Jets GM Joe Douglas takes legacy-defining risk by dealing Sam Darnold

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- After months of intense speculation and polarizing debate among fans and pundits, the New York Jets have arrived at The Decision -- Part I, anyway. General manager Joe Douglas has decided to move on from quarterback Sam Darnold, who was traded Monday to the Carolina Panthers only three seasons into his pro career.
This was a difficult, multilayered decision, one that sparked debate within the organization. In the end, it feels like a mistake, a blown opportunity to cash in a winning lottery ticket.
The trade means the Jets are prepared to take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, probably BYU's Zach Wilson, the Zac Efron look-alike with ridiculous arm talent who raised his stock with a fantastic season against one of the softest college schedules in the country.

Jets' QB drama: Sam Darnold would 'embrace' competition from rookie

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A look at what's happening around the New York Jets:
1. Darnold vs. Wilson? Former Jets quarterback Josh McCown couldn't help but laugh at how the narrative surrounding Sam Darnold has changed. Noting the fickle nature of the NFL, McCown told ESPN this week, "Three years ago, it was 'Suck for Sam.' Now it's, '
Sucked for Sam.'"
The past three seasons have stunk for everybody connected with the Jets, and that's one of the reasons Darnold could be replaced by a rookie, presumably BYU's Zach Wilson. McCown, who became a mentor to Darnold in 2018 and has remained close with him, believes the Jets would be wise to keep him. He feels Darnold would thrive in a stable, quarterback-friendly environment, something he hasn't had.

Plenty of potential suitors if (when?) Jets opt to trade Sam Darnold

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A look at what's happening around the New York Jets:
1. Days numbered?Sam Darnold's chances of returning in 2021 seemed to improve with the hiring of coach Robert Saleh, who spoke of the quarterback in glowing terms (privately to friends as well). Now, 46 days before the 2021 NFL draft, those chances appear to be fading.
General manager Joe Douglas all but posted a "For Sale" sign when he recently admitted he is open to fielding trade inquiries. Since then, nothing has changed with regard to Darnold. The Jets are listening. This month, Douglas will be a fixture on the QB/pro day circuit. It kicked off Friday at North Dakota State, where he scouted Trey Lance, a likely top-10 pick.

Domino effect with Sam Darnold could affect Patriots' QB plans

However the Jets proceed, it should have some level of impact on the Patriots.
For example, might Darnold's availability potentially pique the San Francisco 49ers' interest, thus making Jimmy Garoppolo an option for a return to New England? Or, in turn, the Jets sticking with Darnold could create action for the No. 2 pick from other QB-needy teams, altering the draft board and who is ultimately available to the Patriots (No. 15).
These are the scenarios coach Bill Belichick and his staff have likely already begun dissecting.
One longtime NFL executive opined to ESPN's Jets reporter Rich Cimini that he could envision a low first-round or high second-round pick being shipped for Darnold, who enters the final year of his rookie contract, with a decision on his huge fully-guaranteed fifth-year option (2022) due by May 3.

Would New York Jets regret a Sam Darnold trade? Some experts say yes

The Jets have received multiple inquiries from teams interested in trading for Darnold, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday. Darnold and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz are generating the most buzz (next to the Houston Texans' Deshaun Watson, of course), an indication Darnold still is held in high regard around the league despite a career-worst season in 2020.
Talent evaluators, trusting their eyes over spreadsheets in this particular case, see what he can be, not what he is. That he was the third overall pick by the Jets in 2018, ahead of stars such as the Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen and Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson, undoubtedly is fresh in their memories.

Rating the Denver Broncos' quarterback possibilities for 2021

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- A long, long time ago in a football galaxy not so far away, coach Mike Shanahan had some things to say about free agency and the Denver Broncos.
"Everybody says we're in on everybody. Same thing every year. 'Oh and the Broncos are in discussions' type thing. Sometimes we are, but most of the time we weren't, but if you're an agent and your guy is in the market, just say the Broncos are interested."
It was 2006 and, truth be told, Shanahan was quite often interested, but what goes around has certainly come around as the Broncos are one of the league's designated "quarterback needy" franchises that didn't play in this postseason. The franchise has seemingly launched 1,000 photoshops of a rotating group of veteran quarterbacks -- believed to be on the move this offseason -- to see how they would look in orange and blue.

Robert Saleh faces big decisions with New York Jets, including his own role

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Robert Saleh is one focused individual. During the final stages of negotiations with the New York Jets, he locked himself in his home office and told his wife to hold all calls. That included family. He was so isolated from potential distractions that his own father had to get the news of his hiring on TV.
Saleh will need that kind of steadfastness in his new gig as Jets head coach. It's one of the toughest coaching jobs in sports -- so tough that the past five men who held the position went out with a losing record.

Robert Saleh's arrival bodes well for New York Jets' Sam Darnold

With the No. 2 pick in April's draft, the Jets are faced with the decision of what to do with their franchise QB who regressed in Year 3.

How Jets will resolve Sam Darnold dilemma? Todd McShay has a hunch

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A look at what's happening around the New York Jets:
1. Sam's (Fan) Club: Listening to general manager Joe Douglas, it doesn't sound like he will be swayed by how Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields plays Monday night in the College Football Playoff championship. Douglas believes the bulk of the scouting is done; he sees this as the "final-piece-to-the-puzzle" stage. That, of course, won't stop fans and media from dissecting every pass and speculating whether Fields is worthy of the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
As the debate rages, one voice worth a listen is that of ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay, who has known Douglas for 25 years. Speaking on the "First Draft" podcast, McShay sounds pretty convinced Douglas won't draft a quarterback and will run it back with Sam Darnold in 2021.
