MANILA-The government must convene its agencies to improve the social protection of Filipino workers and strengthen their safety nets including the retirees. This was the observation of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano at Monday's organizational meeting of the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resource Development, adding that the state financial aid program can serve as protection of workers. Cayetano said this was done during the administration of former President Joseph Estrada when officials from the Social Security System, Government Service Insurance System, Department of Finance, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Labor and Employment, and other government agencies and non-governmental organizations implementing social protection programs came together to coordinate their policies. Ivan Eric Salvador, DSWD-9 information officer, said 27 of the 29 victims of the incident have received their respective educational assistance from the agency. Salvador said the beneficiaries comprised of elementary, high school, senior high and college students. They received an amount ranging from PHP1,000 to PHP4,000. Senate Bill No. 60, authored by Senator Francis Escudero, seeks to double the amount being received by some 1.8 million government employees under the Personnel Economic Relief Allowance (PERA). Raising the PERA amount from PHP2,000 to PHP4,000 will help state workers cope with the higher prices brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and oil price hikes. Jacqueline Ann de Guia, CHR Executive Director, said the measure also proposes to provide automatic yearly adjustment equivalent to any increase in the annual inflation rate. MANILA-The National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) said the Wage Board in Metro Manila will be discussing next week the possible wage adjustment on the salary of domestic workers in the region. According to NWPC Executive Director Maria Criselda Sy, the matter will be tackled during the public hearing by the Board. "The issue that has yet to be discussed at the public hearing is for domestic workers on NCR, which is set next week," he said at the Laging Handa briefing on Thursday. At the same time, Sy assured the public that the other Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPBs) will also come up with their decisions regarding the wage adjustments in their regions soon. "So far, the update I can give you, is that most wage boards are already in the wage deliberation stage. In fact, only a few of them are in the last stages of the public hearing.
