted to Belarus, with the country s opposition figures saying it was done so a dissident journalist on board could be arrested.

The Nexta media network said its ex-editor Roman Protasevich was detained.
Belarus state media said the plane was diverted to Minsk because of a bomb scare but no explosives were found.
European nations have reacted with outrage, accusing Belarus of state terrorism and demanding punishment.
Political figures across Europe have already called for the EU and Nato to intervene. ....

World leaders welcome Israel-Gaza cease-fire
The truce was hailed by world leaders, after 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas. US President Joe Biden said it was a genuine opportunity to make progress.

Leaders around the world reacted to the announcement of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas on Thursday. The truce began early on Friday morning at 2 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Thursday).
President Joe Biden hailed the cease-fire as a chance for further progress during a White House address. He also thanked Egyptian leaders who mediated the truce. ....

World leaders welcome ceasefire between Israel, Palestine in Gaza


Leaders from around the world on Thursday welcomed the news of a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine which ended the more than 10-day conflict that caused destruction on both sides as thousands of rockets were fired between them.
Israeli security cabinet on Thursday unanimously adopted Egypt s initiative for a bilateral unconditional ceasefire, which took effect at 23:00 GMT on Thursday. At least 217 Palestinians and 12 Israelis have died in the conflict.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Palestine and called on all parties to observe it. I welcome the ceasefire between Gaza and Israel after 11 days of deadly hostilities, Guterres said on Thursday. I call on all sides to observe the ceasefire. ....

U.S., UK, Egyptian and UN leaders on Thursday welcomed a ceasefire announced by Israel and Hamas after 11 days of bombing and rocket strikes.
UK: All sides must work to make the ceasefire durable and end the unacceptable cycle of violence and loss of civilian life.
UN: I stress that Israeli and Palestinian leaders have a responsibility beyond the restoration of calm to start a serious dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict.
