Beginning on the weekend of May 22nd, the Allentown Catholic Diocese will allow churches to return to full capacity. The diocese says worshipers will still have to wear masks, as will priests and others giving out Communion. The sign of peace will continue to remained shelved. The obligation to attend Mass is not being lifted yet and Bishop Alfred Schlert says he doesn t know when that might change.
We ve learned more than 50 Allentown Catholic Diocese priests will be getting new assignments later this year. Official word will be announced at Masses in most diocese churches this weekend.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health Thursday announced 2476 new coronavirus cases in the state, leaving the state s overall total at 1,166,692. 57 new COVID-related deaths, pushing the state s total to 26,447. Right now, 2131 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, 467 of whom are in the intensive care unit. ....

Caitlin Sanders, a Syracuse University senior, spent her past four years at SU running CuseHacks events and cheering as Otto the Orange.

Who Is Syracuse is an annual series by The Daily Orange that highlights those who have made notable contributions to the community.
Caitlin Sanders knew her time was up. It was Feb. 28, and the Syracuse University senior was almost finished running her last CuseHacks event, an annual “hackathon” where participants compete to create technology projects for 24 hours.
After an impromptu speech over Zoom thanking the people that helped her, a sense of uncertainty fell over her. All those late hours planning and organizing were now in the past. ....

A 60-year-old man was pronounced dead about 40 minutes after being struck by a vehicle at 5:54 p.m. Wednesday on North Seventh Street near Sumner Avenue in Whitehall Township just beyond the Allentown border, authorities say.
Edwin Rodriguez, of Whitehall Township, died at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office said. An autopsy on Friday will help the coroner’s office determine the cause and manner of the man’s death. ....

The Pennsylvania Department of Health Wednesday added 2597 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 1,164,216. There were 56 new COVID-related deaths also added Wednesday, leaving the commonwealth s overall total at 26,390. There are currently 2172 people hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number 480 are in the intensive care unit.
Two local colleges announce different COVID-19 vaccination policies. DeSales University will not require students or staff to get a COVID-19 vaccine for the fall semester. The university says it strongly urges anyone who is eligible to get a vaccine, but it won t be mandatory. In a statement, university president Father James Greenfield says, ....
