Why a battle is shaping up in Louisiana over the latest push for mandatory kindergarten

Feb. 28 The bid to make kindergarten mandatory in Louisiana, which has been tried before and failed, is about to spark controversy again.
Backers say the requirement would dovetail with state efforts to expand early childhood education, and that it could help get the state off the bottom of many rankings for public school achievement.
“It just makes basic sense,” said Senate Education Committee Chairman Cleo Fields, who has filed a bill to require kindergarten attendance for debate during the 2021 regular legislative session. ....

Louisiana Family Forum honors Gonzales couple for 80 years of marriage

Louisiana Family Forum announced that Patsy and Gail Richardson of Gonzales have won the title of 2021 Louisiana’s Longest Married Couple for the Louisiana Family Forum Marriage Hall of Fame.
The Richardsons celebrated their 80th anniversary Sept. 1, 2020. Gail is 101 and Patsy is 99 years old.
According to LFF’s report on the couple, Patsy recalls that on their first date, Gail took her fishing. Their lines got tangled and they’ve been together ever since.
Gail is a World War II veteran, was in the medical corps, traveled overseas in the hospital unit, and later moved into the infantry. Their oldest child was just 6 months old when he left for the service. ....
