How frontline teams engage with patient-centred quality improvement

Research summary
18 January, 2021
Organisations that provide good patient experience also perform well against other clinical and organisational measures. A study has found that frontline teams engage most with patient experience feedback when a range of professions and levels of seniority are involved
Abstract
Improving patient experience is a key part of quality improvement in the NHS; a lot of patient feedback is collected but not necessarily acted on. A study explored how frontline hospital ward teams engage with this data, finding that progress was generally greater when there was support from a central patient experience function and when the ward team comprised a range of professionals of different levels of seniority. This provides a wider range of skills, networks, ideas, resources and authority. ....

The post-truth pandemic

Jan 6, 2021
Oxford, England – On July 31, 2020, my college at the University of Oxford hosted a Zoom seminar featuring talks by several internationally renowned scientists. The session was intended primarily for internal faculty, but, owing to the pandemic-inspired practice of disseminating scientific findings as widely as possible, other researchers and interested members of the public had also been invited. When my turn came to speak, I opened my PowerPoint and was immediately assailed with abusive messages in the chat window. To quote one: “F PIECE OF S F YOU, YOU F SHEEP NEW WORLD ORDER PIECE OF S .”
The title of my presentation was, “Explaining international differences in masking policies in the COVID-19 pandemic,” but I could have just as well been speaking about lockdowns, testing and tracing, shielding or dozens of other related topics. In each case, policymakers had assured us from the outset of the pandemic that they were “following th ....

Alistair Wardrope: Putting health and climate justice at the heart of COP 26

Alistair Wardrope: Putting health and climate justice at the heart of COP 26
December 11, 2020
Climate breakdown, “the greatest threat to global health of the 21st century” is driven by the same political and economic systems that are exacerbating health inequities, so starkly amplified by covid-19. The UK Government’s recent announcements appear to acknowledge the imperative to tackle the “twin problems of social inequalities and climate change.” However promises of a “green industrial revolution”, or last week’s “ambitious” emissions reductions pledge, fail to acknowledge the true scale of the challenge, or of the UK’s historical responsibility. As the UK prepares to host the 26th Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) the first global reassessment of emissions reductions commitments since the signing of the Paris Agreement in 2015 it should show true ambition in adopting policies that prioritise the health an ....
