A trial over Cal State Long Beach’s treatment of indigenous land is inching closer to the courtroom, and on Monday, tribal leaders outlined the protections they’re seeking in the hopes of blocking the potential of ever developing a plot of revered ground known as Puvungna.

All of CSULB was built on land tribes considered to be part of Puvungna, which was a village and place of creation and burial site for the indigenous people who lived there. Now, indigenous nations say they use the remaining 22 acres of undeveloped land along Bellflower Boulevard for ceremonies and spiritual gatherings.

California may make it easier for parents to request that their children be held back a grade level next school year or have letter grades earned this school year changed to a “pass” or “don’t pass” score, which some colleges will be required to accept if Assembly Bill 104 becomes law.
The bill was introduced today by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, as a way to ensure that students aren’t punished for falling behind academically during the pandemic.
“The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated educational inequities in California’s school system at an unprecedented scale,” said Gonzalez in her author’s statement. “Mounting evidence indicates that our most vulnerable students lack the necessary academic, social emotional, and technological supports needed to be successful in distance learning, leaving them to fall behind and underperform.”

Ironically, they plan on doing this by involving the subjects considered to be the third rail of first dates: politics/social issues.
The group, which calls itself CivilityLB, describes the process, set to begin at 6 p.m., thusly:
“Similar to the concept of speed dating/speed friending, participants will have seven minutes to intimately discuss a pressing social issue with a stranger. Once that time is up, a rotation will occur and the participant will be paired with a new stranger to discuss another social issue. CivilityLB aims to show participants that regardless of how tough the conversation is, they can engage in civil discussions with strangers, even if they disagree with their viewpoints.”
